Regarding #1 and #6. I'm Finnish. I hear exactly the same arguments from my neighbours in the east, but they don't pretend to be the stewards of democracy. "We know things are wrong, but choose to do nothing about it" isn't anything to be proud of. And if you come into my country, I expect you to be able to at least acknowledge that failure.

Concerning football: In 1876 American universities switched from playing with football style rules to playing with rugby style rules and forgot to rename. So "American football" is a misnomer and it should be called American Rugby

@@ChristopherLRussellbut thats the problem. Nobody wants to change moralically and especially the US doesnt want to, even though they have much more to revisit than other countries, always having wanted to be unique and consciously separated themselves from the rest of the world, surpressing minorities, calling words differently without knowing the origins of the words, and claiming to have an authentic culture (food, traditions, architectorial, knowledge), while destroying every form of culture, which had established over time. And I guess, thats the main reason, why many dont think positively about the US😅 even though the people are propably even nicer❤

You do realize that the land area of Europe is slightly larger than that of the USA?
    Europe -> Area: 10,523,000 km² - Population: 746 million (2020) - Time zones 5
    USA: Area: 9,525,067 km² - Population: 334 million (2023) - Time zones 5
Many Americans equate the size of Europe with that of the EU out of ignorance. Don't make the same mistake

    • @ChristopherLRussell
      @ChristopherLRussell  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

You might have missed the context. I think the person that actually said that (wasn't me), was speaking on the idea that a lot of Europeans think that Americans don't even see their own country in full, where as any given European can see THEIR country in full because it pales in comparison. The US (as a country) vs any individual European country.
But keep in mind, I got this list of things online. They are not mine.
Also, I don't make these videos as a testament of how knowledgeable I am on geography. Honestly I don't care about trivial things like this. They just make for good video topics.

Back in the place I was born, the nearest town is 20 minutes away and it's shittier than my hometown. Canada is about 4 hrs drive. The point, land mass being what it is. The concentration of cities and villages seem to be closer in contrast. Then there are the oceans. I for one m glad it's too expensive to fly to Europe from the US. 😉

It's called "Scheißhaus", and I expect all Americans to learn it.
And Europeans actually can grasp how big the U.S. are. Because we travel. To me it rather seems, that Americans can't grasp, how big (and diverse) the rest of the world is, especially compared to the U.S..
About the school shootings: Imagine someone banging his head against the wall, over and over again, and then complaining about headaches. And whenever you tell him, that - if he'd stop banging his head against the wall, the headache would go away, but if he won't stop, he has no right to complain about the headache, he tells you, he can't stop, because his right to bang his head against the wall is in the constitution and that there's also no connection between that banging and the headache, then there's just no other way to deal with such a level of stupidity and denial of proven causality. And btw.: School shootings are just what makes it into the news. And crime of course. But what about the insane numbers of gun related accidents? There comes a point, when no one is buying it anymore, when you tell them, it doesn't happen on purpose.

Very interesting take. A good basis for discussions, but with some underlying misconceptions. One thing, which is regularly overlooked by our american friends is, that the cultural influx from the USA into Europe is way more significant than the other way around. Like with every medal, there are two sides. And I think, we Europeans have good reasons to be critical to some of the American developments, which sometimes swap over to the continent without appreciation. The most critical, of course, is the comparatively high level of violence in the USA. And the reason for that are by a far extend, based in social inequalities. We've been fighting against that for generations. It was a long way from the times of the Manchester capitalism to the modern welfare states, causing plenty of victims. And we're proud of it. So, having political parties and tycoons in the US with more accumulated wealth than some smaller European nations, who openly hate these achievements we're on alert. And I do not think, that this is disrepectful to the victims. As we follow these incidents with high empathy, we just do not want that over here.

