The live version of this off of Irish Tour '74 is spectacular. Experiencing his live music is a must, I think he is one of those performers that is even better live. Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple said Rory Gallagher was probably the most natural player he ever saw, and that he was the ultimate performer. As for this song, I have made this comment before. I lost my wife suddenly and tragically several years ago, and those first few months, going out to eat alone, sitting at the bar, I felt exactly how it is expressed in this song. It is as if Rory wrote this song for me all those years ago. The fact that Rob and Amber like Rory confirms their sophisticated taste in music.
Had the pleasure of seeing Rory 3 times in the 80’s just fantastic. One of the first albums my sister bought was then live in Europe LP, back in The 70’s. I have tattooed lady album. Plus others of his and finally got Irish tour DVD and CD a few years ago. Love how You Tube and various recordings / video footage is bringing him to so many new people. Good music is always good even if the player has passed.
Both Rory and Alvin Lee said that they basically play a song the way they feel at the time they are playing it and not the same way over and over again. Both musicians really looked like when playing the guitar was like being in they their own world because they were just that connected to their craft
Rory has been my hero since 1973. Tattoo, Against the Grain and his first solo album made up the soundtrack of my three 18 year old friends and I, on our one month trip through the burning hot European summer of 76. I've always sensed he was different. Not a "guitar hero", not a guitar playing machine, not competing for the fastest guitar player that's ever lived; just a guy living, playing the blues. This feeling was reinforced when meeting him a few times further in my life. He was one the sweetest, most sensisitive, sympathetic individual I've ever met. Thanks for acknowledging his works while getting more people to discover them.
One of the idols of my teenage years. He played guitar, harmonica and sax, although he put sax aside after his first recordings. He could play slide guitar like hell! And always showed his devotion for old blues and old blues musicians. The energy of his live performances was astonishing
I grew up listening to Rory & Jimi and a host of other greats thanks to my Dad (RIP). I still have his copy of Rory Gallagher Irish Tour 74 LP and that version of A Million Miles away is phenomenal, you definately need to listen to it. Rorys studio albums are classics but his live performances are other worldly, that one, in my humble opinion being his greatest
Live versions of Rory’s songs are the way to appreciate this genius! For blues try Catfish for rock try Sinner Boy from the Isle of Wight festival with his band Taste. For his early solo work (with just guitar, bass and drums) try Bullfrog Blues or In Your Town. I was lucky enough to see Rory twice with Taste and about twenty times over the next ten years before moving to the far west of England. This man was a unique performer - folk, jazz, rock, blues - he could do them all and brilliantly too. A real rabbit hole to go down, but it’s worth it (in spades!!)
(50 year anniversary of being a Rory fan for me last year) Time keeps on ticking... Going through a box of old ticket stubs not long ago. I was blessed. My first rock concert: May 19, 1973 (lol yeah, I'm old, but still above the dirt...) East Tennessee State University Rory Gallagher ZZ Top $4 It was about two months before Tres Hombres came out. (Dusty Hill's 24th birthday, I came to find out on his passing) It was Festival Seating and I managed to get about 15 feet from mic center. Rory Gallagher was pure fire right out of the gate, and his band was phenomenal. (particularly Lou Martin on his electric piano) Rory was amazing to see play and I think that he had as much fun as anyone. Then, Billy Gibbons and the boys came out. When I was about 16, I had a Saturday job on a market stall and the other workers invited me along to see Rory in Manchester, I’d assumed he was an Irish folk singer…! I had a pleasant surprise! 😂
I love the way you guys "get" Rory's music. That track was recorded over 50 yrs ago. Please please listen to this advice: you just gotta react to the BBC Old Grey Whistle Test video of Rory and his band playing "Bullfrog Blues". It is by far the best Rory piece on youtube. I guarantee you will LOVE it
Brian May of Queen is a big fan of Rory's work. He went to a show of Rory's before Queen were famous, met Rory after the show. Asked him what his guitar set up was, and based his own early set up on that.
Great reaction, and no, you can't put Rory in a box, well said Amber! 'm so glad you've discovered Rory, please keep going. The 'horns' you were hearing was Rory on Saxophone. Please listen to the live version from the Irish Tour 74 album, even if you don't react to it (no sax, but a stunning performance). Rory's studio work was excellent, but you really have to see him play live. I'd recommend for starters Bullfrog Blues and All Around Man from The Old Grey Whistle Test 1976, Calling Card - Hammersmith 1977, Do You Read Me - Rock Goes To College 1979, and I Wonder Who (a Muddy Waters cover) - Belfast 1984. Oh and Rag Mama Rag from Rockpalast 1976, Rory having a blast on acoustic! Jay, if you're planning to visit Ireland there is a Rory Gallagher Festival held every year in his birthplace, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal (it has pubs), usually around the beginning of June. His brother, Donal, has recently made the decision to sell Rory's stuff off at auction, including his famed 1961 Stratocaster guitar, which is expected to go for £1 Million+ They is a current drive for the Irish government to buy the collection, to keep it in Ireland and display it so that everybody can see it.

