Fasting helps us switch into a fat-burning mode that utilizes ketones instead of glucose. But, fasting also does more than change the physical body. It’s estimated that 30% of our thoughts are about our next meal. That’s a lot of time and energy wrapped up in food, and fasting can help us regain control of ourselves, our minds, and so much more.
Dave Asprey joined me on The Doctor's Farmacy to share some of his favorite hacks to increase ketone production, balance hunger hormones, and feed good gut bacteria to help us feel satiated and energized even while fasting.
Dave and I also talk about the topic of mitochondrial function, why it matters for healthy aging, and how fasting supports stronger mitochondria. We also look at why fasting is different for women than it is for men and how they can fast in a way that compliments their natural hormonal cycle.
Dave is the founder and Chairman of Bulletproof 360, a high-performance coffee and food company, and creator of the widely-popular Bulletproof Coffee. He is a three-time New York Times bestselling author, host of the Webby award-winning podcast Bulletproof Radio, and has been featured on the Today show, Fox News, Nightline, CNN, and dozens more. Over the last two decades Dave, the “Father of Biohacking”, has worked with world-renowned doctors, researchers, scientists, and global mavericks to uncover the latest, most innovative methods, techniques, and products for enhancing mental and physical performance.

My spouse developed type 2 and went into ketoacidosis and almost died. In ER his blood sugar was 1425 😳. Not a typo! Was in ICU for days. Came out on insulin metformin etc. I told him to forget everything the dietitian told him and put him in keto. Within 6 months was off all meds and his pcp was scratching her head and said she never had a msn come off diabetes meds in her 25 years practicing and asked how he did it. He said my wife put me on a keto diet. She took him off all meds including the Lipitor she had prescribed. He has maintained for 4 years using keto. I learned it from your book blood sugar solution when I developed type 2. 😉

I ordered Dave's twilight blue blockers. They are cheaply made, and not worth $89, imo. More like $20. In fact, I like the way my $20 pair fit me (I lost them, or I'd still be wearing them after 8 years). The packaging and box they came in were great though. AND here is where it goes unethical and slimy. The company offered me 30% off my next order for a good review. AND WAIT, THERE'S MORE, lol...there is no way to give anything but a great review, as they don't allow honest reviews because they screen them all. NOTHING WORSE than a company dishonest enough to pay for reviews. I buy most everything based on reviews. This should be illegal.

Amidst this crazy covid crap, so much isolation between vaccinated vs non-vaccinated people, I actually prefer being alone away from the toxicity of ignorance. On a side note, fasting has significantly reduced my menopausal symptoms and my body looks and feels as good, almost even better than it did in my 20s & 30s. And yes, we must honor our elders, how did we lose sight of this?

@jasmyne contours I can tell what bubble of news you’re in. If you heard something outside of that bubble would you be willing to believe it and then tell others? Or keep quiet because some facts aren’t accepted as truth in some groups. Be an outlier who knows facts without subscribing to a fear story.

I feel the same way you do. And on a side note...young people today don't want to "be friends" with older people. This is a very unusual phenomenon in American culture. Consequently, when you're older, you feel unseen. It's not as easy as this guest makes it sound when he proclaims you need to just "make friends with all ages". I'd also like to add, we need to make friends with the "right" people for us. And, as you stated, in today's toxic world, it's not at all easy.

Set up a couple of bird feeders when you take time off in December. Watching the birds eat is very relaxing and rewarding. Plus, you'll get some Vitamin D from the sun.

    • @wilts43
      @wilts43 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Nice idea...... but it depends?, In temperate latitudes (eg UK) you won't make Vit D from the sun between October & March (requisite wavelength is too short to penetrate the atmosphere at low Winter angles). And Bird-Feeders become Rat-Feeders..... in my experience you will get rats, who love what the birds scatter. And if your neighbour has a Bird Feeder you will get rats.

I really don't want to skip breakfast because it's part of my mindful morning routine to prepare it. Mostly I stop eating in the afternoon intuitive, never thought about fasting in my life. When I stopped doing that and started to eat in the evening, I gained weight for the first time in my life (during quarantine). Now I'm back to my old habits luckily and again don't eat after 2pm. My weight is perfect again. Intermittent fasting is the best method to lose weight and feel fantastic at the same time.

