As a Dominican, many people have asked me why the island isn't united and my response to that is because Dominicans and Haitians differ from one another in many aspects such as, culturally, religiously, ethnically, Economically, language, etc. We are as different as how Spain is from France. Saying the Spanish "invaded" the island after Dominican independence is maybe half-true. Spain was actually invited to come back by some of the Dominican elite, landowner class, including the president. So they came back with the support of a portion of the population under an understanding that Santo Domingo would not be treated like a colony, but as a part of Spain. Spain wasn't even sure they wanted to take Santo Domingo back, though they eventually did. Well, that turned out not to work that way the two parties expected. Most small-farmer Dominicans were never happy with the situation, and eventually the ones who invited the Spaniards back also grew dissatisfied with the situation when they realized they got a rawer deal than they expected. There were pockets of resistance since the beginning of Spain's return, but the actual war kicked off in 1863 and lasted about a year and a half until Spain's losses grew too high, taking casualties in combat but also losing a much larger portion of their forces on the island to disease. At that point, the U.S. Civil War was ending, so it was an extra incentive for Spain to leave that the U.S. would again be capable of enforcing its Monroe Doctrine.
Would you like it if your country was occupied because the landowners and the president asked? Mind you, this is not the US; in colonies of exploration, land was commonly given to the nobles. So these people were mostly Spanish, by birth or parents. "Land owner" is not someone who owns a little house in a city, it's people who own plantation land, and these people are the richest people, the elite. Just so you have an idea of how these lands were divided, in 1500, Brazil would have been the 8th largest country in the world (it expanded west and is currently the 5th) and Portugal divided it among just 16 people! So, no half-truths, without a popular vote or at least a popular congress vote, it's an invasion.
Granted, 1500 was much earlier, but this system was in place in some form in Brazil until 1821. And frankly, if you take a car and drive between major Brazilian cities and pay attention to the agricultural lands, things haven't changed that much, either. New tech, new crops, a few new people, but overwhelmingly the same family names. So I'm not very impressed with the idea of "landowners" being a large group of people.

The island has to stay devided because we are two completely different nations. Two completely different people. We have ablsolutely nothing in common. What Haitians need to do is grow their economy and educational infrastructure. They need to change their government. They need to create opportunities in their own country so as not to depend on the dominican republic for their well being. As a dominican i have nothing against the haitian people; i just wish some of them would get the absurd idea of unification out of their heads. That is never going to happen. Nobody in the dominican republic wants that, but at the same time we want to see the haitian people do well for themselves in their own land and amongst themselves. 1:30 fun fact, if you're wondering what hell did polish do in haiti since they never had any significant colonies it's actually quite interesting story. Since the third partitioning of Poland, the polish state was no more and from this point onward polish people will try everything to bring back Poland as an independent state. Then some time later Napoleon happened and he conveniently has prussia and austria as enemies and is also spreading nationalistic ideals around europe so poles were on board. Napoleon let polish create their legions under his rule in Italy and from that point onward they would fight under emperor's commands. After establishing a duchy of Warsaw, Napoleon had nothing to do with polish soldiers (grossly oversimplifying) so he sent them along with french soldiers to suppress haitian revolution. However many polish soldiers felt bad fighting independence movement while they were participating in their own. Long story short, many of them sided with haitians and helped in the revolution. After that a bond was formed between those soldiers and haitians to the point that Haiti's first head of state Jean-Jacques Dessalines called Polish people "the White Negroes of Europe". That's why polish were cool. To this day descendants of polish people live in haiti.

