    No matter what you think of him or the people who wingsuit, you can't deny they are the embodiment of human courage and curiosity. For thousands of years people have been dreaming of doing exactly this and it should be celebrated.

      Sounds like Mussolini's famous quote: "It is better to live one day as a lion than 100 years as a lamb". It sounds good, but it's a false dichotomy.

      He's a professional mountain climber. It's 100% certain that he's entirely aware of the thinning atmosphere at higher altitudes, because it's a fundamental part of his job to know.

    • @michaelsuede
      @michaelsuede 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      choronos I guess we will find out. It's an easy mistake to overlook. I can tell you his practice jump they show wasn't at 29,000 feet, that's for sure. It's a whole different ball game at that altitude.

    • @MaximGhost
      @MaximGhost 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yup, and one of them was the world record fastest Everest climb according to 7:23

    • @cliveramsbotty6077
      @cliveramsbotty6077 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I don't believe he holds the the speed record for Everest, a Sherpa went base camp to summit in just over 8 hours with oxygen, 20 hours without. The solo summits is an insane achievement - I'd be keen to know if he used the lines fixed on the mountain by the Sherpas at the start of the season and if he had stores placed at the camps on the way up.

    • @MaximGhost
      @MaximGhost 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      clive ramsbotty Sherpa Pemba Dorje still holds the record for fastest ascent with oxygen from Everest South Base Camp at 8 hours and 10 mins, which he did in 2004. Ogwyn used oxygen also but his world record ascent seems to have been from the North Side in 2008. Though, looks like Discovery Channel has it incorrect on their own web page by saying, "In 2008, Joby set the world record for the fastest ascent of Mt. Everest, climbing from the base of the SOUTH side route to the summit in just nine and a half hours."

    • @cliveramsbotty6077
      @cliveramsbotty6077 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Very good points being made here... There is sort of an unofficial divide between the records set by Sherpas and those who aren't Sherpa. Also mentioned above you can climb Everest from the North side to circumvent some ofthe dangers and logistical challenges associated with cromming the Khumbu icefall on the south route.
      Regardless of whether or not you go for an alpine ascent or a more staggered operation you will still almost inevitably have to rely on the fixed lines and ladders fitted to the route by the Sherpas at the start of the season.
      The siege style of ascent helps with acclimatisation - you go to camp 1, come back to base, go to camp 2, back to camp 1, all the while ferrying supplies such as oxygen tanks, equipment etc. But either way you are very unlikely to be carried down or rescued once above 8,000 metres, regardless of the size of your budget and operation.
      Base camp to Summit in 8 hours is absolutely fucking mental, those Sherpas do some superhuman shit on Chomolungma, guys have done it twice in one week, 20+ times, without supllpemental oxygen, this year two guys did the triple crown in one go... Bonkers.

    • @cliveramsbotty6077
      @cliveramsbotty6077 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      *****
      Yeah it's mad shit. To do that though it needs to be your lifes work and you need a long genetic history of adaptation for high altitude over several hundred years. It's a nice idea to muse on that climbers will start treating it as a sporting summit but at the moment it's just too difficult and too dangerous... Above 8,000m you are quite literally dying - your lungs and brain fill with liquid - it's a blast up to the top and back before death gets you. There are a bunch of dead bodies on the mountain you have to walk past.
      Just getting to base camp requires huge fitness, reaching the summit is akin to an ultra marathon, an olympic gold, a player of the year award... You are so right when you say you can't make sense of it!
      Climbers already take roids for the altitude sickness, dexamethazone. Fascinating right!?

      Also did you not catch his comment " this footage is so old the guy who shot it is dead now" and then " he was my best friend and we lost him last June". You know your in a club with a short life expectancy when people are thinking they lost their friend along time ago and it was last year! lol

