I love this interview. The female interviewer has so much energy and excitement that she is really interviewing David Lynch. Her questions around the abstract theories of his work made me think of a modern day English literature scholar interviewing Shakespeare and how he would possibly respond to similar questions. I have been watching interview after interview of David Lynch and I really believe he is a sincere artist. The other night I fell asleep while watching a lecture and I had an amazing lucid dream where I was talking to David and I told him about Swedenborg who was a mystic from Sweden in the 1700s. I also have explored Buddhism and some Hindu masters. Although I knew and saw many of his works I feel he really cares about humanity.
This is a special interview :) bravo. David Lynch is a tough guest and I think you got him to open up quite generously. Nice touch shooting through the window too, when he was talking about people being defined by how they treat others and going through life hiding all of their torment underneath the facade I couldn't help but stare out at those passersby. Sonder really crept up on me just gazing at that guy in the black sunglasses just dordeling around outside or the constant stream of people on the pedestrian crossing.
One of the wonderful perks of loving Lynch and his work on a molecular level, is that you get to watch interviewers and Q&A audience members (who've been "educated" in film criticism/theory) get shut down hard when they express their incessant and baffling need to inject politics and messages (both conscious and unconscious, of course) into Lynch's work, when he is truly, clearly, one of the most apolitical artists civilization has ever seen. There are certainly great artists where such readings might apply (the astonishing Spike Lee comes to mind), but to read "texts" as if their worth primarily comes from whatever ulterior motives lie below the surface is just exhausting, and so very reductive. The idea that every human act must have a political component is one of the most toxic beliefs I can think of. My soul lifts a little every time I see artists like Lynch shut that shit down. I don't know how he's dealt with it for so long.
Well said. Lynch includes plenty of postmodern tropes and methods in his work, but he does it because it *feels* right, he doesn't do it because he studied this stuff for 20 years and thinks he's qualified to wield such abilities. (In this way, a Zach Snyder is basically the anti-Lynch: not deconstruction, but destruction.) After years of amateur studying of postmodern writings in a variety of disciplines (I came to it from the sciences and philosophy of science, but I also love postmodern literature and came to it that way too), I've come to the conclusion that the primary innovation of postmodern thought is identifying the ubiquity of power structures and hierarchies in human societies. I wholeheartedly agree with this. I also agree that, if you burrow down into such structures, you will ultimately find that they are a fiction that humans have created. But you know what I also think? I also think that such power structures and hierarchies are often *a good thing* , and that their fictional origins are *necessary* for civilization. Some are not, of course, but some are. I'd go as far as to claim that the very ability of us to make "vertical" judgments of any sort (aesthetic and moral, for instance) rests upon a foundational, primal cognitive capacity to conceptualize, consider, and create hierarchies. "I put this above/below that," etc. It has long struck me that, if most artists approached their work and form in the same ways that critics approach them, art would no longer exist. (Well, to be exact, *good* art would no longer exist.) Which, by the way, is fine: Creation != Criticism. I'm a pluralist, I think it takes all kinds of people to make our world work. But when critics actively try and force artists to think like they (the critics) do as well? That's when I get angry. Because it speaks to a profound solipsism that masquerades as societal concern. Last thing: I should note that overall, I really like this interviewer. She asks great questions. But the ones that pertain to what I wrote above just drive me up a wall and make me cringe hard. And yet she is by no means the worst example of this, which is scary.
I love how Kubrick loves David Lynch work so much that Shining was influenced by Eraserhead, but at the same time David Lynch loves Kubrick too. It's reciprocal love. It shows how you can go crazy for a person's work and looking at it as some of the highest forms of art, but it doesn't mean that you can't be at that level too
David Lynch in beloved Georgia is like a magic wedding. But finally this great little interview shows that it all comes from somewhere else. But I am not surprised that a woman from Georgia made this great interview!
Never seen so many positive comments about an interviewer before. But don't you just love David Lynch. The guy is an icon. I loved Twin Peaks as a kid, but sadly haven't seen anything else by him. I came to this because of my interest in TM. What I can see is how TM underlies everything he is and does. It's so beautiful to be part of this special process.

It has evolved into a very complex, amorphous term as it's been adopted by other realms of intellectual inquiry, but I think it's unfair to label it 'pretentious'. Its association with science, philosophy, and history is helpful to provide a distinction between Enlightenment ideas of objectivity, rationality, etc with structuralism, post-structuralism, relivatism, and irony. We are everything and everything is us. There is no external reality. I still find the terms pretentious, outside the academic field where they may help people categorise different historic periods. Essentially I find the term nonsense, modern means the latest thing. So post modern would imply something not yet here. However, it actually refers to a period long gone. It's confusing and nonsensical. But no doubt students accept these terms blindly without much thought then regurgitate them.

if David had to intellectualize every concept, he'd never make. follow your gut/your dreams. dreams come unprompted and contain thoughts that create their own fabric/logic. maybe later you make a diagnosis as a shrink does, but mostly in the moment, you feel through the dark creatively
Interviewer wants David to be a social justice warrior. Lynch isn't having it. Lynch reveals human nature and what's beneath it. A true artist. She wants him to get political and have ulterior motives. Lynch isn't having it. Lynch, like Herzog, don't do irony. My favorite Lynch interview.
Nothing comes from nowhere. Like dreams being a collation of waking experience, an idea is a feeling, and you don't just catch a fish, but also the water in which it swims. And you shouldn't cook a kid or lamb in the milk of its mother.
I don’t get it... everybody is raving about the interviewer (!) Really??? Her energy is way up there, she intellectualizes way too much... in a nutshell: to me, she COMPLETELY misses Lynch the artist.
Why doesn't she understand David just doesn't want to be put in a box or labeled or put words into his mouth which are not true to his actual thoughts?? I understand why he's tired now
It is indeed quite troubling to watch when the creator gets told what his art is all about...and all these random bubble theories what is behind them. It must feel great to themselves to make those up, but it's almost getting near to this fine line between comedy and sadness...David is very upfront and kind about this, which is admirable.

if David had to intellectualize every concept, he'd never make. follow your gut/your dreams. dreams come unprompted and contain thoughts that create their own fabric/logic. maybe later you make a diagnosis as a shrink does, but mostly in the moment, you feel through the dark creatively

It is indeed quite troubling to watch when the creator gets told what his art is all about...and all these random bubble theories what is behind them. It must feel great to themselves to make those up, but it's almost getting near to this fine line between comedy and sadness...David is very upfront and kind about this, which is admirable.
