Not just a musician, but a legend. Got statues and streetnames in Ireland. Great loss (as so often) at a very young age. A reactor Roy Murray said: didn't get enough recognition. Another example of an underrated musician: Roy Buchanan !
I agree about everything except that Rory didn't die "at a very young age". He was 47 years old when he died in 1995. Of course, too early but not young.
Sorry, mate, but whoever said that was just looking for a cheap sound-bite. Rory was born in Donegal, brought up in Cork, but never stopped touring Ireland, North and South, during the dark days of The Troubles. So in one respect, whoever made that statement wasn't wrong, in the sense that music fans didn't give a crap which part of the island he came from or what Church he was dragged along to as a kid. But to say he was the ONLY man? That's just hyperbole. I'll give you two examples, although I could go on... try Stiff Little Fingers... Belfast punk band, formed in 1977, revered and promoted by the late, great John Peel, lived in a city torn apart by sectarianism, but reacted against it, as did their fans. I'll also give you a sporting legend who brought the people together: Barry McGuigan, the Clones Cyclone. (That's pronounced Cloh-ness, by the way, for those who might think his nickname made him some sort of android). World Champion Featherweight from a small town just south of the border. I was in a sporting club in the heart of what could be called Protestant East Belfast the night he won the world championship. The place was going mental. Some things transcend politics and bigotry, and the best examples are often from music or sport. So yes, Rory played his part, no doubt, but there's a long list... 👍
Shadowplay,1979, 10 minute of pure amazing rock and roll and his solo and stage antics are amazing. A pure virtuoso and electric, spanish, classical,12 string, ,mandolin. Pure artistry.
@padfolio Yes that's good. Everything Rory did was. But IMO the best performance of "I Wonder Who" is his performance in Vienna August 18,1978 under Rory Gallagher Archives on YT so give it a watch & enjoy!
NO ONE is better than Rory. He never gave a bad performance. He is also a fantastic acoustic blues man. His original songs run the gamut from witty to gritty to thought provoking. EVERYTHING he played was infused with energy, imagination and amazing technique. In Ireland he is considered a national treasure---literally.
@@michaeldonaghey I once heard someone from Ireland refer to Van Morrison as "Belfast's surliest Son". But yeah, Gary - solo and with Thin Lizzy, Van and Rory are artists that get cranked whenever they hit the speakers - every single time! And even though I'm old, I still crank the Cranberries. And I know there are many others.
The best thing about a Rory gig was that the encores could go on longer than the show! I saw him 5 times including Reading 1980, and they were the best shows ever. Always left completely burned out!
That battered 61 strat most of the varnish peeled of from sweat sounds like heavens harp or Satans battle axe in the hands of the Greatest of them all Rory G
Fantastic...but by no means Rory's "best". Gallagher to me is the greatest guitarist ever. Saw him back in 1985, Loudest assault on my eardrums ever. Great that you reacted to him. Please do some more!
I saw him in a small venue in Denver. He LOVED playing. He loved us for coming and appreciating him. The only other performer I ever saw who gave as much as him was Janis.
The sheer energy of this performance is a joy to behold, 5mins of headbangin' heaven and guitar greatness that really should be heard at full volume preferably whilst driving with a car full of people all digging it. Like in Wayne's World with Bohemian Rhapsody. Planet of Women by ZZ TOP also has this effect on me.
Careful now .. you have opened the door of Legends. Rory Gallagher was a hero of a guitarist, song writer, vocalist and artist. There are more ... you will find them soon !
Greetings from Ireland your reaction right at the start was so cool it was like wow where did that come from Rory from a standstill to full flight in seconds!!!! I still get goosebumps from the energy in a packed out Ulster Hall right from the first riff. Rory was such a humble guy ,you could meet him walking down the street and he had the time of day for you. Check out the film Irish Tour 74 it's amazing!!
