#homefree #voiceplay As others have said already said, the two groups were together in the 4th season of "Sing Off!", and they're friends since. This thing was meant to be used if they were to be together in a direct "elimination game" in the show, which never happened, so they decided to make this video afterwards. BUT they toured together in the Sing Off Tour for, I think, roughly two years, and there's at least one video of the two groups performing it live. 😅 This particular video, for me, showcases two HUGE qualities of these two groups. Both of them have a good sense of humour, AND both of them take what they DO very seriously, but none of them takes THEMSELVES very seriously. 🙂 I love both. See you next time!
@@highlyreactivereactionsOriginally Voice Play was all guys in the group but for some reason the judges wanted them to add a woman in the group. I thought they did much better without a woman in the group. That in itself spoiled it for them to go any further than they did. The judges had it all planned out for who they wanted the winner to be from the beginning. The group who was most well known always win. Don't get me wrong, I love Home Free.
Honey was in the group when they were in the Sing-Off. The Sing-Off wanted the 2 groups to do this, but VoicePlay didn't make the final cut so they did it a bit later after the show was over. Emoni Wilkins took her place when VoicePlay were in two of the Sing-Off tours. She can be seen and heard on VoicePlay's Wicked. During the Covid pandemic, VP did The Sing Off which is a Zoom of the members of VoicePlay from 1997 to about 3.5 yrs ago, and guest vocalists that have sung with them over that time frame. Make sure you turn on the captions so you'll know all the folks and their claim to fame. Tim is in there with Geoff which is fun. They both have similarly colored hair with the white streak.
It's always fun to see VP and HF together -- two highly talented vocal groups having fun! Happily, they never had to do this as a sing-off elimination. Enjoyed your reactions, as always!
Great reaction! I recommend you check out the Sing cover by voice play. They did this during the pandemic as a fundraiser, and it has alot of people they collaborated with in it. The guy in the front you do not know is Earl, he used to be with Voiceplay, but left for personal reasons. The woman is Honey Larochelle. She has sang with them before. Also, I highly reccomend thier cover of Vallhalla Calling. The current members of VP are Layne, Geoff, Eli(sounds like jelly) and Ceasar. J None was part of VP, but is now the frontman for Navy Band Northwest.
The funny thing is, HF and VP were in separate states filming their parts. Voiceplay in Florida and Home Free in Texas. So the very end was absolutely genius.
This was a battle for the sing off. But they ( Home Free) never needed it so they put it out. They also did a collaboration with Filharmonics on the sing off "I'm Alright" from Caddyshack. This was another battle, but it really didn't seem like it. If you notice it still has Chris Rupp in it. #HomeFree
My favourite part of this will always be these two bits: the bgvs in Austin's verse are "see you later alligator", and the lyric change by VoicePlay of "cause my zombie taught me better than that".
This one doesn’t get much attention or requests for reactors. So glad someone requested it for you two. It is so much fun to watch! Lol If it’s more collaborations you request, I’ll second the motion for one mentioned in another comment (“Just Sing”) from Voice Play. They collaboration with many of the people from their season of the Sing Off, plus some other guests (and a surprise guest you’ll recognize). Another great collaboration is from Peter Hollens and Home Free with U2’s cover of “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For”. It also includes Patrons of both artists. It’s fabulous!
Such a fun video. To see another head-to-head - one that actually aired on The Sing-Off. Heck out “I’m Alright” (a Kenny Loggins’ song from the movie Caddyshack) with Home Free vs. The Philharmonics - it’s another blast!!
I really enjoyed your reaction and understanding and appreciation of both groups without comparing one negatively against the other- thanks! I am a new subscriber looking forward to more of your reactions. As other "Home Fries" and "Voice Players" have stated in the comments, this video was done to be a faceoff when they competed in season 4 of the' Sing Off' but was never done because Voice Play was eliminated halfway through the competition so they did not faceoff. However, both groups enjoyed this so much they did it together when they went on the 'Sing Off' tour (they really are close friends very supportive of each other despite their different styles and approaches to acapella music). During this time period, Geoff and his wife, Kathy and other members of Voice Play were working as performers for Universal theme park in Orlando, Florida at the "Beetlejuice Rock&Roll Graveyard Review" attraction and performed at Universal's annual, month long "Halloween Horror Nights" while Home Free was touring as a Country/Folk group at various festivals and county fairs of that nature- thus the Zombie Vs Hillbillies theme came into play here. The behind the scenes of Sing Off tour has some sweet interaction and camaraderie as both groups share the same sense of humor.