Same for me. I always ate in the morning it’s how we grew up. I tried once what all these doctors push the skipping of breakfast and boy it definitely didn’t work for me. Went food shopping and when i came out of the store i was so dizzy my head spinning had to wait for it to pass as I wasn’t sure how i was going to get home. Never again. Might have been low sugar in my blood well whatever but a bad idea. You can start fasting in the late afternoon and if anything it’s way safer to skip dinner and get the fasting time that way. We really need to use common sense when listening to these doctors. The stuff they recommend is not necessarily good for the entire population and can be even dangerous. Also I believe that anyone who tries to fast for prolonged time like days at a time shouldn’t be doing that while holding a job. If you work from home maybe, but not if you have to get out there and have any manual labor or just stressful job.

I really do like some of what Asprey has to say as I'm new to fasting, love it, and am soaking up a lot of info, but he's got a bone to pick with vegans and it gets old. A vegan diet isn't necessarily "low calorie" or "low fat" so I'm not sure why he mentioned it with those in the beginning. I've been a healthy vegan for over 35 years and fasting has come really easily to me. I've lost 10 pounds since April 1st. No problem with my "hunger levels". Doing great, Dave! :)

What an amazing conversation! I've listened to just about the entire video and I never listen to a full video. I want to go and buy all the books written by these two.
I have been doing keto and intermittent fasting for about a year now and I'm at the best weight of my life, but I have hit a bit of a plateau - it is like my body refuses to lose any more weight. I'm right at 99 lbs. Before I started this diet journey I was about 110. I am only 5 ft tall.
I eat a very strict keto diet most of the time and sometimes even more of a carnivore diet than keto. I sometimes do not eat after lunch. I can't seem to budge and get down to my goal weight of 97. I managed to get there for a few weeks this summer but it seems almost impossible now.
Let me add that I am extremely sensitive to carbs - if I have just a single meal or a day of not doing keto I can put on 4 lbs in a day and then I have to work extremely hard to lose it again. It can take me 7-10 days after one day of carbs to get back to where I was!
I work out 5-6 days per week about 30 minutes doing light weights and body weight exercises. Tracy Anderson Method.
    Any tips?

From my own experience, cut out all added sugar, and high-density carbs that turn into sugar in our bodies (bread, baked goods, such as muffins, etc., all pasta, fruit drinks, rice and potatoes), go easy on high-sugared fruit while you are losing the weight (bring back in moderation for maintenance). You will be astonished at how quickly you lose weight and how quickly your body starts to change shape). Most of all you will like how you wake up not craving food. Now, I'm not Ms. goody-two-shoes, I go off my mostly keto diet every once in a while, but as soon as I go back to it, things improve again.

You should pay more attention to how your clothes fit, i don’t bother with weighing myself all the time as it doesn’t matter as much as what i see in the mirror. Also people who have muscles will weigh more because the muscle is heavy. Better to use some resistance exercise to tighten up the muscles 💪🏽.

I’m guessing (guessing being the key word here) that cooking from scratch is what separates us from healthier people. Using plain ingredients (I mean without additives of any kind wherever possible) is the best way. I use lots of spices and herbs so it tastes good.
Meat for energy (cow-ruminant). I’m 74 and just got my eyes checked. Almost better than 20/20 corrected. That hasn’t been the case for a long time. Eating meat. It’s a dramatic difference.
My aunt and next door neighbors -roasted- a lot of meals of meat, potatoes, 3/4 different vegetables, had a cocktail every evening which I would never be able to handle 😝, and all four lived into their 90s which wasn’t true for their parents or siblings.

If you boil a big pan of potatoes, skins on or off. Cool them down and put them in the freezer for a couple of days, the freezing process kills most of the lectins. Re boil them then you can mash them or eat them whole.

Yes I know they employ people. Nothing wrong with making money it is the American way. And yes I have purchased some of his products. I started this way of eating a month ago hopefully to lose weight and to get off all prescriptions. Now I find with more watching and listening they try to convince me I need more pills. There is so much to do before buying pills. Assuming you are not too thin then fasting for as long as you can is the biggest thing most people can do to improve their health. Cutting sugar and grain is great too. The fasting improved my life more than I could have ever hoped for.
I would think for most people spending any money on supplements is not necessary at all to see vast improvement.
