This sounds like love. More so than any love song I've heard. It's not an obsession, a heartbreak, nor a lust. There's no impositions of dominance, subservience, masculinity, femininity, or any other expectations of how love "should be". It is two people just enjoying all that is life together. The flow leading to an end isn't something to fear or fight, either. The entire dynamic is a natural flow, and that is the most precious love. It's beautiful.
It sure is lovely! But in my way of seeing is more than just romantic love, the lyric is about the rains or march in Brazil because is when the summer ends and starts autunm, i think that is a love about life. I was born in the second of march so every year after my birthday it rains...
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. If you look at the Portuguese translation or the English lyrics what Jobim wrote, it is an amazing insight in a long reflection on life. Marco, March is the fall of Brazil, and so is so much like a "September Song" or like Sinatra's "It was a very good year" in a life reflection in the autumn of both the world around one and the life of someone. Somehow, not sad, filled with joy, and yet also full of experience and reflection of a life well lived, but with knowledge that more good is ahead.

What a great song. ENGLISH LYRICS HERE: A stick, a stone, It's the end of the road, It's the rest of a stump, It's a little alone It's a sliver of glass, It is life, it's the sun, It is night, it is death, It's a trap, it's a gun The oak when it blooms, A fox in the brush, A knot in the wood, The song of a thrush The wood of the wind, A cliff, a fall, A scratch, a lump, It is nothing at all It's the wind blowing free, It's the end of the slope, It's a beam, it's a void, It's a hunch, it's a hope And the river bank talks of the waters of March, It's the end of the strain, The joy in your heart The foot, the ground, The flesh and the bone, The beat of the road, A slingshot's stone A fish, a flash, A silvery glow, A fight, a bet, The range of a bow The bed of the well, The end of the line, The dismay in the face, It's a loss, it's a find A spear, a spike, A point, a nail, A drip, a drop, The end of the tale A truckload of bricks in the soft morning light, The shot of a gun in the dead of the night A mile, a must, A thrust, a bump, It's a girl, it's a rhyme, It's a cold, it's the mumps The plan of the house, The body in bed, And the car that got stuck, It's the mud, it's the mud Afloat, adrift, A flight, a wing, A hawk, a quail, The promise of spring And the riverbank talks of the waters of March, It's the promise of life It's the joy in your heart A stick, a stone, It's the end of the road It's the rest of a stump, It's a little alone A snake, a stick, It is John, it is Joe, It's a thorn in your hand and a cut in your toe A point, a grain, A bee, a bite, A blink, a buzzard, A sudden stroke of night A pin, a needle, A sting, a pain, A snail, a riddle, A wasp, a stain A pass in the mountains, A horse and a mule, In the distance the shelves rode three shadows of blue And the riverbank talks of the waters of March, It's the promise of life in your heart, in your heart A stick, a stone, The end of the road, The rest of a stump, A lonesome road A sliver of glass, A life, the sun, A knife, a death, The end of the run And the riverbank talks of the waters of March, It's the end of all strain, It's the joy in your heart.

This song was a background song on a commercial on television AYALA MALL in Philippines during 1994. I'd been looking for this for for almost 26 years. Finally found on youtube accidentally.
i 've been looking for this song for ages. i couldn't rem the name.. i was searching for ides of march, the ides of spring, tides of spring, then i stumbled onto it. i can play this song over and over and over and each time i hear it i...
each time i hear it i feel profoundly changed but i cannot truly put it in words. i don't understand most of what they sing cos i only know tiny amounts of Portuguese and Spanish and studied Latin a long time ago. but it doesn't matter because each time i invent my own little lyrical version in my head... based on the title, of course... the way you feel in the spring, the way your attitude changes toward women, the way everything seems to come alive around, everything smells diffferent. i wish i could express myself better but that's about it
it must be interesting thinking about the song in this new perspective of spring, cause since Brazil is in the southern hemisphere, the song actually talks about autumn.
Like fine wine, you don't appreciate it at first then you evolve to the level where you savor it because you have discovered a new world...that is quality living.
I've never heard of Elis Regina. Beautiful singing! I have heard of Antonio Carlos Jobim. I've never heard of him referred to as *"Tom"* Jobim before. I knew he comoposed some great songs, but I didn't know he sang as well.
In Brazil, he is known as Tom Jobim, maybe you'll find more of his beautiful songs looking for his nickname since no one here ever called him antonio carlos :)