The groups are friends. They picked this song if they ever faced elimination on the Sing Off together but they never did (Home Free won the competition in 2013). They decided to do this song on tour after the show. Lot’s of fun!!! 😍😄🤣
They did this skit on The Sing-Off tour. After the tour was finished they did this video with all the costumes and makeup that VoicePlay is known for. #TheatreKidsOfAcapella. Different members of Home Free Tim, Chris, and Rob have collaborated with VoicePlay. VoicePlay members have changed over the years. Here is where you can find VoicePlays' complete history from Huldra Draco th-cam.com/video/R6WxCwHnebI/w-d-xo.html
#Home Free and #Voice Play were on the same season of the sing off. The Woman named Honey was part of #VoicePlay at the time. This was done after the show aired. Tim showed Geoff how to do the low bass growl that Tim is famous for.
04:46 back row Geoff Castellucci, Tony Wakim (one of the early members, doesnt sing in group anymore but involved in the production side at Pattycake Studios with Layne), Layne Stein. Front row: Honey LaRochelle (joined them for tv show the sing off and has done songs since), Earl Elkins (Founding member along with Geoff and Layne - has a locely high voice but left in July 2020), Eli Jacobson
VP & HF were on the same season of The Sing-Off. Every episode had an "Ultimate Sing-Off" where the bottom two groups had to sing a "battle" song. Survivor was one of these songs. HF was never in the bottom two. VP & HF, after the Sing-Off concluded, thought this would be fun to do for a video. They also performed this song/ skit on The Sing-Off Tour. No competition; they are all friends. HF probably chose hillbillies because of country music. (A lot of country music roots are from the Appalachian Mtns region of the US, especially the South.) #HomeFree #HighlyReActive
Thank you for the intro. I know it’s human nature to compare and have a “favorite”, but both of these groups are so talented. Definitely a case of both/and, not either/or. How fortunate are we that we have such fantasticly entertaining music to enjoy!
The Sing-Off, an acapella competition show, had a challenge where the two lowest-rated groups had to face each other off in a singing duel to retain their place in the competition. The winner of this "sing off" stayed in the show. Besides their competition pieces, all the groups had to prepare the show's preselected song in case they landed in the bottom two. They all had to practice with each of the groups for the duel. The song Survivor was one of the songs chosen for a duel. Neither Home Free nor Voiceplay were placed in the sing-off that used Survivor. However, the two groups had so much fun rehearsing this song that they decided to do this video. As you probably know by now, Voiceplay is a more theatrical group while Home Free leans more toward country although they can and do all genres. The reason that Home Free is dressed like hillbillies is because to pass The Sing-Off's audition, Home Free had to be the show's token country group. The Sing-Off in many ways was like a reality show. There had never been a country group before on The Sing-Off. They were eager to have a country group because the country was so popular and sellable. The producer of the show was inspired to think of Home Free as a country group because they had sung Life is a Highway for the audition. The song was originally a rock song, but Rascal Flats made it popular at the time as a country song. Home Free decided to allow themselves to be labeled a country group by the show to secure a spot in the competition. They had voted on the decision. Tim and Rob were against it. Tim especially did not want to be in a country group. He had actually quit the opportunity to be a solo country singer. Austin and Chris were for being labeled as a country group. Austin, the newest member, was enthusiastic about being a country group. He pointed out that they could still do other types of music despite being labeled country. Chris didn't care if the group was labeled country. He just wanted to be on TV. Adam was the deciding vote. He voted for them to be labeled a country group. Tim later said "Thank God that he had been outvoted." He now accepts the fact that the universe in some way has steered him to a career in country music, although he can and does other types of music. Home Free never meant to win The Sing-Off. Their plan was simply not to be the first group eliminated on the show. They were there merely to get more exposure for their professional regional group. They already had a full schedule of shows to return to when they were eliminated. However, they were never one of the bottom two groups. Voiceplay was one of the bottom two groups in one episode. This was primarily due to their choice of material which didn't display their voices well. They won their sing-off duel and were in the semifinals along with Home Free. The semi-finals had the last six groups paired off for another elimination round of sing-off. Home Free and Voiceplay were not matched against each other during this round. You should watch both groups in their performances during these rounds. Voiceplay and a college acapella group (can't remember the name) did an outstanding performance to the theme of Rocky. Honey Larochelle, Voiceplay's lead singer for The Sing-Off was the only girl. Home Free smashed it out of the park with their performance with the group The Filharmonics. You really ought to see this performance. They got a standing ovation from the audience and the judges. Be sure to get a version that shows the guys from Filharmonic teaching Rob to move "like a mermaid" during their rehearsal. Also, the comments from the judges are worth hearing. Talking about hillbillies, you ought to watch Hillbilly Bone by Home Free.
I don't think they see themselves in competition. Their styles are so different. I don't think I'm the first here to recommend VoicePlay's Just Sing. Keep the closed captions on and keep your eyes on Geoff's face when Tim pops up. Too funny. Another good collab is Rob joining VoicePlay for ACA Top 10 Movie Themes. The boys are there usual funny selves. Also, I suggest watching the live version of this number. Home Free & Voice Play feat. Emoni 'Survivor' #SingOffTour will bring it right to you. This one is with Emoni instead of Honey LaRochelle and they aren't in costume.