Some valid points that should be said and I read some of them myself in some comment sections. Comment sections are a good and a bad example when we want to learn how people think. Good for unfiltered opinions, because people think they don’t have to behave like humans, because their own opinion is mandantory. But internet comment sections are not what all Americans or Europeans think of each other. I hope we still know, that the internet is not our real life. Yet. My personal experiences with Americans are always more important to me than what I read in random comments. As in every personal contact it is nice when we meet somebody, we can agree with and if we don’t agree: Great, perhaps we can learn something new. But being judgemental often is a lazy decision. I don’t fully agree with some of the points - but I appreciate different cultural backgrounds.

on 1) it depends, urban vs rural, straight roads vs serpentines, etc... the bigger issue is that just because you can drive automatic doesn't mean you can drive manual, while being able to drive manual means you're able to drive automatic
on 2) it kinda reinforces my point that the us is not democratic, since in a proper democracy the government should represent the people
on 3) there never was such a thing is "uncontrolled immigration"
on 4) it's football, cause you have a ball and you play with your feet... what the us is refering to is actually handegg. also, I don't give any fs about either

on 7) what kind of nutjob would drive 4k km if they can hop on a plane for €150...
on 8) not gonna touch that one :P
on 10) "don't mention x about us just because we mention y about you"... talk about thinskinned. if you don't want us to mention your flaws, don't use ours as a joke. also pointing back to #2 and #6.

      4) It's a language thing. In the US they speak US English, so they call it soccer. The English used over in Europe is mainly British English, so it's football there. Which version to use depends on who you're talking to. The only reason this topic even comes up is because both aren't really perceived as different languages. I do like to mix both, though, since it has the added benefit of irritating the exceptionalists on both sides of the pond :)
      10) When people argue about something they should stay on topic. Switching the topic like that they're just trying to "gain an advantage." Instead of trying to find common ground in a discussion they try to "win." It's bullshit.

I always reply, yeah, but it's in a language I am not fluent in, so I can ignore it. Immigration here has two negative facets in my experience as an immigrant: The immigrant's lack of desire to integrate and the lack of employees at the Ausländeramt. In the past, a *well-driven* manual transmission was more powerful and more fuel efficient. Automatic transmission technology surpassed that mark decades ago. Manual transmission is no longer more efficient, and manual shifting places more strain on the engine (manual transmissions last longer, but the *engines on automatics last longer).
Which means - the basic thing that some Americans (not this one :) ) find attractive about a manual transmission is the illusion of greater control, and the illusion that they are driving 'better'. Which pretty much sums up more situations than just cars.

  • @samiraperi467

Automatic vs manual is very much a matter of taste and situation. I'll drive an automatic if I have to, but my brain is wired for manual so auto requires extra concentration. The lack of a clutch pedal is a handicap, and the brake pedal being twice as wide in an auto screws up my reflexes.

Optimism is a great thing, if you are in a situation with little hope. For example, think about women in Afghanistan. For them being hopeful is necessary. It is good, so they do not give up.
But the USA, the mightiest and most rich country, they being just optimistic is terrible. They claim to be the leader of the free world. Not some small country which just managed to start a school system, that could help regular families out of forcing their children to work when they get 6 years old.
Think about a flight. What do you want the pilot to be? An optimist, who is sure everything will be fine, or a pessimist who thinks about of the dangers and double checks everything so that nothing goes wrong?
Also, no one (at least from people who I know that say US-americans are uncultured) says this because they never left the USA. To be interested in other cultures does not need to visit their countries. But what even is US-american culture? Mainly the take aspects from other cultures around the world and turn them into a form diluted so much, that these globuli thinks are similar and then use it to make much money with. If someone wants to make money with foreign culture, thats okay, but pay these cultures some respect.
If you do not care about other cultures, develop an own culture, which is more than just "USA great, rest of the world stupid" and just money, money, money. If you someone is interested in other cultures, maybe try to learn their language. Most germans know a second language, even though we dub any show and translate nearly every literature into german. Especially in the modern times, If I want to learn lets say swedish, I do not have to visit sweden, to practise. I can find swedish people on the internet and talk with them in their language.
I also wonder why US-children spend 12 years of school to then start in college as a freshmen. The fist 3 semesters are often just stuff most europeans already learned, if they had 12 years of school. And some 'muricans then claim, they have to know more, because a bachelors degree in germany takes only 3 years.