My very English last name comes from my grandfather on my Dad's side who was English, Scottish and some other things (my grandmother on my Mom's side is also ethnically British, for lack of a better term)

Good video, but as a Dominican I don't like the fact that people don't mention "Las Devastaciones de Osorio" (1605 - 1606), which prohibited people from living in the part of the island that we now know as Haiti. Since that part of the island was abandoned, pirates occupated it, and so the start of two different cultures began. From the beginning we were 2 different "nations" and that's fine.
It can be resume like that because the period of occupation where not so long, for example France was in charge of the Spanish side for like 14 years, Haiti for 22 years and the American for 12 years one time and a year the other time. In comparison Spain was in charge of the Dominican republic for more than 300 years and Dominican republic has be independent for more than 160 year ( I take away the years of American occupation and the Spanish annexation)
@@japa2129 I totally get what you're saying. I teach high school French and Spanish in South Florida. I see lots of Haitian students that would be confused by the video. It would have been nicer if things were slowed down a bit in the video. I'll use it as a resource but I'll need to put it in bite size chunks. At the same time I have to be very credible because it may clash with things they may recollect from the oral accounts they hear at home. People don't trust you if you appear to more know more about their culture and history than they do, it's totally understandable.

I think the title is a bit misleading to people who don't really know the history about the island. It's more accurate to have it be "Why did the island of Hispanionla split?" Haiti and DR were never one country out of choice, since before the French there was no Haiti, only the land that would later become Haiti because of France's colony there. After the French left and DR gained independence from Spain, the Haitians invaded and occupied DR, not a friendly union. EDIT: Careful going into the thread, I have now learned that the history of this island can be as complicated and sort of hostile to talk about as Balkan history.. Discretion is advised.

Great job summarizing the topic in about 3 minutes, and thought it's totally understandable that you had to simplify everything, here's 3 key points I wanted to shed some more light on for those who are not familiar with our history. 1) Initially, the french portion wasn't given to them by the Spanish simply because of some wars fought in europe, you have to consider that great part of the claim from France was because french pirates lived and traded goods in the left portion of the island. Illegally settled there while the island was under Spanish rule, it was the consequences of the "Devastations of Osorio" (pretty interesting topic imo, look it up) 2) when Spain took back control of the spanish-speaking part (already the Dominican Republic by then) in 1861, it wasn't an invasion. The country was basically "sold" to Spain by the then president (a dictator by today's standards) Pedro Santana, against the will of the people. 3) this one is controversial and reflects the rivalry between Hatians and Dominicans: the reasons and intentions of the 1822-1844 Hatian occupation of the Spanish-speaking side. Look, I'm not gonna say whether who's right or wrong, just gonna state the two sides: one side says that the reason Boyer took control of the spanish-speaking side was to continue the liberation of african slaves on that part of the island; the other side says that this is false since, although technically never abolished before, slavery was already non-existent by then and that the occupation was really an invasion over the richer east part of the island and that once they took control of it, they raised taxes in order to pay their debt of independence to France. There is more to both sides but I think that is the core of the arguments. You are free to choose to believe either one, look up the sources yourself, you'll find plenty backing up both sides. I want to clarify that with these I'm not attempting to justify anything, just sharing some information for history nerds like me out there. If you have different angles of these topics I mentioned, please share it with the rest of us, though please do so in a respectful manner. I'm not here to argue with anyone, but to learn.

I agree with the first commenter, i used to believe that Santana simply sold out the DR as well, but he, along with Duarte, Sanchez y Mella, was one of men who freed the Spaniards of the island from the Haitians. He was at the time just as much as a hero and as respected as Duarte. The problem was that amongst the Dominicans one side (Duarte) believed that we could be a free and independent nation while the other side (Santana) didn't believe that we could survive as an independent nation because we were basically half an island, with a small population, lots of poverty, had a huge threat Haiti next to us and another huge threat which was the United States. I'm glad Santana and his followers were proven wrong but it was a huge risk back in those days.
Also huge kudos for mentioning Osorio, if Spain had not messed up the western part of the island, Dominican Republic or La Española would've never been split into two nations and DR probably wouldn't have as many problems as we have today.

Another thing, I think that the name of the country would have been simply Santo Domingo, since the name before was Capitania General de Santo Domingo and during the annexation it was Provincia de Santo Domingo, the use of Hispaniola was never very popular among the Spanish even when It was the name that Columbus himself gave to the island.

