- Shelagh Fogarty has a fiery debate with caller John, who phones in to discuss his view on the British teen jailed in Dubai for having sex with a 17-year-old girl from London, after the pair struck up a holiday romance.
Caller John tells Shelagh he is from a traveller background, in which 'pedophiles, rapists and murderers' don't exist because of the community's rules against pre-marital sex.
He goes on to say that it's 'different' when a man has sex vs a woman.
Shelagh Fogarty is not having any of it.
It comes after 18-year-old Marcus Fakana has been sent to prison for a year after the relationship with the fellow teenager, who is now also 18.
The Tottenham-born teenager was allegedly reported to Dubai’s authorities by the girl’s mother after their fling was discovered.
He is expected to appeal his sentence.
Mr Fakana feels abandoned by the British government, according to the campaign group Detained in Dubai. The family appealed for help from Foreign Secretary David Lammy - who is also their MP - after Mr Fakana was arrested.

This argument doesn't hold up, unless in the Traveller community's eyes it's OK for Traveller boys/men to sleep with women from what this man calls 'English culture', who he, by extension, thinks of as prostitutes, because they're not married. Because (according to him) it can't and won't be women from the Traveller community. The notion that a woman's virginity translates to self-respect and respect to the community and religion, and once that's gone, it's gone, is so outdated - it's (back to) men having power over women, justifying (in their eyes) the 'ownership' of women, inequality, and self-gratification based on the belief that the Bible tells them so. @@Felled-angel If you live in the UK then you get all the benefits that everybody else gets from their taxes, even if you use private health and private schools.
Due to the Tories' schenanigans, private schools are subsidised by the taxpayer, at least until Labour finally apply VAT.
The private health sector is shored up by NHS emergency and high dependency services. If your expensive, queue-jumping operation goes wrong, it is the NHS who will foot the bill for saving your life. And, because the Tories were stealth-privatising the NHS, much of the private work done in the UK is done with NHS bought equipment.
If you are an employer in the UK then you benefit much more from those 'services you don't use' than most other tax payers. You have employees who can read and write and do maths because of our public school system and you don't have to support or replace them if they get ill because of our health and social services. Also, if you underpay your employees, like many stingy businesses, the Universal Credit that you 'don't use' will subsidise your greed - in fact bad employers account for the biggest amount of benefit scrounging in the UK.
If you use the roads for haulage or transport, then again you may be more reliant than many others on this 'service that you don't use'. And then there's the police and the fire service. Who do you rely on to protect your property? Batman?
So, what is it? Do you live outside of the UK? Because, if you don't, you owe tax just as much as everybody else, and it has nothing to do with whether you use specific services or not; tax is the price we all pay for being members of a civilised society. It's as simple as that.

The only people having kids above the replacement rate are conservative religious groups. The stricter the religious belief the higher the fertility and the higher the retention rate of the followers.
Liberal views are geographically and historically an anomaly, you and I are likely to have been brought up in that anomaly, but that doesn't change that fact.
Birth rates are below replacement nearly worldwide now. Even in places where it isn't yet, they are fast approaching it. To attribute it to liberal, or conservative, ideals requires an incredibly wide definition of those ideals. It is overwhelmingly an economic reaction to our modern economy. Children no longer convey an advantage, either social or economic. Given their high economic costs individuals are simply acting in their own best interests. Short of changing our current economic system, or simply waiting for a supply and demand balance, this will almost certainly continue.

The global fertility rate is approaching sub replacement, which of course masks different extremes, but with one or two exceptions falling everywhere (though in some countries it's a long way from reaching 2.1).
That's fairly universally known, what's more interesting is the differences within countries than between them, where religion does play a major factor in different fertility rates.
Israel has seen its ultra orthodox population go from 2% to 20% in a couple of generations. The Amish population has increased almost 20 times since the second world war. Part of the undoing of Atatürk's vision for a secular Turkey was a demographic shift away from secular liberal Turks within the population.
The future belongs to those who turn up and I suspect the caller will have many more children than the secular liberals like us would have. There's going to be a natural ceiling towards these shifts but probably not one before doing lasting changes to the culture.
Yeah, there's lots of subvariation in different cultures and countries. Religion is often one of those factors. Besides Israel, as you correctly cite. (Although I haven't looked into how much is immigration vs actual births. Note, not denying your statement, just personally uncertain of how much is from actual local births.) There are also examples like India. Where we see a rise in the absolute Muslim population, along with the accompanying proportional rise vs the Hindu population.
My main concern was to not over generalize along politically ideological lines. Those will certainly play a part. Clearly in the US, at least, conservatives tend to have proportionally more children. (Although even they show a marked drop from historical trends.) Just that it's hard to compare liberal/conservative in such different cultural contexts. At least as far as I'm concerned anyway.
It's quite a difficult thing to address. I've looked at the attempts by different areas to stall or reverse these trends and there doesn't seem to be much that has a large permanent effect. It definitely creates economic and social issues/concerns. Fortunately we are nowhere near the situation of someplace like Japan with its highly aging population. Or South Korea with its *incredibly* rapid drop. Such cases are much more difficult to adapt to.

There's only a few months and probably no maturity difference between them, but on paper in the UAE he's an adult and she is a child below the age of consent.

I had the misfortune to live near a traveller community in my youth, our house was burgled every few years. Moved to a nicer area and haven't been robbed since!
Not saying it wasn't the travellers that burgled your home, but the nicer area you now live is why you haven't been robbed. If you went to an equal area as you once lived, and there was no travellers there, you probably still get your home broken into. Nothing to do with travellers. You get thieves in most places, all depends on the road or area. I previously lived in a road and got mower robbed, because there where druggies and thieves there. Now live in same area just different road, nothing robbed. It has nothing to do with travellers, unless travellers live by your road.

Personally, I don’t believe people should even be allowed to get married until they’ve lived together for a while, to see if they are right for each other, which includes finding out whether they are sexually compatible. Marriage is a statement of long-term commitment, and should be respected as such.

The number of toxic relationships in this world that come out of couples from religious communities forcing them to marry before they can get to know each other. It's ridiculous. To have a decent chance of a lasting, caring relationship you should know EVERYTHING about your compatibility with your partner. My grandparents grew up in the early 20th century. They married young, hated each others guts as long as I knew them but preferred to live in misery because they'd got married and that was "sacrosanct". We're supposed to be leaving the stone age behind us ffs.