He has Van Morrison vibes too. There was a huge irish influx into Australia when it was first settled by europeans and many people can trace their roots back to the emerald isle. I was over in Egypt many years ago now and the tour guide was looking for us all when we landed. She walked into the lrish pub, looked around and smiled. "I might have known I would find you all here," she said. Irish, scots, english, welsh pubs.... a great place to relax and soothe the soul. In the early days Melbourne was full of pubs in the same tradition.

He had a band called Taste that looked as if it was going to evolve into another Cream but Rory decided that was not his scene or ambition, then he was contacted by the Stones who were recording in Asia and loved his guitar skills, but again Rory told his brother, his manager, that it was too ambitious for a simple guitar player who just loved the blues. And so, Rory put together a small group and played what he loved and never wanted for more than his talent. He had but one electric guitar his whole career and one acoustic guitar if I remember. I owned a couple of record stores in the 60's and late 70's on the West Coast US and I sold so many walk ins on this blues guitar savant that they probably had never heard of. A lot of people bought his music from me back then. And, now I am in Bangkok, cowering in the shadows of whet Trump might do to my people. Love your show.

Rory Gallagher is great, and is really at his best live, but this is a rare occasion where I prefer the album version to the live one, so glad you played this song and this version, which is the one that first got me into Rory.
you should see him live in particular; that was his forte, especially when Rocking-out, even his bandmates where amazed, and they themselves were no slouches, Roddy as a person so self effacing and normal - like a guy you might meet down the pub. Hendrix said he was the best.
Guys!!! Next Rory song? For a upbeat rocker do his song Shin kicker, then for awesome guitar riffs do his song Brute Force and Ignorance. Also if you want a Getty Lee vibe hit up Mott the Hooples album Mott,Drive on. Any song off of it you will dig.

When you go to Ireland, go to Callahans in Cork City for a bit of Rory praise.
Check out Walk On Hot Coals and Bullfrog Blues live on The Old Grey Whistle Test.
So good live..😊
If you're going to put Ireland on your bucket list, go to the annual Rory Gallagher Festival in Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal. But book early... you're not the only ones who revere the great man...
he is awesome..... glad you are finding him......
I recommend you guys checking out "shadow play" by Rory Gallagher, the live one
Rory's 1961 strat which he bought in 1963 for £100 is going up for auction in Oct 2024 at Bonham's London, estimate £700k to £1m.
Now listen to the live version on the Irish Tour 1974 album. You don’t have to review it for the channel, just treat yourselves. You will not be disappointed.
Rory Gallagher is great, and is really at his best live, but this is a rare occasion where I prefer the album version to the live one, so glad you played this song and this version, which is the one that first got me into Rory.
Same. This is the first Rory song I ever heard and it was the intro that caught my ear.
✌️🤟🤘
The great Irish Rocker is such a treat to listen to.
You have to give " Irish Tour 74 " By this Legend , a blast ! A fantastic double Album !
you should see him live in particular; that was his forte, especially when Rocking-out, even his bandmates where amazed, and they themselves were no slouches, Roddy as a person so self effacing and normal - like a guy you might meet down the pub. Hendrix said he was the best.
Just a myth about Hendrix saying that.
That's also Rory playing the sax
Thanks guys! You gotta get into the live footage.
A Dallas-arbiter Rangemaster treble booster into a cranked Vox AC30 = tonal bliss.
This was truly wonderful.
Talent in abundance nae auto pitch or digital manipulation just man, instrument and raw unadulterated brilliance
Love Rory he is awesome 👏
Not as AWESOME AS the Lord Jesus Christ ,
Yes. More Rory. Never got his due in the U.S. Check out Bullfrog Blues and Walk On Hot Coals.
It's Rory on alto sax.
Have To Play Two Tracks From His Album Live In Europe...
Messin With Kid And In Your Town Rory At His Incredible Best
🎸😎🎸
Another you might want to give a listen to I’d Roy Buchanan. Southern blues guitar legend.
Also listen to Taste who were Rory’s band before going solo and the music energy was there Listen to “ Blister on the Moon “
❤ Thank you!
Somebody once ask Jimi Hendrix what it was like being the greatest guitarist in the world his reply was “ I don’t know ask Rory Gallagher”
Guys!!! Next Rory song? For a upbeat rocker do his song Shin kicker, then for awesome guitar riffs do his song Brute Force and Ignorance. Also if you want a Getty Lee vibe hit up Mott the Hooples album Mott,Drive on. Any song off of it you will dig.
anything from "Irish Tour 1974" you can't go wrong
Please react to Rory live, it is a whole different experience. Great reaction
ENJOY, YA'LL!! Such a GREAT JAM!! :) HUGS!
So glad to see you checking out Rory, best live act I have ever experienced!
love this so much, he tells a story, takes you to anohter time and place, it is transcendental!
great to see you both really vibing from this! Rory doing his thing!
J and Amber, if you enjoyed these Rory tunes, you will love “ I fall apart” and especially “do you read me”. Rory has an endless amount of musical treasure out there. Mississippi Sheiks and used to be are incredible !!
Remember going to buy that album when it first came out…where have those years gone?
Edged in Blue : The best intro Ever
