"Make sure you use the correct USB-C port for your Mac" ... I think you just singled out the cause for the woes I had when installing the OS on an external SSD when getting my M1 mini ! So you can't use the USB-C port closest to the edge of the mini, to connect the short TB3/4 USB4 cables that typically come with these enclosures ! I'd bet most ppl will use that port on a Mini for an external drive
good video, I learned a few things. One thing I didn't hear mentioned is that Apple does not support the use of Apple Intelligence when booted from an external drive. That may not be a deal killer for many people, but it's worth knowing going into it. Thx
@@jefferygriffin9697 Apple Intelligence will not work. I don’t know about Apple Pay. I’m still not impressed with intelligence, so I don’t think it’s a big loss to not have Apple Intelligence built-in.
@@cicolandi9897 yes that should work if you can set it up on a working Mac so if you have a friend or coworker who has a Mac, you should be able to do the install process to the SSD and then it will work on your Mac that has a non-functional internal hard drive
@@cicolandi9897 you just need to choose the start up disc at boot time so with Apple Silicon you have to hold the power button until it lets you select and then on a non-Apple Silicon. I think you told the option key when you power on until you see the boot drive selection screen.
With a new Mac mini M4, I have established all my files including the boot files on a Samsung 990Pro. Everything appears to work correctly, but when trying a software update, I receive the following: "User Interaction Required. An error occurred while installing the selected updates." Do you have guidance as to what interaction is required? I have full back up files and a bootable drive for emergencies on separate drives.
Reformat the drive with APFS and make sure your user account is an admin account. This article has some tips, but I don’t know what will work for you. Let me know if it helps. discussions.apple.com/thread/254774625
@@PaulSolt On Apple Silicon, use USB4, it's even faster. You could easily put together a TB3 enclosure or USB4/TB4 and fast 2TB SSD for under $200 during Black Friday sales Using USB3 is slooooow for a boot drive
@@MatthiasHamilton you need to buy an enclosure and a NVM.e M.2 drive. That’s more work and expense than most need. I agree it is faster, but what I recommended is cheaper. I’m curious, why do you want to use macOS on an external drive?

Yes! I didn’t know the DFU port would be a failure point.

You could use Xcodes predictive code completion it in the first beta, but you can’t do it anymore.
More of an issue is that it won't update the OS either
You have to use Terminal for that
sudo softwareupdate -i -a -R
@@Wannes_ is that true? I hadn’t noticed the update issue yet, but I haven’t tried to update it. I’ve only done a fresh install to play around.

Make sure you’re not on the DFU port.
@ I gather the centre T.bolt port is the DFU port. I have confirmed my installation.
Thank you for your prompt feedback.
@@PaulSolt Thank you Paul. I gather there are problems with booting from an external SSD. I will wait and see what happens with future updates.
@BorderTerrier-yk2hw from my experience, it can sometimes fail with random errors, so it would be worthwhile just trying it again from the beginning.
I WOULDNT RECOMMEND SAMSUNG SSD'S TO DO THIS I WOULD RECOMMEND A SSD THAT IS THUNDERBOLT 4 OR 5 COMPATIBLE..
The cost is prohibitive. You'd have to spend $300+ for a Thunderbolt 3 drive. USB 3.1 or USB 3.2 makes the most sense for a quick macOS install.
I have RAID arrays that are Thunderbolt, but I'm not going to install macOS on one of those.
