People don't understand how big this was unless they were there at the time. It revolutionized how videos were made. Quincy Jones as producer started it rolling. Getting John Landis to direct and the legendary Vincent Price to do voiceover launched it even further. They actually released it on VHS along with a "making of" documentary and you could never find it in stock at a rental store.

Fun fact: Rick Baker (the effects and makeup artist for the video) had a cameo as the zombie opening the crypt.
This was just one of Baker's screen credits; for those who aren't familiar with his work, he's better known as the makeup and effects artist for An American Werewolf In London, both the 1976 and 1985 remakes of King Kong (and he played Kong in the 1976 version), Harry And The Hendersons, and two or three dozen more films.

Great video. It has an IMDB entry, with interesting info. The old house at the end of the video, is just down the street from the red house used for exterior shots on the TV show, Charmed. As a fan of Charmed, I drove by there once, years ago, when I was driving through Los Angeles. I took pics of the Charmed house, but not of the Thriller house, since, I didn't know until later, that it was used in this video. These houses are on Carroll Ave., in the Angelino Heights neighborhood, near Echo Park, just off of 101 freeway.

When I was little, Michael was my first love and my crush, and he still is to this day! I used to listen to him in the Jackson 5 when I was little, and now I'm rediscovering that music and his older music! I was away from him for a long time, but in 2022, I came back to his music after being away from him for many years and 13 years after he passed away, and let's just say I am never going to leave him ever again! The video for this song used to freak me out when I was little and I would scream every time Michael turned into the werewolf and the zombie come and I would be scared of Vincent Price's laugh, but my father told me who he was, and I got to see what Vincent was like as a person. I also saw the making of the thriller video, and they showed Michael in the makeup and all the different costumes, and once I saw that it was only Michael, I calmed down and the fears that I had experienced as a little girl went away and disappeared. Now the video is one of my favorites, and I'm starting to learn how to do the Thriller dance!

I never miss a chance to watch this video. It’s just so good-the music, the dancing, Vincent Price (NOBODY better), even the fat zombie-what a touch! As an artist, Michael Jackson is a true icon. His compositions, dancing and singing were extraordinary (I think I read somewhere that after that Motown special, Fred Astaire called to compliment him)
The reason he lost some steam had nothing to do with his music. It was all the real life stuff, like the kids accusing him (I’d had a little crush on him since he was a kid, and that ended at this point), the weirdness with Lisa Presley (all to do with $cientology, probably) and the other woman who had kids for him, dangling his baby off the balcony, etc. Add the last couple plastic surgeries that left him disfigured, and people lost interest in his videos.
Loved your scenes-the squeaks and cackles were awesome, and I totally agree that acting the part helps, especially if you’re going to sing to an American audience in a language other than English. Why don’t we expect our kids to learn other languages as the folks pretty much everywhere else in the world do?
Anyway, great reaction! For Giggles, why don’t you check out Marwan Ayman’s This is Halloween in 30 styles? (This isn’t the exact title, but you’ll find it easily). Marwan is still a teenager, but he’s incredibly gifted, and reminds me a little of MJ in that he has a real gift for arrangement and performing as well as singing.

It was the first. When it got nominated for an Oscar the Academy decided to change the requirements for the length of time of a short film. What helped was that he chose a famous movie director who had done horror movies. It also helped that a famous movie make-up artist was used.

You should definitely watch his long form video Ghosts. Its 39 minutes long and its considered the longest music video ever although id debate if its a music video, as it contains dialogue and multiple songs. Its technically a short film. Some call it the spiritual successor to Thriller in idea. You'd love it.

Love the intro. That's it no more dating services! Too hairy! Notice the references to I Was a Teenage Werewolf. Love the whole thing too. This is Jackson’s masterpiece, and he did a LOT of great stuff. One thing I really like about MJ songs is the use of the repetitive driving bass that gets you moving, a style pioneered by the Temptations in the 1960s. And I really LOVED your reaction and analysis.
I remember when you did those Mussorgsky and Humperdinck pieces. (And the silly critic who said you are not allowed to interpret music 🤣 ) It was a delight to see those bits.

Ola Ray was just so incredibly cute in this video! I remember feeling disappointed when I found out she wasn't actually Michael's girlfriend. I though they belonged together!
One other thing Maggie: You mentioned the acting and expressiveness that is often frowned upon in opera. I just recently watched Elizabeth Zharoff (The Charismatic Voice) performing Martern aller arten, and then I found a video from two years ago where she reacted to and analyzed her own performance. In the analysis Elizabeth made some mention of that physical expressiveness, so if you've not watched that video of her performance, I highly recommend it!

I LOVE almost 100% of the Michael Jackson's catalogue since the start of the 80's, I LOVED him when he was with The Jackson 5, and with The Jacksons, I have every album from him solo and with the bands, Michael Jackson have been a huge influence in my life, I always took his defense against all those lies that targeted him continuosly, but I hated "The Way You Make Me Feel", especially because of the videoclip, he wasn't dancing, he was actually harassing the girl and I hated that !!
I hate when he plays bad boys !

MJ was raised as a strict Jahovas' Witness and didn't believe in anything regarding the occult; that is why he made the statement at the beginning of the video, basically stating that this is a video and nothing he believed in. His religion was very important to him - this was just a video, nothing more.
I was in 7th grade and had 10 girls sleeping over waiting for this premiere. My poor dad took my brother somewhere for the night because we were screeching 13 and 14-year-olds! The boys had to get away!
It was a Friday night - perfect for a junior high sleepover. It had to be a nightmare for any boy - but I am so glad I grew up in the 80s because today, kids wouldn't be together - they would be on their phones - we had it so much better without technology - just waiting for MTV premiers! I still remember every dance move from this video, and it was 40 years ago. It was so 80s, and we are proud to be '80s kids', although we are grandparents today!!! Our grandchildren are beginning to discover this video and cannot figure out how GRANDMA knows the dance! 🤣 Grandma was 13 years old once, too! and we LOVED Michael!
My initials were also MJ; I had the denim jacket and heels she was wearing (we snuck them into school - our parents didn't allow us to wear them - but they are the 80s!), the infamous red jacket he wore, and everyone had a knockoff of it..... the '80s were MJ!!!! We miss him!!!!

A music video made when content and a story line were all important. Micheal does disavow any connection to the occult at the beginning of the video. But it is among his finest works. He had only to ask the legendary Vincent Price to do the voice over, he gladly accepted and said he had more fun helping Micheal make this video than he had had in years. He said in an interview that Micheal was a rare talent and working with him was a pleasure, unlike some in the industry.

Really appreciated what Michael did putting that disclaimer before Thriller began about his own personal faith based convictions. He is basically stating that "Hey this is for entertainment purposes only" and it doesn't reflect my own personal beliefs. It was no secret that he was a Jehovah's Witness. He never got enough credit for that and he should. It's something you just don't really see done anymore in entertainment.

I remember watching the world premiere of this video the first time it ever aired (yes, I'm old). It was on a broadcast TV show called Friday Night Videos. Many rural areas did not have easy access to cable at that time and they wanted as broad an audience as possible. They hyped up this video for weeks in advance and it was more than half the length of that 30-minute segment of Friday Night Videos.
Great to see someone enjoying this classic.
