    I would love to continue to hear about your process in finding a new curriculum. :) I love that you get a whole day as a grade level to look at student data and make plans. We only get a 45 min period. I would love to know more about what that day looks like. I particularly love the idea that SEL is included in your WIN block. Do kiddos go every day during that time for work with a counselor and for the whole quarter until you meet as a team again? How long is your WIN block again? And how does your building schedule that WIN time? Is it a 30 min. block and kids in the grade level go out every day at that time for the support that they need? What if they need more than one area of support like reading AND math? or reading AND SEL? Sorry for all the questions, but I have wanted this for so long in our building.. we need RTI for SEL just as much as academic areas!

      Our data day is truly one of my favorite days!! We have an entire day run by our literacy and math coordinators. In the morning, we take a look at the grade-wide literacy data and make observations of growth and things to apply to our practice. Then, with the reading specialists we review all students who fell in the at risk category (in order of severity) and those who were seen during WIN time for literacy since the fall to determine if we should make any changes. Along with teacher and interventionist input we then decide which students should receive Tier 2 support through either pull-out or push-in! We do the same thing for math before and after lunch and then the afternoon is set up for our SEL team to come in and we discuss student behaviors/social skills with them and determine who may need extra support in a social group. The literacy and math WIN groups are set for 5x20, but the SEL groups are only 1x20 to allow for our SEL team to meet with students as needed and per their IEPs etc.
      The way it is set up, our WIN block is 40 minutes so some students receive both reading and math extra support. The push in blocks happen during our regular reading or math time so some students are instead supported during the typical block which opens up scheduling for a student if they need to be seen during WIN for SEL as well. The 1x20 SEL block does allow for flexibility in scheduling too since it is not every day!

    We are in the middle of the same process looking at new literacy programs. Our district has narrowed it down to 3 and we are now going to visit schools using these programs to see them in action. Excited to watch your process!

    I am a homeschool mom and almost exclusively watch homeschool curriculum type videos but I’ve loved seeing yours and others in the public school to get ideas and also hear about your own experiences/struggles/wins. What is the reason for a new literacy program is it primarily to streamline the districts?

    I used your idea of find the fish with our “red” words which are like your heart words. I used cat stickers for Find the Kitty. Thank you for the idea! I love fill the heart idea! I think I’ll try that too.

    I've had great success with Collaborative Classroom. They have a comprehensive literacy program. I started with Being A Reader 1st edition. Now they have Making Meaning 3rd edition which goes K-6th as the reading curriculum and then they have Being A Writer for the writing piece. They include all the pieces a teacher needs in one program.

    Thank you for another great video. I always look forward to seeing these videos on a Sunday to know how the week went so I can also get some ideas for my classroom. You are also fortunate to have team meetings with other staff to build on the curriculum and look over data. A lot of teachers are not able to get those teambuilding meetings to accomplish things and get help; it's a privilege to do so. Thank you again for this informative video.

    I would also love to have more information regarding the process of choosing a literacy curriculum especially with the rising major concern over the number of students not reading on grade level and the continued shift from balanced literacy to structured literacy

    Our district is in the middle of adopting a curriculum too. We have to make a decision by the end of the year I believe. We’ve narrowed it down to the 2 curriculums you mentioned. Our first grade team started using CKLA Knowledge to test it out. The language, comprehension, and vocabulary are strong, but they are very lengthy for a first grader. Also, if we implement CKLA, we will have to give up Heggerty and UFLI. So we are nervous about that because we’ve seen such success with those 2 curriculums. I’d love to hear your process.

    • @SusanJonesTeaching
      @SusanJonesTeaching  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have definitely heard that we will likley have to cut some pieces out due to the lengthiness of the lessons. We are currently using Fundations and Heggerty but Fundations is only partially approved and I don't think we will get to hold onto it so it will be interesting to watch how it all progresses! I will definitely keep everyone updated!

    Hi Susan! Im so glad you talked about those fluency passages. I teach second grade, but have struggled using those in our fundations lessons. The second grade passages are long. And I feel like I can't fit everything into our Fundations block as it is! I like the routine you have... Do you spend more than one day with the passage? If so, what is that routine like? And where is the best place to ask you questions? Here, instagram, email,...? Thanks!!

    • @SusanJonesTeaching
      @SusanJonesTeaching  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Kristy! I usually only do a direct instruction lesson with the fluency passages once (where we echo read, choral read, partner read, etc.) but then they go in students' fluency folders so they are reading them more often! They read from their fluency folders when they come to my back table and they also spend one WIN block per week reading from them as well! In terms of asking questions, you can definitely ask me here - I like to check my comments the day of and after I put out a new video, but I do somtimes forget to circle back to older videos, so if it is a specific question you can just email me (susanjonesteaching@gmail.com)!

    I have another question.. do you sell your Spot the Fish? I love that idea!! I wanted to know your opinion on high frequency words. We have the new standards based report cards and we use Fundations. Our district wants us to use the grade level trick words as the high frequency words we assess. For K and 1, that makes sense to me. But for 2nd grade, many of the words don't seem like high frequency words to me (like America, earth, shall,..) What are your thoughts?

    Hi Susan! I really enjoy your videos. I also use Fundations and I was wondering what types of activities you do to help students practicing spelling the trick words. Thanks!

    • @SusanJonesTeaching
      @SusanJonesTeaching  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      For spelling the trick words, we practice the same way we spell our regular words, but we use the heart part method! Essentially students still tap the sounds they hear and I have them draw a line for each sound (if we are doing this on white boards which we typically do) and then they first write the sounds they know, then we try to remember the heart part and write that last, then put a heart over it! For example, the word could. We would tap the sounds and draw three lines. Then write the c and d (and I would note how these make their expected sounds). Then I would remind students our heart part is that middle and they would have to memorize oul. I also teach should and would at the same time!

    • @SusanJonesTeaching
      @SusanJonesTeaching  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Then for extra practice, we would play a game like roll, read, and write or find the fish! But I like to use the words alot in our dictation sentences so we can get used to writing them.

    More details in exactly what's going to be in the curriculum. From what it sounds like. It should all be done from scratch. Stop trying to make the old stuff work. Just put thought into it and begin with scratch. Additionally this is not going to be a one year roll out. This looks like a 6 to 7 year implementation. Grade level by grade level.