Also, Spain didn’t reinvade us, we let them in because the Dominican Republic at the time did not see itself as a fully functional state and believed it required a overlord nation to protect it. Piracy, the island of tortuga was a piracy hub and as such the Spanish avoided that side of the island leaving it open for French arrival. You don't have to go overthink it, look at Austro-hungary, they were all whites but the spoke different languages and had different a different culture and we know what happened, now imagine that, but more different and clearly defined borders. The explanation is WAY too superficial and full of misinformation. DR and Haiti were never a same nation or share same origins. There are absolutely no cultural, linguistic, religious or ethnic similarities! Haiti was a french colony composed of imported slaves, not slaved inhabitants. The most exploited colony of all, to the point that they were the richest french colony and were even forced to pay the frenchs the debt for independence till modern times (around the 1950's). DR was a spanish colony composed of exploited inhabitants, african slaves and european settlers. The germans and frech or the mexican and americans have more things in common than DR and Haiti. They are literally two different worlds which meet in a landmass.

The Dominican Republic declared independence from SPAIN in 1821 and only two months later it was INVADED by Haiti for 22 years. Haitians and Dominicans have NEVER been the same people or the same country.
This history is incorrect, after the revolution and independence in1803, the entire island became Hayti. What people need to understand is that Dominicans are trying to create a history which they don’t have. In 1795 after the treaty of Basel, The Spanish ceded the rest of the island to France which put the entire island under the rule of Toussaint Louverture for France until 1801 when the French arrested him. From 1801 to 1803 there was battle for independent between the Haytian and the French while the entire island was under the French as Saint Domingue. In late 1803 to 1804 Hayti proclaimed their independence of the entire island. There are four constitutions providing proof that the Dominican Republic did not exist until 1844, and technically if a country does not exist, it cannot be controlled, invaded or occupied by another. These constitutions and the treaty of Basel 1795 are the proof that Dominican Republic is a fraud and a lie, and the land belong to the Haytian. After the treaty of Basel, the French and the Spanish asked all Spanish descendant to either move to Cuba, Columbia or any other Spanish colony in the Americas. Some of those Spanish descendent who had a life on the island decided to stay live along side the French, and those Spanish which were a minority are the one claimed that the side of the land clled Dominican Republic today belong to their father.

After watching it, I regret to tell you that I consider this video shallow and even offensive to both DR and Haiti. Maybe you don't realize it, but the way the history is narrated reveals that your only sources were American historians who a lot of the time fail to capture nuances and that will look at it as if the US was at the center of it all. LOL... here's a thing...they never really have possession. In short, the Spanish were supposed to leave within one year of the handover to France. They never did and it wasn't until Toussaint Louverture occupied the eastern part of the island and forced the issue that the French nominally had control. But in mainland France Louverture actions were not approved and they sent an army to take him out. That's why after Haiti declared independence you see the French still occupying the eastern side of the island, which ended in 1809 when locals rebelled and kick them out and re-established Spanish control.
Keep in mind that the local population rebelled against France and decided to join back to Spain in 1808 until 1821. The only reason why the spanish gave Hispaniola to the french was because they were expecting to eventually get it back, which they eventually did.

As a Dominican, many people have asked me why the island isn't united and my response to that is because Dominicans and Haitians differ from one another in many aspects such as, culturally, religiously, ethnically, Economically, language, etc. We are as different as how Spain is from France. I think the clearest difference between the two nations can be seen at the border of the 2 countries.

Saying the Spanish "invaded" the island after Dominican independence is maybe half-true. Spain was actually invited to come back by some of the Dominican elite, landowner class, including the president. So they came back with the support of a portion of the population under an understanding that Santo Domingo would not be treated like a colony, but as a part of Spain. Spain wasn't even sure they wanted to take Santo Domingo back, though they eventually did. Well, that turned out not to work that way the two parties expected. Most small-farmer Dominicans were never happy with the situation, and eventually the ones who invited the Spaniards back also grew dissatisfied with the situation when they realized they got a rawer deal than they expected. There were pockets of resistance since the beginning of Spain's return, but the actual war kicked off in 1863 and lasted about a year and a half until Spain's losses grew too high, taking casualties in combat but also losing a much larger portion of their forces on the island to disease. At that point, the U.S. Civil War was ending, so it was an extra incentive for Spain to leave that the U.S. would again be capable of enforcing its Monroe Doctrine.
Would you like it if your country was occupied because the landowners and the president asked? Mind you, this is not the US; in colonies of exploration, land was commonly given to the nobles. So these people were mostly Spanish, by birth or parents. "Land owner" is not someone who owns a little house in a city, it's people who own plantation land, and these people are the richest people, the elite.
Just so you have an idea of how these lands were divided, in 1500, Brazil would have been the 8th largest country in the world (it expanded west and is currently the 5th) and Portugal divided it among just 16 people!
So, no half-truths, without a popular vote or at least a popular congress vote, it's an invasion.
Granted, 1500 was much earlier, but this system was in place in some form in Brazil until 1821. And frankly, if you take a car and drive between major Brazilian cities and pay attention to the agricultural lands, things haven't changed that much, either. New tech, new crops, a few new people, but overwhelmingly the same family names. So I'm not very impressed with the idea of "landowners" being a large group of people.

