Waters of March - Águas de Março - Stereo - Elis Regina and Tom Jobim - Aguas de Marco -

  • "Águas de Março" is a Brazilian song composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. Jobim wrote both the English and Portuguese lyrics. The audio was recorded in May, 1972 - this film was made sometime later.
The lyrics do not tell a story, but rather present a series of images that form a collage; nearly every line starts with "É..." ("[It] is..."). In both the Portuguese and English versions of the lyrics, "it" is a stick, a stone, a sliver of glass, a scratch, a cliff, a knot in the wood, a fish, a pin, the end of the road," and many other things, although some specific references to Brazilian culture (festa da cumeeira, garrafa de cana), flora (peroba do campo) and folklore (Matita Pereira) were intentionally omitted from the English version, perhaps with the goal of providing a more universal perspective.
All these details swirling around the central metaphor of "the waters of March" can give the impression of the passing of daily life and its continual, inevitable progression towards death, just as the rains of March mark the end of a Brazilian summer. Both sets of lyrics speak of the water being "the promise of life," perhaps allowing for other, more life-affirming interpretations, and the English contains the additional phrases "the joy in your heart" and the "promise of spring," a seasonal reference that would be more relevant to most of the English-speaking world.
The inspiration for "Águas de Março" comes from Rio de Janeiro's rainiest month. March is typically marked by sudden storms with heavy rains and strong winds that cause flooding in many places around the city. The lyrics and the music have a constant downward progression much like the water torrent from those rains flowing in the gutters, which typically would carry sticks, stones, bits of glass, and almost everything and anything. The orchestration creates the illusion of the constant descending of notes much like Shepard tones.

This sounds like love. More so than any love song I've heard. It's not an obsession, a heartbreak, nor a lust. There's no impositions of dominance, subservience, masculinity, femininity, or any other expectations of how love "should be". It is two people just enjoying all that is life together. The flow leading to an end isn't something to fear or fight, either. The entire dynamic is a natural flow, and that is the most precious love. It's beautiful.

It sure is lovely! But in my way of seeing is more than just romantic love, the lyric is about the rains or march in Brazil because is when the summer ends and starts autunm, i think that is a love about life.
I was born in the second of march so every year after my birthday it rains... São as águas de março fechando o verão...

@@Chill1044 My first real* introduction to Brazilian music was when I impulse purchased a CD at Tower Records. It was called "Obrigado Brazil" (not "Brasil", and I think that was intentional) and was a collection of pieces with Yo-Yo Ma on cello accompanied by other artists, playing samba music. I must have listened to that CD at least a hundred times.
*I say "real introduction" because when I go back and listen to classic Nintendo video game music... there seems to be a great deal of influence from samba. Which makes a lot of sense. The NES sound capabilities were very limited. The "instruments" can't sound like real instruments, so how do you add texture and flavor? With syncopated rhythms and chords that aren't strict triads. Plus you usually want it to be happy, and something you can stand to listen to on repeat for hours on end while you play the game. That's a narrow subset of world music.
Some of my happiest childhood memories involved video games, and in particular Japanese games with very samba soundtracks. So thank you, Brazil, de coração.

This is one of my favorite songs of all time. If you look at the Portuguese translation or the English lyrics what Jobim wrote, it is an amazing insight in a long reflection on life. Marco, March is the fall of Brazil, and so is so much like a "September Song" or like Sinatra's "It was a very good year" in a life reflection in the autumn of both the world around one and the life of someone. Somehow, not sad, filled with joy, and yet also full of experience and reflection of a life well lived, but with knowledge that more good is ahead.

Been listening to Aguas for 30 years now.
How do I know this is a beautiful song? Just like all beautiful songs out there - every time you listen to it, you feel like you've heard it for the first time and your jaw dropped...
The genius of A. C. Jobim and the angel that Elis was: the electricity between the two, the pure unadulterated joy of seeing them enjoying singing, the joviality of the song - the ingredients of the most beautiful 3 minutes. If this doesn't make your day tons better, you have serious problems...