What a great song. ENGLISH LYRICS HERE:
A stick, a stone,
It's the end of the road,
It's the rest of a stump,
It's a little alone
It's a sliver of glass,
It is life, it's the sun,
It is night, it is death,
It's a trap, it's a gun
The oak when it blooms,
A fox in the brush,
A knot in the wood,
The song of a thrush
The wood of the wind,
A cliff, a fall,
A scratch, a lump,
It is nothing at all
It's the wind blowing free,
It's the end of the slope,
It's a beam, it's a void,
It's a hunch, it's a hope
And the river bank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the end of the strain,
The joy in your heart
The foot, the ground,
The flesh and the bone,
The beat of the road,
A slingshot's stone
A fish, a flash,
A silvery glow,
A fight, a bet,
The range of a bow
The bed of the well,
The end of the line,
The dismay in the face,
It's a loss, it's a find
A spear, a spike,
A point, a nail,
A drip, a drop,
The end of the tale
A truckload of bricks
in the soft morning light,
The shot of a gun
in the dead of the night
A mile, a must,
A thrust, a bump,
It's a girl, it's a rhyme,
It's a cold, it's the mumps
The plan of the house,
The body in bed,
And the car that got stuck,
It's the mud, it's the mud
Afloat, adrift,
A flight, a wing,
A hawk, a quail,
The promise of spring
And the riverbank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the promise of life
It's the joy in your heart
A stick, a stone,
It's the end of the road
It's the rest of a stump,
It's a little alone
A snake, a stick,
It is John, it is Joe,
It's a thorn in your hand
and a cut in your toe
A point, a grain,
A bee, a bite,
A blink, a buzzard,
A sudden stroke of night
A pin, a needle,
A sting, a pain,
A snail, a riddle,
A wasp, a stain
A pass in the mountains,
A horse and a mule,
In the distance the shelves
rode three shadows of blue
And the riverbank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the promise of life
in your heart, in your heart
A stick, a stone,
The end of the road,
The rest of a stump,
A lonesome road
A sliver of glass,
A life, the sun,
A knife, a death,
The end of the run
And the riverbank talks
of the waters of March,
It's the end of all strain,
It's the joy in your heart.
Obrigado!