"Rory Gallagher is one of the best Rock/Blues guitarists the world has never heard of." A quote from maybe the Best to ever pick up a guitar himself, Jimi Hendrix on Rory Gallagher. The two met way back in 1967 in England in a small Dive Bar, when Jimi had just come over from America, to form his new Band,"The Jimi Hendrix Experience," with Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding. Jimi and Rory had a very similar style, (raw and gritty) and I think they felt a sort of "kinship" with each other. Rory truly, wasn't in it for the fame and fortune, he loved playing small venues in an intimate setting, so he could give his fans the best experience possible. I'd put him at #2 or #3 respectfully behind Jimi, Johnny Winter. Stevie Ray Vaughn is certainly in the mix somewhere. Rory is a fantastic guitarist.
So lucky to have seen Rory - the most incredible guitarist EVER! So dynamic live..totally mesmerising.. no-one can hold a candle to him imo. Wish he was still here making his awesome music. Best of all, he always makes me happy just listening to him. Still, after all these years, so deeply missed. There will NEVER be anyone like him..
As far as I know, the story goes like this: a reporter asked Jimmy Hendrix how did it feel being the best guitar player in the world. Jimmy responded: I don't know. Ask Rory Gallagher. This made me think that probably no guitar player wants to be the best, or they accept that someone else is better. In any case, they were 2 sacred monsters with a guitar, and most definitely gone too soon. Love your reactions, always so intense and legitimate. Kinds regards and lots of love to you all. Stay safe, we need you here. 👏👏👏👏
I mean this is the story that I tell that I heard from my friend who heard it from his father who heard it somewhere. But I have no idea is it really true or not because I have never seen any written articles / the actual video of this thing being said but it's also all over the TH-cam comments so I guess it's a well known story. But true or not, Rory will always be the best guitarist ever in my book.

First time I saw Rory, Isle of Wight 1970 - best festival ever. Also Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Jethro Tull, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and too many others to mention. Changed my life forever.
Before reaction really took off, I continually spammed it with Rory tracks, and prog rock, so good to see you young generations getting into it all over again. My generation had the Beatles, Rory, zeppelin, prog rock we were so honoured, we thought it would always be like this, it’s great it’s not gone. I saw a lot of them live. Like heavenly experiences. Really.
Try and find a live version of “Bullfrog Blues” or the live Wiesbaden performance of “Shinkicker”. So full of energy and sheer enjoyment! First saw Rory live with his band Taste in 1969, then at the Isle of Wight Festival, then many more times in the 70s and 80s. Fantastic player and a really nice guy too.
There's a great video of Joe Bonamassa playing Rory's guitar (yes, this exact one) during "Sloe Gin" live at the Royal Albert Hall several years ago. Rory's brother Donal met with Joe before the concert and offered to let Joe play it and the rest is history. BTW, the guitar looks like it's been through a war but still sounds EPIC! Do yourself a favor and check it out. Cheers.
I think it is risky to certify something like ''Best live performance'', so as a fan of Rory since 1972 ... I am 63 years old .. I would like to suggest that you watch the concert at Hammersmith Odeon in 1977. There is this video here on You Tube.
One thing is for shure RORY was only in it for the music and the fun, NEVER for the money. There are good Guitar players, there are great guitar players and then there is Rory Gallagher. Nobody ever had more fun doing it than Rory.
No doubt
The best ever.
Rory is one of the greatest guitarists of all time. He doesn't get enough recognition 🎸🤘
I agree 100%
5000% i loooove Rory Gallagher!!
Amen to that. Rory is my #1 of all time.
Saw him live 2x hope he has his own stage in the afterlife, I will be in the Mosh pit, Jay in one hand pint of bitter in the other

Rory the BEST EVER. My oldest Son named for him. Most underrated guitar player. He is a gift from Ireland that just kept on giving.😅❤❤❤❤❤❤
"Tattood Lady" and "Moon Child" are my Rory favorites.
Is that called the Chuck Berry Duck Walk, the one leg thing I mean?
Rory was called the only man who could get Catholics & Protestants in the same room.
