  • There are 4 steps to really dialing in a rifle: pick a load, get the velocity, calculate the maximum point blank rang, and zero the rifle. So let's go through these steps on this rifle and you see if you think it's worth the effort?

    Glad that worked out for you in the end. I don't use factory ammunition at all ... I load for every cartridge i use and they have become a few over the years with things that one can't find on the shelves that easy these days. Like the 223WSSM , 458 SOCOM and others.

      I am not saying that my eyes didn't glaze over a few times 😉, but best results are worth noodling through. Another question, you kinda picked on your shooting table, it looked pretty good. All the tables I see are plastic like a cheap ironing board or made out of old railroad ties. I actually found your channel from you wood work videos. Enjoy them all

      Another reason the series is useful to me is because I am in California, and we have to use non-toxic projectiles. I have to re-jigger all my stuff after thirty years plus. Grrr

    Hi Tom,
    I have really enjoyed the journey you are on with this rifle. You have shown a great deal of patience in setting it up - a lesson to us all! Some hunting videos with it in the autumn would be great. Looking forward to that. 👍

    Tom,
    Thanks for the great explanation of your findings and your thoughts. I have shot enough 30 cal tips and measured with my radar to know those will shed about 200fps every 100 yards for the distances you are needing. The 150 maybe more as you explained. So say 400fps or maybe 500 at your max range. Will the bullet still expand at that speed? With the tips you are using I would expect so. Remember, Nosler says a min of 1800 for both the Accubond and Partion. Those are solid tips and I have experienced kills with those along with the ones you are shooting. In general, yours will open up nicely at slower speeds and still make clean kills. A 180gr Winchester is a hammer on whitetail especially when grouping so nicely and holding that good point blank range. Best Regards.

    So for me, Winchester was the best as it was the most accurate, but what I'm wondering is as you reload a pretty good bit, are you going to take that information and work up your own load that will be accurate and fast? I would not swear to it but I bet you can come up with hand loads that are better than any commercial load..enjoyed the video and have a great week...God Bless..

    • @travisweldmaster7815

      No factory load will ever be in the same ballpark as a custom rifle load tailored to that rifle, or even a just got to load say for any rifle of that clambering, the consistancy of brass, to charge cbot, ect...no comparison to factory loads to any competent handloader

    I would shoot some more groups and or try some different ammo. If im not mistaken you did a deep clean on that barrel might just need to build up some copper. If all stays the same. Accept the limits of the rifle and hunt according to its abilities. Keep it 200 and under if you go somewhere with a farther open shot bring the right tool for the job is basically what im getting at. If I know im 50 to 100 yards ill bring the 30 30 not the 7mm mag. I have a few other in between options but you get my point. She looks good. Id work on the build up of copper and a couple load options before finalizing the ammo type.

    The federal powershok just like the box you have with you are going for 100 or more here in florida where hornady superformance is the same price it's always been especially for a 7mm remington magnum it's gotten really ridiculous how prices are being gouged

    Hello Tom, I would be interested to see if you threw more lead down the barrel, if your highest velocity round starts to group any better. Hey “change on topic”, what ever happened with Your Win model 70 Sporter that had the bizarre & slow 24” barrel? Were you able to ever get the barrel up to 24” speed, and was there an accuracy issue with that one as well? Can’t remember where that video went.
    Best of luck with everything, God bless.

    • @TomRiverSimpleLiving
      @TomRiverSimpleLiving  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mike, more lead isn't going to help this one. Getting more shots in to increase velocity is for new barrels and this one is far from that. And a slow barrel is going to be slow with all loads. This one is typical of what you will see from pretty much any barrel and it was only the one load that was really slow and some loads are just going to be slower than others in a particular rifle. I could reshoot this in another rifle and the Winchester load might be the fastest, at least the fastest of the 180gr bullets? So I was very happy with this barrel. And all were slower than the advertised velocities but ammo is almost always slower than advertised. It's not an issue unless you see some really big variations from what it should be.
      As for the Westerner, I was planning on just shooting some more rounds through that one and just see what happens but with the price of ammo it might be cheaper to go ahead and just rebarrel it? I will put a few more rounds through it out of curiosity but I suspect I'm going to be doing a series on building a custom rifle before long with that action as the foundation? LOL

    • @repairfreak
      @repairfreak 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TomRiverSimpleLiving Hello Tom, you mentioned in above reply how ALL were slower than what the box states, therefore you must just have a slow barrel on this 303. However I thought every cartridge except for the one was doing very close to box specification. So Im a little confused at how you arrived at the thought the barrel is just a slow one. Maybe I missed something? I do find it strange that the higher velocity 3 cartridges had the worst spread. Guess this must be as you said before, some barrels just like some brand cartridges/bullets better than others, and your barrel just didn’t group as good with the highest velocity box of cartridges.
      I hope you get the Westerner re-barreled. I accidentally called it the Sporter, but I think that was the name of the newer model wood stocked Win 70’s with 24” barrels, however without iron sights like the good old Westerner.
      I also look forward to your rifle build video coming up.
      Have a great week Tom, God bless.

    Sad to hear the Remington ammo is so expensive and not available. With your background with this cartridge and the time, you have. Your rifle and some hand loads will likely make your rifle into an excellent shooting rifle before deer season. It is common rifles always shoot better with fire formed cases formed to the chamber of most all rifles.
    When I test for accuracy I take along a 22 rifle and warm up my shooting skills with one before I start shooing expensive centerfire ammo. 🙂

But I WOULD HIGHLY ADVISE FROM CALDWELL KIT. I've literally hated and all but lost my religion over mine its junk, and I'm absolutely not connected to any brand but I WONT be with Caldwell, not the green one with the led lights an all on the shades..seriously dont waste your money on the green one, I've seen a diffrent model with the rig facing down, idk about that one but stay away from the lil green one kit, I seriously would got the magnetospeed one, always where you point no lining it all up...or standard style like I said prochrono, just my experience and opinions

    Your Winchester ammo would still have over 1000 ft. lbs. at 345 yards. You'd have to hold quite high at that range though. If you are using it for a woods gun, with shots under 200, the Winchesters will fill the bill.
    If you are going to handload, you can use whichever bullet and powder/primer works best and likely increase your point blank range through custom loading.

    To me its ALL ABSOLUTELY a MUST for me to fine tune, loads, dope charts, zeroing, verify them, and shooting as far as the projectile will stabilize(basically) at as small a target as I can see, 600 and in isnt fun anymore, hunting is a different story far as the elr, long range, with my 7mag and 270 I have no problem bang flopping a deer at 4, 500 yrds, IF, ONLY IF I know I can nail it, far as environmental conditions