So lets see what I'm not ready to hear as a European... I just wonder who created that list of rants.
#1: That's not an issue at all as tech advanced over time. The first automatic transmissions were horrible, but thats a thing of the past. I drive both, manual and automatic but I prefer automatic as well.
#2: We have similar issues in our countries as well. They are just not so publicly visible. However, I don't understand why people in the States believe the lies they are told and continue to follow the liars when the facts simply reflect a different reality. I sometimes just miss the use of common sense.
#3: Yeah, it's a fact. But it's a double sided sword. As long as those immigrants are willing to integrate and being honest, I don't have a problem. But there are many who try to misuse our hospitality, destroy our cultural values etc. And of course other countries who are using immigration to destabilize our society.
#4: Just count the amount of worldwide viewers in world championships for both kinds of sport and then think again whats obviously more popular.
#5: You (mostly) get what you pay for. However you call it, it's a shitty place. But its hilarious to call it a bathroom or restroom at public places. I neither want to take a shower or nap in this room.
#6: I clearly distinguish between the people and your government.
#7: I know those differences, just wonder whats the point you're trying to make.
#8: Don't want to discuss this topic here as it would need an own discussion due to it's complexity.
#9: It's not about visiting, it's about openness to other world views, cultures etc. I think in average European people are more interested and also want and do know more about Americans in regards of history, geography, politics and culture than Americans about Europe.
#10: Its just a sad topic and horrifying to see the more and more increasing spiral of violence, IMHO caused by populism, hate, fear and the lobbyism behind. It makes me just sad for those affected in one or another way because it always turns out to be a lose-lose situation (besides those lobbyists in the background).
Bonus: To sum it up, I have been several times in the US and been in contact with Americans for private and business reasons. I think I've experienced it all, from them being very welcoming and friendly people to lot's of funny, sometimes hilarious incidents, to some times of misuse of power by authorities or even scary moments like looking into a gun pointed at me. Overall I like the American people and partly also their different thoughts and approaches of doing something. I think we both can learn from eachother to become better.

Automatic transmission is better than manual? Uhm, only for bad drivers and for ppl who are constantly stuck in city trafic having to constantly alternate between 1st and 2nd which can become tedious.
In all other cases manual is superior.
    Less fuel usage
You don't constantly end up in the wrong gear, which means you don't need a stronger engine to compensate for being in the wrong gear. It also allows you more control over acceleration as it won't shift into a higher gear and "nerf" your acceleration when you don't want it to.
You are more focussed on the road, because you are operating a machine and don't have a free hand to text or whatever. Also, you need to constantly asses what gear you need to shift into for upcoming corners/traffic etc (and if you drive an manual for a while, you will do this automatically, as automatically as you put food in your mouth with a fork instead of shoving it up your ear.)
It provides better control over the car. Both in braking, accelerating and cornering.
    Less maintenance.
    Cheaper in purchase
It's simply more fun for ppl who like driving a car. If you just want to cruise around, sure automatic is perfect for you, but for actual driving, there is no contest, manual wins every time.
There is a reason why most racing cars don't derp around with automatic gearboxes (sry dragracing isn't racing, it's just accelerating). Most use sequential gearboxes exactly because this allows you to get every last bit of speed out of the machine, which you will always do better than a computer. I drive a little 1L engined kia nowadays, and eventhough it has a small engine, it's surprisingly snappy. I've driven the automatic version of it aswel, that thing was simply terrible in every way, it would need at least a 1.6L engine to compensate for the automatic gearbox constantly shifting a gear too high.
Sry man, but automatic gearboxes are pretty terrible, easy? sure, but terrible nonetheless.