god i haven't heard/watched this for 10+ years. this song and particularly this version (and also the one with morelenbaum) has healed me (and my worries!) a hundred times since my college days in the early 2000s and i forgot its magic since i last heard it back in maybe 2010! i learned portuguese very well from listening constantly to jobim/gilberto bossa nova since the 90s in middle school and high school and the lyrics are just as amazing
this is the sweetest video -- I love this song, so much admire Tom Jobim as a songwriter, and am deeply moved by the delight Elis Regina and Jobim show in their duet, plus the pure joy of the music. Thanks for posting this. A classic!
Music the gift of love, joy, sadness, despair, hope and pride
Came here from twitter after this was cited as a brilliant example of the use of the shepard effect. Love it. So beautiful.
This song fills me with joie de vivre...& goose bumps :D
I love Elis Regina...RIP, pretty lady :-(
Theres nothing like this song out there!
Simply beautiful
this video just made me inexplicably happy. I love it. with all of my everything. thanks for sharing. I especially appreciate your commentary.
Pure magic! One of the most beautiful ever written. Timeless! 🤗❤
I've watched it so many times, getting much pleasure.
The connection between these two is so magical! Love it! :)
Thank you Rocky
Just passing the time, walking with a stranger in Australia...duetting...as one does...
This song was a background song on a commercial on television AYALA MALL in Philippines during 1994.
I'd been looking for this for for almost 26 years. Finally found on youtube accidentally.
and you liked it?
Wonderful Sound. It is one of my favorite songs. !!! Nicely Done Duo Team
One of my all time favorite songs. You can feel the joy ❤️
i 've been looking for this song for ages. i couldn't rem the name.. i was searching for ides of march, the ides of spring, tides of spring, then i stumbled onto it.
i can play this song over and over and over and each time i hear it i...
+Narred Darr What is the rest of your sentence...each time you hear it, you...? I agree, btw, this song is so uplifting & goose bumpy :D
each time i hear it i feel profoundly changed but i cannot truly put it in words. i don't understand most of what they sing cos i only know tiny amounts of Portuguese and Spanish and studied Latin a long time ago.
but it doesn't matter because each time i invent my own little lyrical version in my head... based on the title, of course... the way you feel in the spring, the way your attitude changes toward women, the way everything seems to come alive around, everything smells diffferent.
i wish i could express myself better but that's about it
Yes, I agree...there's just something about it that is very moving, uplifting, sweet, profound, catchy, etc, etc...sort of everything good :D
it must be interesting thinking about the song in this new perspective of spring, cause since Brazil is in the southern hemisphere, the song actually talks about autumn.
I got here with “Portuguese jazz duet” after realizing it must not be Spanish, took me about a week to figure it out 😅
Like fine wine, you don't appreciate it at first then you evolve to the level where you savor it because you have discovered a new world...that is quality living.
you dont appreciate it at first because you may ne ignorant
Brilliant. I think this is my favourite song in the whole world - so much said, and sung so beautifully. Jobim was a musical genius.
Welcome, Belinkers.
Haha that's definitely why I'm here!
Same!!!
How did you know 😆
Where did you find that sick pipe
I’m confused 💀 was this a joke?
this is so calming and it reminds me how time was so carefree when I was young..
I've been listening to this song for years and never knew there was a video of it being recorded. It's exactly as I imagined especially with Elis laughing and smiling at the end. Love this song
It’s february 2022, let’s see how many legends are listening to this masterpiece
The Good Folks at “My Dad Wrote a Porno”
Brought me here. Glad I found it.
Sublime. What a performance, what a song!
Wow I finally found it. My mom had a CD with all these kind of songs in her car. Amazing music.
Not a word understood but I love this song. first heard in on the show SeaLab2021
É pau, é pedra, é o fim do caminho
é a chuva chovendo, é conversa ribeira
é o pé, é o chao, é a marcha estradeira
passarinho na mao, pedra de atiradeira
Uma ave no céu, uma ave no chao
é um regato, é uma fonte
é um pedaco de pao
é o fundo do poco, é o fim do caminho
é o carro enguicado, é a lama, é a lama
é um passo, é uma ponte
é um sapo, é uma ra
é um resto de mato, na luz da manha
sao as aguas de marco fechando o verao
é a promessa de vida no teu coracao
É pau, é pedra, é o fim do caminho
É pau, é pedra, é o fim do caminho
É pau, é pedra, é o fim do caminho
É pau, é pedra, é o fim do caminho
Pau, pedra, fim do caminho
resto de toco, pouco sozinho
Pau, pedra, fim do caminho,
resto de toco, pouco sozinho.

Thank you! Muoto obrigado!
siemon j. franken ohhhh I Love you for this. Thank you for the words 😍❤️🌹
Well done bro
Ta boa❤
I'm an American new to the beauty of Brazilian Bossa Nova, and I want to sing the argentinian version so bad. Almost got it!
Back when artists were ARTISTS - NO digital assurance,it's an art to this shit - ment something - TRUE talent
The means of production do not matter. What matters is the emotion they create. Soon machines will be better than artists at stimulating our brain. So what? So nothing. Just enjoy! That's what you were made for.
All of this was prerecorded brother
I love their chemistry.
Perfection.
Elis Regina and Tom Jobim
This is priceless !
Most people don't t know.

Love Jobim and Getz but it still took Sealab 2021 to show me this song. Still in love with it.
Just wonderful. And they look like they are having such fun
If not a video, it would sound terrific, but it so delightful to see these two immortal legends having fun and playful making music to delight everyone, even me who don’t speak Portuguese!
They're actually lip synching to their earlier recording.
This definition is incredibly helpful to put this classic song, one of my lifelong favorites into perspective.
Brilliant Amazing Wonderful - tells us how complex we all are.
I love this.

It took me 3 years and I finally found it. I’m crying
