Thanks for your comment. I pretty much got that same approach to Onshape: I wonder if something could be done -for example use mate connectors to define functionality as in this model, am amazed how easily this goes, and then I feel so enthusiastic about it that I want to share this.

what measurements are you using. I see the #'s but are they mm, inches, cm etc.
All this is in mm.
for some reason when i go to make the piston slider mate, it come with an error saying that "mate overdefines the assembly (hidden)"