There are certain things in life that are divine and privileged and yet right there for anyone to experience and this video is one of those rare, rare, things. It doesn't matter that the camera work drives you crazy, nor that they are only dubbing rather than recording live. If you doubt that look closely at Jobim. At moments he starts singing before his mouth opens and vice versa nor does his voice fade in and out when he pivots away from the mike. So they are making this video to the famous and universally beloved recording of this song that they made together and that everyone knows and loves. So what? It is a treasure to be thankful for. What a great song. ENGLISH LYRICS HERE:
    A stick, a stone,
It's the end of the road,
It's the rest of a stump,
    It's a little alone
    It's a sliver of glass,
It is life, it's the sun,
It is night, it is death,
    It's a trap, it's a gun
    The oak when it blooms,
    A fox in the brush,
    A knot in the wood,
    The song of a thrush
    The wood of the wind,
    A cliff, a fall,
    A scratch, a lump,
    It is nothing at all
    It's the wind blowing free,
It's the end of the slope,
    It's a beam, it's a void,
    It's a hunch, it's a hope
    And the river bank talks
    of the waters of March,
It's the end of the strain,
    The joy in your heart
    The foot, the ground,
    The flesh and the bone,
    The beat of the road,
    A slingshot's stone
    A fish, a flash,
    A silvery glow,
    A fight, a bet,
    The range of a bow
    The bed of the well,
    The end of the line,
    The dismay in the face,
    It's a loss, it's a find
    A spear, a spike,
    A point, a nail,
    A drip, a drop,
    The end of the tale
    A truckload of bricks
    in the soft morning light,
    The shot of a gun
in the dead of the night
    A mile, a must,
    A thrust, a bump,
    It's a girl, it's a rhyme,
    It's a cold, it's the mumps
    The plan of the house,
    The body in bed,
And the car that got stuck,
It's the mud, it's the mud
    Afloat, adrift,
    A flight, a wing,
    A hawk, a quail,
    The promise of spring
    And the riverbank talks
    of the waters of March,
    It's the promise of life
It's the joy in your heart
    A stick, a stone,
It's the end of the road
It's the rest of a stump,
    It's a little alone
    A snake, a stick,
It is John, it is Joe,
It's a thorn in your hand
and a cut in your toe
    A point, a grain,
    A bee, a bite,
    A blink, a buzzard,
    A sudden stroke of night
    A pin, a needle,
    A sting, a pain,
    A snail, a riddle,
    A wasp, a stain
    A pass in the mountains,
    A horse and a mule,
    In the distance the shelves
    rode three shadows of blue
    And the riverbank talks
    of the waters of March,
    It's the promise of life
in your heart, in your heart
    A stick, a stone,
    The end of the road,
    The rest of a stump,
    A lonesome road
    A sliver of glass,
    A life, the sun,
    A knife, a death,
    The end of the run
    And the riverbank talks
    of the waters of March,
It's the end of all strain,
It's the joy in your heart.

Waters of March - English translation
      A stick, a stone,
its the end of the road,
      It’s what’s left of a stump,
      It’s a little alone
      It’s a sliver of glass,
It is life, it’s the sun,
It is night, it is death,
      It’s a snare, it’s a gun
      It’s the blossoming field,
      It’s the candlelight’s blush,
It’s the knot in the wood,
it’s the song of the thrush
It’s the wood of the wind,
It’s the cliff and the fall,
      It is Mystery’s depths,
      It is nothing at all
      It’s the wind blowing free,
It’s the crest of the slope,
      It’s a beam, it’s a bay,
it’s the thrill at the top.
      It’s the rain raining down,
it’s a wild flood of talk,
      as March waters dissolve
all the cares of the heart.
      The foot, the ground,
      it’s the heavy walk home,
it’s the bird in the hand,
      it’s the slingshot’s fresh stone.
It’s a bird in the sky,
It’s a bird in the wood,
      It’s a stream, it’s a spring,
      it’s a morsel of food.
It’s the base of a well,
it’s the end of the line,
      the dismay on a face,
      it’s a loss, it’s a find.
      It’s a spear, it’s a spike
      it’s a tale, it’s a bill,
      it’s a tip, it’s a top, a drop
      dripping at will.
      A fish, a flash,
      a silvery glow,
      it’s the fresh morning light,
it’s the spring of a bow
      It’s a truckload of wood,
it’s the pain of the bite
      it’s cachaça drunk straight
on the street in the night
It’s the plan of the house,
      it’s a body in bed,
it’s the car that got stuck,
it’s the mud, it’s the mud!
      A step, a bridge,
      a frog and a child,
      it’s the landscape alive
      in the fresh morning light
      And the waters of March
      put the summer to sleep
      with the promise of life
that the heart gets to keep.
      It’s a snake, it’s a stick,
it is John, it is Joe,
it’s a thorn in the hand,
it’s a cut to the toe.
      And the waters of March
      put the summer to sleep
      with the promise of life
that the heart gets to keep.
      A stick, a stone,
its the end of the road,
      It’s what’s left of a stump,
      It’s a little alone
      A step, a bridge,
      a frog and a child
      It’s a lovely horizon,
      it’s a fever gone wild
      And the waters of March
      put the summer to sleep,
      with the promise of life
that the heart gets to keep.
      -Pau, -Edra, -Im, -Inho
      -Aco, -Idro, -Ida, -Ol
      And the waters of March
      put the summer to sleep,
      with the promise of life
that the heart gets to keep.

each time i hear it i feel profoundly changed but i cannot truly put it in words. i don't understand most of what they sing cos i only know tiny amounts of Portuguese and Spanish and studied Latin a long time ago.
but it doesn't matter because each time i invent my own little lyrical version in my head... based on the title, of course... the way you feel in the spring, the way your attitude changes toward women, the way everything seems to come alive around, everything smells diffferent.
i wish i could express myself better but that's about it

I would like to expand the lyrics explanation. It was composed when Tom Jobim was building his country house nearby RIo de Janeiro (as I´ve heard once in a interview of his partners). If you check the images of lyrics you will note mentions to scenes of the country and things related to building a house. As "festa do comeeira" when the roof is ready and, so, you can live there.... anyway, great moment......
