  • I had no idea why I started this project and no clue where it would end up.
Many years ago I found myself running a beautiful stretch of beach inside Fort Wooden State Park (the actual beach shown 8 seconds into this video), and as I was running a pod of harbor porpoises decided to join my just yards off shore. I had no idea the species, nor did I care, but I raced the pod for the longest time and the result was a fascination with them ever since.
I posted my progress on this build to our local Nextdoor site, and being the new guy in town, I did not expect much interest from neighbors. Man, was I wrong! My posts of the project were the highest "liked" in the community, and word spread to our local marine science center of the guy building a porpoise in his garage.
A few messages and an invite later and we'd found the perfect home in the Port Townsend Marine Science Center in Fort Worden. It seems that life comes full-circle from time to time, right?

The project was a blast from start to finish, and sharing it with my kids, my science geek wife, and our new neighbors has been a great experience. The fact it now resides for all to see in the current (and future expanded) Port Townsend Marines Science Center is an incredibly rewarding result.
I hope you enjoyed the build and please consider subscribing for more videos like this!

Wow. That is beautiful. So fun to watch it take shape. You should be an instructor at Port Townsend School of Woodworking.

I love seeing the work that the instructors and students produce on their social media pages. Such talent! I might be a little too abstract for that venue, however 😂

What an amazing project! And what an eye for detail! You made that look way too easy 😂 love seeing your skills on both large and small carvings!

Thanks! It’s always fun mixing things up in the shop. My newly finished project is just about the opposite end of the spectrum and is a tiny carving, so nice to have some variety!

haha imagine one of his kids goes on a field trip there and her teachers think she's lying when she says "my dad made that!"

My kiddos love to help out any time in the shop! They’re so curious (like I was growing up) about how things are made and my hope with projects like this is to show them that if you can dream it, you can build it!

Looks beautiful! May I ask what clay you used to sculpt the eye lids?

Thank you! The product is called “Magic Sculpt” and it’s a two-part epoxy clay you can pick up off Amazon. Great stuff and dries really solid.

What did you use for the ‘hard coat’? Most of the big foam sculptures I’ve seen get fibreglassed and I really don’t want to start that 😅

I used Roscoe’s Foam Coat for this one, and it’s a great alternative to fiberglassing (and it doesn’t smell). The foam coat sands easy and is flame resistant, but you can’t stand on it or really abuse the carving like you can with fiberglass. I do use the Roscoe’s as a base layer as well if I am fiberglassing to avoid potentially melting the foam underneath due to the fiberglass heat reaction. I totally recommend the Roscoe’s though. Great stuff.

Perfection!! May I know what kind of paints you used for this project?

I use mostly Golden airbrush paints, though the cost is pretty high. I have now shifted to using a brand off Amazon that is for less expensive and seems to spray well. I’ll do a review of them later once I have a bit more spray time.
