I met Cespedes outside of a hotel in denver once. Ill never forget this world class athlete sitting on a bench, signing baseballs, while smoking a cigarette the day of a game where he hit 3 dingers😂
the one where he won't pick up the ball under the fence always gets me. Even the ump is like dawg, just pick it up
He had the weirdest athleticism too. When at full speed, he actually flew, but rarely chose to do so. I always hated his lack of care

I can kinda see why they tried Cespedes at 3B. It forces him rely more on his instinctive reactions rather than having time to think and make an error due to a brain fade (plus he can still use that arm). Didn't work but still a reasonable experiment.
I miss watching Cespedes play the game. There will never be another
I’m so sorry for the 2015 WS, but I cannot tell you how amazing it was as a royals fan and living in KC. I was in 7th grade and we got together in middle school watch parties and it was a huge deal to us. Thank you for your sacrifice and allowing us that happiness
I was lucky enough to go to KC wildcard game in 2014, a WS game in 14 and 15. The chiefs have been amazing since, but nothing beats playoff baseball... its also a bit cheaper.

Javier Baez got a bunch of gold gloves too. He was a human highlight reel but, like Cespedes, it was the routine plays that gave him trouble.

He reminds of two plays I made in a game of softball a few decades ago - the only one I was ever in center field for. We were playing on a football field, so there wasn't much in the way of a fence. The batter mashed the ball, and I just sprinted straight back. At the last second, I lunged out with my glove, head down, and the ball just landed right in it.
The next time that batter got up to bat, I trotted back to about where I caught that one, figuring it would be easier to come in on the ball. No need, though. He hit it straight. To. Me. I didn't take two steps. Just stuck the glove up, the ball landed in it...and promptly bounced out and landed behind me.
in like 20 years we will be able to talk about all the things that Cespedes did both on and off the field and the new generation will think at least half of the things we say were made up. Thank you for all the memories Yoenis

As a lifelong Royals fan, that Alcides Escobar leadoff/furst pitch inside the park homer of Cespedes's leg is one of my greatest baseball memories as a fan! Lol
I was at a Braves game sometime in 2015-2016 when Turner Field was still their home, and Cespedes was on the Mets. I was in the center field bleachers close to the wall and guess who was playing center for the Mets that game.
There was a flyball out to Cespedes, and I don't think he ever saw it. It landed about 25 feet, maybe more, to his right. I've never seen that happen in person since then.
Side note: There was a fan next to me that would not stop heckling Cespedes and he only got worse once that play happened

I sat in LF at Comerica when Cespedes was playing for the Tigers. He caught a ball at the warning track and stood there for half a beat before switching the ball to his throwing hand and without lifting his hand above his waist flicked an ~80mph rope back in to the SS. There was an audible gasp from everyone in my section who saw it but it's one of those things that you would never notice if you didn't see it in person

I love the video. I would however like to point out that when his glove was down, it came lifted up as the ball came down. I have not heard the conversation around this play, but it looks like he was going for a trick catch... Lol. like, I was no joke watching the Savanah Banana's play the MLB association last night on here and these fools do stuff like that all the time. Seems like he'd fit right in.

His plays remind me of one time when I was in little league, I caught a ball deep in center field, the runner at second got too early of a jump and just kept running to home after rounding 3rd, so I trotted to second base for the force out for an unassisted double play while the kid who ran was celebrating at home none the wiser to being out. My coach in disbelief just pleaded with me to throw the ball to second next time something like that happens rather than wasting time.

It Was A Lose Lose Trade For The A's But Me Being An A's (And Also GIANTS Fan) Fan I Was Already Used To The A's Letting Their Talent Leave To Other Team's, Or Trading Them Away 🤷🏻♂️

I always thought that dude would intentionally kick balls just to bait the runner with his arm. Especially on non fly balls that weren’t catchable
I am a Nats fan and I always got a kick out of when the Mets lost. I like to say "The most beautiful thing in the world is a crying Mets fan." But still, Cespedes' awful playing in the outfield did sometimes piss me off. There was one time that it made me very happy, tho.
He allowed Micheal A Taylor to hit an inside-the-park grand slam. I remember the ball landed behind him and he was just casually jogging towards the wall like he was in no hurry for anything. Meanwhile, Taylor was ripping around the bases and was safe at the plate before you knew it.
Also, Cespedes said that he hated to drink water because he didn't like the taste. As a result, he suffered muscle cramps that frequently limited his playing time. That pissed me off even tho I hate the Mets. He'd rather hurt his team by not playing than drink some water that he didn't like the taste of. That was ridiculous. It's clear as day to me that the only thing Yoenis Cespedes cared about while playing the game was Yoenis Cespedes. That also explains why he made the spectacular tough plays and let the easier ones drop. Making easy plays aren't gonna get you on the highlight reel.
As a Royals fan, this was one of the best moments of my Royals fandom life. lol
He reminds me of clip hitters in video games. Throws the round just so he can try to get a cool clip or trick shot.

😅 forgot about this guy. Throwback kind of player. Strong and talented but a slacker. Lazy streak at times. Good hitter but sloppy in outfield sometimes but strong throwing arm.. He would smoke cigarettes with other players in dugout.

Cespedes became very infamous in Cuba because he dropped a routine fly ball in an elimination game against Japan that led to an early exit in the 2009 WBC...he defected about a year later because most people said he would never play there again (not because he wanted to come to the US...since he's self admittedly communist)
He lures the hitter to advance by misfielding the ball just enough to challenge extra bases bcuz all the runner will see is the bobble of the ball or it rolling away but hes watching the runner the whole time then hell unload a lazer beam of a throw for the tag out. Brilliant!
that's if he does do it on purpose... for all we know Cespedes doesn't plan anything and he just takes advantage of the opportunities in front of him.
I understand your perspective as a Mets fan, but as an A’s fan that mad was a prophet of the lord and there’s nothing anyone can say that would diminish that. The Jon Lester trade might be the dumbest move in all of baseball history behind bambino to the yanks

Cespedes was a AMAZING athlete. with the glove and the bat. I do wish he wouldve used both hands to catch routine popups.. but he had a dam cannon for an arm. I think he could a stayed around longer than he did but of course it was his attitude and off the field BS that fucked up his career. he believed his own hype... he had all the fire and just natural ability with the A's but he needed to prove himself in New York and he didn't. (Yasiel Puig same story almost.. both amazingly talented but when watching them both play in their prime its no wonder that the easy stuff stop coming so easy... they played at 100MPH every game and I respect that.
About your Mets.. 2015 I remember Duda totally fucking up that throw home that woulda won the game but then the Mets went on to lose the series off that play... I think. I know the Royals were up 3-0 or 2-0. it was an important game but the METS are famous for the whole team imploding at once.