    • @myassassin7352

    • @murrayflewelling1258
      @murrayflewelling1258 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Myassassin- I appreciate your comment because I am starting my own channel in order to have discussions about key news events within a couple of weeks, and how we use language is very important to the massage we are trying to communicate.
      I want you to think again at what I meant when I used the example I made, because while you may be right and I want your thoughts, I believe you missed the subtle point I was making.
      At 5.46/ he says ," it's weird, cause this footage is so old that the guy who shot the footage who is flying with me is dead now, died ya,there he is,there's the man,,,,we lost Jeff last June"
      My comment is an attempt to point out, that in the mind of the narrator, last June or 2 years ago is a LONG time. You are correct when you say it is his friend's death that took place within a year and the footage was shot sometime in the past, but what the narrator uses, ie the time period of his friends death, hardly gives his audience a perspective on what is old footage. For instance if you knew my dad was 80, and we are watching a documentary on Desert Storm, during the Iraq conflict under the first president Bush, and I say, "wow my dad had not even retired when this footage was made", you instantly have a reference point for a time period in mind, since you have an idea of what age most people retire.
      My point here is not to poke fun at a fascinating and thrilling VICE story (as they almost always are) but to make anyone paying close attention realize- HOLY SHIT THIS GUY IS USING A REFERENCE THAT COULD BE AS LITTLE AS A YEAR AGO, TO EXPLAIN TO THE VIEWER, THAT IS A LONG TIME IN THE SPORT OF FLYING WITHOUT BEING A BIRD,LOL. Had I even a 1% interest in trying my hand at this,- aw hobby? you can bet the idea left at the speed of light when he said that. ( and notice, you instantly get the speed of light, as really fast)
      Your thoughts on my explanation are important, because I want my channel to ad value to discussions.
      what people say and how they act seem to be out of touch in today's society. As an example take private prisons for profit and the way they influence the US criminal system with regard to minorities. ( I am not a minority and while stating that should be irrelevant any objective person knows it is not) If you are the CEO of Insys which is the main company involved in Fentanal, and you deliberately engage in medicare fraud to boost wall street stock prices, chances are you already know, that no one from your company,including you, will see a day in prison even though the companies fraud was directly responsible for numerous people dying. However, had you got caught selling an once of weed in a state with mandatory sentences, it could have resulted in life behind bars even though no one died from what you did.What's worse is (correct me if I am wrong) there are instances where weed is know decriminalized in states where people have been and continue to be in prison for seemingly petty offences. Theses two things are out of line with what decent, intelligent people would classify as justice, but will continue, until US citizens make whatever Government is sitting change it.
      Thanks for reading

The problems for everyone around either type is that as long as they are actively doing either of these activities, it's possible that their next use/jump could be their last. I just don't find wingsuit jumping to be anywhere near as mentally damaging or incapacitating.

      +LittleRainGames,
      That's complete shite, not to be uttered by anyone who has not nearly died doing something they later decided would've been worth dying for. Those seven people took that chance thinking they'd beat the odds. And will you actually tell me that at that last moment before their demise they felt no regret? Get real. Their actual responses were more like, "fuck, I fucked up. I'm sorry Mom".
      The only people who have any business doing this kind of stuff are literal superhumans, as well as those few schmucks who really deserve Darwin awards. There have been far too many decent yet foolhardy risk-takers who've broken the hearts of far too many friends and family members. People, don't try this daredevil shit unless there's no one who cares about you, or unless you're fucking Neo or Superman. You *might* be that good, but with these odds, you're better off never knowing.

He also talked about his daughter being important and intended to take a long break, but after doing a 1000 foot dive with just ropes for Guinness, he decided to do it one more time before packing up the ropes and just kept on going to the bottom. TH-cam has a lot of his crazy footage .

    I wouldn't call it tragic, like what the fuck do you expect to happen when you jump out of a plane or off a cliff in a wing suit? Or climb a dangerous mountain? Obviously people are going to die... hard to feel bad for people that die from something so stupid. Tragedy is when something horrible happens to someone that was not their fault. Those guys basically already died for nothing.

    I hate to be that guy, and trying to set a world's first/world record does slightly change things, but Climbing Mt. Everest has always been most dangerous for the
    Sherpas that are hired by westerners (Like Joby). The Sherpas do 95% of the work, going ahead and setting the camps, ropes, and ladders for their clients. This was very much known and understood for people like Joby, and has only become more obvious the last couple of years. Also, the amount of trash, and dead bodies that are stacking up creates another problem. The mountain is often overcrowded due to the overwhelming amount of rich Americans and Europeans that essentially pay to have the mountain climbed for them. I understand this is an achievement, but painting this guy as a total hero is kind of crazy to me.