The island has to stay devided because we are two completely different nations. Two completely different people. We have ablsolutely nothing in common. What Haitians need to do is grow their economy and educational infrastructure. They need to change their government. They need to create opportunities in their own country so as not to depend on the dominican republic for their well being. As a dominican i have nothing against the haitian people; i just wish some of them would get the absurd idea of unification out of their heads. That is never going to happen. Nobody in the dominican republic wants that, but at the same time we want to see the haitian people do well for themselves in their own land and amongst themselves. They need to treat each other better in order to prosper as a nation. They are not our countries responsibility.

The DR has a had a Haitian migrant crisis which creates over population and less resources available for Dominicans in their own land. Dominican students don’t have seats in schools because they’re being occupied by ilegal Haitians. Imagine not having a spot for your child in your own country because it’s being occupied by an illegal foreigner that’s just the tip of the iceberg they also take the jobs like construction away from Dominicans as well in their own country.

1:30 fun fact, if you're wondering what hell did polish do in haiti since they never had any significant colonies it's actually quite interesting story. Since the third partitioning of Poland, the polish state was no more and from this point onward polish people will try everything to bring back Poland as an independent state. Then some time later Napoleon happened and he conveniently has prussia and austria as enemies and is also spreading nationalistic ideals around europe so poles were on board. Napoleon let polish create their legions under his rule in Italy and from that point onward they would fight under emperor's commands. After establishing a duchy of Warsaw, Napoleon had nothing to do with polish soldiers (grossly oversimplifying) so he sent them along with french soldiers to suppress haitian revolution. However many polish soldiers felt bad fighting independence movement while they were participating in their own. Long story short, many of them sided with haitians and helped in the revolution. After that a bond was formed between those soldiers and haitians to the point that Haiti's first head of state Jean-Jacques Dessalines called Polish people "the White Negroes of Europe". That's why polish were cool. To this day descendants of polish people live in haiti.

Good video, but as a Dominican I don't like the fact that people don't mention "Las Devastaciones de Osorio" (1605 - 1606), which prohibited people from living in the part of the island that we now know as Haiti. Since that part of the island was abandoned, pirates occupated it, and so the start of two different cultures began. From the beginning we were 2 different "nations" and that's fine.

It can be resume like that because the period of occupation where not so long, for example France was in charge of the Spanish side for like 14 years, Haiti for 22 years and the American for 12 years one time and a year the other time. In comparison Spain was in charge of the Dominican republic for more than 300 years and Dominican republic has be independent for more than 160 year ( I take away the years of American occupation and the Spanish annexation)
@@japa2129 I totally get what you're saying. I teach high school French and Spanish in South Florida. I see lots of Haitian students that would be confused by the video. It would have been nicer if things were slowed down a bit in the video. I'll use it as a resource but I'll need to put it in bite size chunks.
At the same time I have to be very credible because it may clash with things they may recollect from the oral accounts they hear at home. People don't trust you if you appear to more know more about their culture and history than they do, it's totally understandable.

I think the title is a bit misleading to people who don't really know the history about the island. It's more accurate to have it be "Why did the island of Hispanionla split?" Haiti and DR were never one country out of choice, since before the French there was no Haiti, only the land that would later become Haiti because of France's colony there. After the French left and DR gained independence from Spain, the Haitians invaded and occupied DR, not a friendly union.

