    Seeing Karn animate artifacts to attack with them rather than blowing up lands reminds me of a more innocent time.

    To the lovely patron who made Bosh waddle through this format, thank you! I've never enjoyed magic more than I did since I was a kid until watching this Vid

  • @gothblin
    @gothblin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    I really loved this. This era of Magic was when I started playing, and I still have a massive soft spot for my favourite Beast cards: Ravenous Baloth, Blastoderm, Krosan Cloudscraper (biggest creature ever! At the time, anyway), Contested Cliffs, Wirewood Savage and especially Spiritmonger, so seeing some of them was wonderful. Also a lot of other former powerhouses (even if only in decklists): painlands, Dr. Teeth, non-Tarmo Lhurgoyfs, BoPs and Akroma (eat your heart out, Griselbrand!). Delightful!
    The games were equally delightful. Who knew 66-card Elves could win a game? Also great to see you both laughing about misplays at the end. Thank you to both of you and to Naggledak for sponsoring this trip down nostalgia lane.

    I think part of the similarity you identified between Pioneer and Premodern is that they both contain, like, a single coherent game design philosophy. Modern straddles a few of them and Legacy includes everything but Premodern and Pioneer both feel very consistent in terms of how cards and play patterns feel

    • @oneinfinity
      @oneinfinity ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Makes sense, both of these formats have similarly small card pools. Difference is that Pioneer's card pool is still growing and will at some point outgrow its own consistency, while Premodern by definition will never change. That's actually what I dislike the most about the format. It's driven purely by nostalgia, and once that wears off it will grow stale rather quickly. Getting to play with new cards and seeing the format change around them is probably the best thing about playing Magic after all, and you will never be able to do that in Premodern.

    Seeing the TerraGeddon game was a treat! That the deck young teen me wished I could build when I got a Trounce-o-matic pre-con and a Terravore from a fistful of Odyssey packs for my birthday one year, Threshold has inspired my lifelong love of graveyard matters decks! Werebear still has one of my favorite flavor texts ever as well.

    Thanks for featuring Premodern. If you play in any events in the future, look into Pink Prison. If getting to Ancestral every turn while playing a tutor suite of silver bullets aren’t selling points for you, I don’t know what is.

    You mentioned playing with all of the old bordered cards, and it reminded me just how historied magic is, because I hear about all the older sets, but I didn't experience them, since I was born after Scourge and other sets were printed.

    This was super useful for me. I was talking to a friend about Magic from before 2011, when they started, since I started in 1996. Explaining to them that Magic was different isn't the same as *showing* them that Magic was different. And this is still using current rules. Still, I think this will help them start to understand Magic from a different perspective. They've never had MtG without Planeswalkers, for example. Super excited to share this with them. Thanks for sharing this cool format with us. Loved this showcase.

  • @LinaDanceMachina
    @LinaDanceMachina 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    This hits me directly in the nostalgia. Thanks for doing it.
    This era of magic was the era that existed when I first got "serious" about the game. This format is made of the cards that a real human could actually acquire during that era. No alpha/beta/unlimited/revised nonsense accellerating the game, and, what appears to be a thoughtful banlist. Really enjoying this, commenting mid-watch.

  • @overrated727

    I still remember the first time I saw a foil Apocalypse pack Spiritmonger. Beautiful. So many of the foil gold cards from that era came out fantastic -- Deed is another one that springs to mind. It's nice to see there's a format where some of those classics can find a home.

    The list:
    4 Thran Dynamo
    4 Thran Tome
    4 Sphere of Resistance
    4 Tangle Wire
    4 Mind Stone
    4 Mishra's Helix
    4 Smokestack

    4 Ancient Tomb
    4 Urza's Mine
    4 Urza's Power Plant
    4 Urza's Tower
    2 City of Traitors
    Side:
    2 Ivory Tower
    2 Defense Grid
    2 Tormod's Crypt
    2 Powder Keg
    1 Ensnaring Bridge
    1 Nevinyrral's Disk

    This format seems cool! I think I still prefer my formats having new toys put into them every so often, but it's nice to see a place where a lot of these previously-renowned cards can be in the sun again. I think the specific exclusion of certain color must-haves is nice to not only separate its identity from Legacy but also to just create more interesting play patterns in general and allows non-blue decks specifically a bit more of a chance to shine than in your typical Eternal formats.

  • @rossmcbeath4997
    @rossmcbeath4997 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This format looks like big fun. Very enjoyable watch!
    I will say there are a couple of things I don't love about the format:
    1. The mana. In particular, enemy colored fixers are not only sparse, but they are sparse RELATIVE TO allied fixers, because they used to print allied fixers more often. This creates weird pulls toward allied two-color decks over enemy ones. Hesitating to play rock because blue-white control has better mana isn't great.
    2. Format legality is a little confusing in some ways. For instance, having Portal and Starter 2000 not legal makes it so you can't just go off the time period a card was printed in.
    But otherwise, yea, a great combo of nostalgia and novelty. Would love to see more of this, but understand if you are pulled towards more established realms.
