  • The Dominican Republic is building a border wall to stop undocumented migrants entering from neighbouring Haiti.
    It says it wants to prevent weapons and drug smuggling.
    But rights groups say the wall will not keep desperate Haitians out.

    The lovely thing about the situation in Haiti is that the whole world watches, KNOW the reason, but decide to not really do anything about it. Even Haitian’s who are proud and nationalistic about their country want change but don’t know how to go about it. It’s a tall task but DR can’t be the solution to Haiti. DR is flooded with corruption and mismanagement of resources and can’t handle Haiti’s woes.

    • @ocean6462
      @ocean6462 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes I agree with most of what you said that the other countries aren't doing enough in aid and DR can only take in so many immigrants but it can definitely take in more Hatian immigrants than it is currently. You acknowledge that the line between Haiti and DR is just an arbitrary dilineation (I assume) as a result of conflict or compromise between the more powerful Spanish and Haitians. By the same token though, every country should be taking more immigrants. I'm not advocating for open borders, I'm just pointing it out and support allowing more immigration in general

    • @theinternetsavedmylife
      @theinternetsavedmylife ปีที่แล้ว +34

      @@ocean6462 DR cannot afford to take in Haitian migrants. It's not a rich country. Haitian refugees already pose a major risk to DR and yet they're allowed to trade in border markets to provide for their families. What more do you want? Do you think the downward pressure on wages is good for the Dominican economy? Do you think ex-gang members flooding into a country that has its own corruption problems is advisable? Please only rich countries can afford altruistic and paternalistic behaviors as the ones you've mentioned. This wall should have gone up a long time ago.

    • @ReydelCiguay
      @ReydelCiguay ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@ocean6462 I wouldn’t say border lines are arbitrary. Humans have always had divisions of their territory to defend and protect from outsiders. We can look at the division between Portugal and Spain for example, a lot of shared history but they are also very different. The same for Same with DR and Haiti. The thing is DR is reaching its tipping point with Haitian immigrants. A country’s education, healthcare, and resources should go to first and foremost the people of that country. What we seen with DR is 80% of patients in hospitals being pregnant Haitian women, and most schools focusing on the education of Haitian immigrants at the cost of their own citizens, that’s going to bring resentment. Even more when you add that the UN tries to point fingers at DR like the racist ones, yet none lift a finger to help Haiti. You can see places like Chile, Mexico and even the Bahamas with its majority black population don’t want to deal with Haitian immigrants and deport them. Haiti’s problems won’t go away just by everyone taking a few thousand immigrants. Haiti needs order.

      1. Haiti became the world's first black-led republic and the first independent Caribbean state when it threw off French colonial control and slavery in the early 19th century. But independence came at a crippling cost.
      The United States also did not want the Haitian revolution to reach the blacks in the states, which is why they put long-term sanctions on it until they sank the country's economy.
      Now my question is….
      Should we blame the Dominican Republic for Haitians' misery? Or
      Should we blame France or US?

    I have a problem with your inaccurate reporting. The Haitian man said in Spanish “it’s a single island” while explaining why the wall won’t stop them. Bad translation on your part.
    That’s very important to translate correctly because he’s basically expressing a common Haitian sentiment whereby they don’t recognize Dominican sovereignty. They see it as their entire island because they had occupied the DR for 22 years and want to invade again.

    • @recklessralphfromqueens8383
      @recklessralphfromqueens8383 ปีที่แล้ว

      Incorrect a little... Haitians don’t want to occupy the country militarily. They know they’re nowhere close to as capable as when the country was first formed. The impossibility of keeping Haitians out that he speaks of is accurately based on the facts that even before the wall; Dominicans have always had steady control of the border with frequent deportations yet Haitians are always present chiefly by way of corrupt Dominican border authorities who are incentivized to smuggle Haitians in, the agricultural sector that has been dependent on cheap labor courtesy of starving Haitians since practically forever, and the logistical challenge of How many Haitians- MANY Haitians are crossing the border vs the man power of Dominicans patrolling. Yes, many have a sense of entitlement to being on the other side but you left out that Dominicans exploit it 24/7. The translation is on point.

There’s absolutely no way for you to certify if the translation was on point. I’m just simply putting that (what the Haitian said directly for you and I to hear), the translotor’s relay together with what I know, and dare to assume you know as well. Dominican business owners, the soldiers patrolling the border, virtually every sector of the Dominican economy face incentives to not be so patriotic or ethical. Let a Haitian pull up to Jimani or Dajabon w/stack of pesos or dollars especially - it’s a wrap. He/she will be around for months unscathed. They’re a major factor of how so many Haitians are drawn to crossing the border on top their desperation, self entitled disrespect for Dominican sovereignty, whatever. The headcount of deported Haitians hauled back into Haiti on a weekly is MASSIVE. Yet the presence of Haitians in the DR is only continuing to grow. We’re not even going to factor the exodus of Dominicans leaving to PR or Mainland US. Once you do that you’ll see whether the dude is speaking nefarious or not, it’s a legit point in practical terms . That’s where my confidence in the translator comes from.

You flee to a better life somewhere where they will take you in . For a while thats been The Dominican Republic. But The DR cant save nor bring in everybody . The DR is a poor country with its own problems . And overloading it with immigrants seeking asylum isn’t contributing to the DR’s prosperity and growth . The DR isn’t america wether it comes to monetary or military strength means . So that being said the best way to combat the mass migration is to put a barrier In between the two nations so that theres only one port of entry the safe legal way . That can sort out who’s coming and going in . The DR also has a law that states just because you are born here doesn’t mean your automatically a dominican citizen . Only if one of your parents is atleast a dominican citizen . But people interpret it for being racist when in reality its not its just seen that way because Haitian are 98% genetically black but it all has to do with your parents ancestral background ties to the country .so no Malek its not hypocritical its the only logical solution to an aging problem.

    Most people in the DR want to be perceived as white; unfortunately, Haiti is too close for comfort because the Haitians, with their black uniformity, reminded them of their DNA. Thus fueling their hatred, they fear that Haitians will darken their country. Years ago, when Haiti was exporting coffee and other stuff, the Haitian economy was good, and the DR economy took a plunge because of cooperative business. There were lots of Dominicans working in Haiti. Even some Dominican women involved in the old trade were treated exceptionally well in Haiti. Now, things are reversed. Haitians are under gangs and political oppression. They look to their neighbor for help, and the DR, instead of helping, is involved in practice violating their human rights. Shame on the DR.

    • @thedollpretty91

      It really saddens me that there is people like you spreading these lies. Haitians receive FREE health care services in the DR, they get jobs, they get housing... THERE ARE MILLIONS of them living in the DR - SO YES, WE ARE HELPING, WE DID HELP. There are Dominicans as dark as Haitians that live peacefully here. Almost everyone here has a member in their family with different skin colors; from the lightest shade to the darkest, and we live perfectly fine. There is racism EVERYWHERE, so of course there is racism in the DR. But for you to comment as if a whole country is racist because we're building a wall and are trying to protect our country from the gang violence in Haiti and illegal immigration, it's just unfair. We've helped Haiti a lot throughout the years, we're one of the countries that has helped them the most.
      We have the right to protect our borders and to focus our resources on our people instead. We don't owe Haiti anything, we are not so developed to be able to take care of a country that it's in ruins.
      Stop living in the past and looking to blame others for your problems. Start fighting for your side, so it can recover, I can feel the hatred towards the DR that you feel without any reason at all. If you're Haitian, fight for your country on your side!