Great job summarizing the topic in about 3 minutes, and thought it's totally understandable that you had to simplify everything, here's 3 key points I wanted to shed some more light on for those who are not familiar with our history.
1) Initially, the french portion wasn't given to them by the Spanish simply because of some wars fought in europe, you have to consider that great part of the claim from France was because french pirates lived and traded goods in the left portion of the island. Illegally settled there while the island was under Spanish rule, it was the consequences of the "Devastations of Osorio" (pretty interesting topic imo, look it up)
2) when Spain took back control of the spanish-speaking part (already the Dominican Republic by then) in 1861, it wasn't an invasion. The country was basically "sold" to Spain by the then president (a dictator by today's standards) Pedro Santana, against the will of the people.
3) this one is controversial and reflects the rivalry between Hatians and Dominicans: the reasons and intentions of the 1822-1844 Hatian occupation of the Spanish-speaking side. Look, I'm not gonna say whether who's right or wrong, just gonna state the two sides: one side says that the reason Boyer took control of the spanish-speaking side was to continue the liberation of african slaves on that part of the island; the other side says that this is false since, although technically never abolished before, slavery was already non-existent by then and that the occupation was really an invasion over the richer east part of the island and that once they took control of it, they raised taxes in order to pay their debt of independence to France. There is more to both sides but I think that is the core of the arguments. You are free to choose to believe either one, look up the sources yourself, you'll find plenty backing up both sides.
I want to clarify that with these I'm not attempting to justify anything, just sharing some information for history nerds like me out there. If you have different angles of these topics I mentioned, please share it with the rest of us, though please do so in a respectful manner. I'm not here to argue with anyone, but to learn.

I agree with the first commenter, i used to believe that Santana simply sold out the DR as well, but he, along with Duarte, Sanchez y Mella, was one of men who freed the Spaniards of the island from the Haitians. He was at the time just as much as a hero and as respected as Duarte.
The problem was that amongst the Dominicans one side (Duarte) believed that we could be a free and independent nation while the other side (Santana) didn't believe that we could survive as an independent nation because we were basically half an island, with a small population, lots of poverty, had a huge threat Haiti next to us and another huge threat which was the United States.
I'm glad Santana and his followers were proven wrong but it was a huge risk back in those days.
Also huge kudos for mentioning Osorio, if Spain had not messed up the western part of the island, Dominican Republic or La Española would've never been split into two nations and DR probably wouldn't have as many problems as we have today.
@@kevinfromsales9445 Certainly we would have been better, that was the beginning of many of the evils that we are experiencing now, and I also believe that even the fall of Cuba into the hands of communism and the theft of PR by the US would have been avoided, the Caribbean would have been very different and more harmonious. But hey, there's not much we can do right now. Another thing, I think that the name of the country would have been simply Santo Domingo, since the name before was Capitania General de Santo Domingo and during the annexation it was Provincia de Santo Domingo, the use of Hispaniola was never very popular among the Spanish even when It was the name that Columbus himself gave to the island.

Most Dominicans aren't aware of this but DR and Latin America has never really been independent, because as soon as the United States got the declaration of restricting Europe of not messing with the former colonies it was now so only the US could "influence" the former colonies of Latin America.
Puerto Rico, Panama, Mexico, Colombia, Cuba and Dominican Republic all come to mind.
Also, Spain didn’t reinvade us, we let them in because the Dominican Republic at the time did not see itself as a fully functional state and believed it required a overlord nation to protect it. However the Spanish saw this as a means to simply put a colonial state over us instead of actually treating us like a sister state or a child for instance. Hence the War of Restoration.

It was already destroyed after the Napoleonic Wars and repartitioned to Austria, Prussia, and Russia because of the Congress of Vienna.

The explanation is WAY too superficial and full of misinformation. DR and Haiti were never a same nation or share same origins. There are absolutely no cultural, linguistic, religious or ethnic similarities! Haiti was a french colony composed of imported slaves, not slaved inhabitants. The most exploited colony of all, to the point that they were the richest french colony and were even forced to pay the frenchs the debt for independence till modern times (around the 1950's). DR was a spanish colony composed of exploited inhabitants, african slaves and european settlers. The germans and frech or the mexican and americans have more things in common than DR and Haiti. They are literally two different worlds which meet in a landmass.

The Dominican Republic declared independence from SPAIN in 1821 and only two months later it was INVADED by Haiti for 22 years. Haitians and Dominicans have NEVER been the same people or the same country.
This history is incorrect, after the revolution and independence in1803, the entire island became Hayti. What people need to understand is that Dominicans are trying to create a history which they don’t have. In 1795 after the treaty of Basel, The Spanish ceded the rest of the island to France which put the entire island under the rule of Toussaint Louverture for France until 1801 when the French arrested him. From 1801 to 1803 there was battle for independent between the Haytian and the French while the entire island was under the French as Saint Domingue. In late 1803 to 1804 Hayti proclaimed their independence of the entire island. There are four constitutions providing proof that the Dominican Republic did not exist until 1844, and technically if a country does not exist, it cannot be controlled, invaded or occupied by another.
These constitutions and the treaty of Basel 1795 are the proof that Dominican Republic is a fraud and a lie, and the land belong to the Haytian. After the treaty of Basel, the French and the Spanish asked all Spanish descendant to either move to Cuba, Columbia or any other Spanish colony in the Americas. Some of those Spanish descendent who had a life on the island decided to stay live along side the French, and those Spanish which were a minority are the one claimed that the side of the land clled Dominican Republic today belong to their father.

After the death of the emperor in 1806 the island was split horizontally by King Henry and the assassin called Alexandre Petion. After the death of King Henry in 1820, Boyer reunited the whole island again as it was already stated as Hayti from the constitutions. I'm thinking that the switch from 10 minute to 3 minute videos has to do in part with how long it takes to make them. With the shorter format we get a new video almost every week. With the longer ones, only about once a month at best. Taking a brief look at small quirky points of history, and trying to catch all of the visual references being made, is a niche no one else is doing.

Great video as always but Spain didn't invade Hispaniola in 1861. The political elite of Dominican Republic were afraid that Haiti would invade and had many problems sustaining the economy so they had the not so brilliant idea of returning the island back to spain.

Most of the antihaitianism Dominicans have comes from the fear felt by the whites and mixed people during the Hatian revolution and also during the invasion, the constant threat of a big and powerful army overpowering us. Even if Haiti is no what it was nowadays, the feelings the Dominicans had exist today. Still the biggest source of nationalism in DR.
We have always been invaded by Haitians, either by force or passively (like now). Multiple times we have had to reshape our frontier because of the passive invasion of Haitians. People dont see the threat because Haiti is in crisis, but if it were strong as DR, it would definitely try to conquer land from us, claiming that it has more haitians than Dominicans.

As a Dominican, I was curious to see your take on a historical fact that has condition DR for centuries. After watching it, I regret to tell you that I consider this video shallow and even offensive to both DR and Haiti. Maybe you don't realize it, but the way the history is narrated reveals that your only sources were American historians who a lot of the time fail to capture nuances and that will look at it as if the US was at the center of it all. I will invite you to look for the work of Mr Frank Moya Pons, or Mr Bernardo Vega. A for effort.

I'm surprised, after taking possession of the whole island, France didn't change Hispaniola's name to "Franciola."
LOL... here's a thing...they never really have possession. In short, the Spanish were supposed to leave within one year of the handover to France. They never did and it wasn't until Toussaint Louverture occupied the eastern part of the island and forced the issue that the French nominally had control. But in mainland France Louverture actions were not approved and they sent an army to take him out. That's why after Haiti declared independence you see the French still occupying the eastern side of the island, which ended in 1809 when locals rebelled and kick them out and re-established Spanish control.
France only had control of the whole island for nine years
Keep in mind that the local population rebelled against France and decided to join back to Spain in 1808 until 1821. The only reason why the spanish gave Hispaniola to the french was because they were expecting to eventually get it back, which they eventually did.
