      I'd have to agree with you about that. I really like the idea of these licensed consoles with a renewed focus on authenticty from MyArcade. But unfortunately the limitations means they are for collectors already familiar with the games. For the $40 MSRP there are countless unlicensed handhelds that maybe aren't as nice in some aspects but are infinitely more customizable and expandable. For that reason I think they serve a much wider market and are probably better for kids.

      You either buy this or one of the other non-official portable emulator machines. They may not be specially made for Atari games, but still play the games pretty well. Actually I wonder if someone even hacked this thing to add more games.

But I think the 2600 graphics will look great on the small screen. No tiny writing to try and decipher. Looking forward to getting this and perhaps adding more roms if possible. I'm going to reiterate that the d-pad may be mushy because it may actually be a Sony PSP-styled thumbstick underneath, and to try pressing one of the fire buttons the moment the ball in Pong or Super Breakout hits the paddle to see if that speeds up the ball. If it does, the roms for both games may be using the Jakks Pacific versions and not the arcade or the home console versions. Either way, this may be the version of this particular release I decide to go with since it's small enough to toss in a pocket or bag and the games can be played fast.

    I’m hard on most of these emulation devices, but I do feel like these handhelds have a legitimate place in the market. Playing old school games on a touchscreen freaking sucks. You really want something with physical buttons. So that alone justifies this device’s existence in my book.
    My only complaint is the games, same as always. My favorite games are always the ones least likely to be on a device like this. I love Imagic games but good luck getting those on a device. I love Frogger and Moon Patrol but they rarely show up on these emulators. That’s always the let down for me.

Mostly same size screen and available games, but you can add more games via carts for only $20 (although it's another $20 per cart). It’s crazy that you get so many games with this unit , but only 1 with the other and both are the same buying price. Taking into consideration the paddle game issues, etc., I decided for the Space Invaders. Yeah, I know, it’s just one game, but it’s among my favorites and the artwork on the device looks amazing. Only problem I have with these systems that have games built in is that they tend to be full of games that I, and I think most people, don't really like that much. I'm surprised that they tried paddle games like Circus. They should have put the scrollwheel on it like Hyperkin did with the Ranger controller. That works great for a paddle. Gravitar is a tough but great game! It's underrated for sure. It and Millipede could be reasons to get this on their own. RealSports games look great. I wish I was better at them. It's kinda cool that it has a few prototype games on there. Weird that there are non-Atari games on here since this is an official Atari product. Plenty of Atari games they could have put on there instead. Maybe some 7800 games if it can run bonus games with this much detail on them.

    There's a B button for some reason. Any chance that could be used to adjust the speed of your paddle in paddle games?
    I don't foresee myself purchasing one of these. The earlier 2600 portable let you add your own games with an SD card, a feature I presume does not exist with this one.

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's used for navigating the menus and for the bonus games. It may slow/speed the paddle - I'll check it out. No SD card slot, though.

    Looks okay. Nice packaging and console design but why companies insist on including paddle games on systems without paddles is a mystery. I get that they’re recognizable titles but it’s borderline false advertising, since they’re absolutely unplayable.

    Does anyone have a list of just the Atari 2600 games that are included? The newer stuff doesn’t interest me but I don’t want to buy it if only 20 of the 100 games are actually Atari 2600 games

    I think it's a little funny that the games listed on the front are all games that didn't use a joystick (at least the original arcade games) given the controller included is a (joystick-equivalent) directional pad. I know- they're just meant to be big Atari names. Just a thought on the lack of a "tv type" button- some of the included games actually use that button/switch for a purpose other than the obsolete intended one. Did they patch the games to use the other face button instead? For some of these games at least (others used it for unnecessary QOL functions like pause) that means some lost functionality.
    Unrelated to video- I learned from Adrian's Digital Basement that SFGE ran concurrently to Vintage Computer Festival SE and was even part of the admission price. Did any you guys attend and meet fellow youtubers like Adrian attending that side of the fence? Just curious. I met him, as well as a few others like Clint/LGR and Dave Murray/8-Bit Guy at VCF Midwest. God willing, I hope to meet you guys someday too- I know that means me getting off my behind and heading to one you all attend like SFGE, I'm not asking you to come here. But if you do, an incentive is Galloping Ghost arcade in Brookfield, just saying... :D

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, QunMang. I definitely spent some time in the vinage computing section of SFGE. Not sure how long it's been there but I have enjoyed that portion over the past two SFGEs for sure. And Ghost is on my bucket list - I'll get there one day!

    I recall Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark from back in the day (another HSW title), but since it requires two joysticks I guess they couldn't include it.

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  ปีที่แล้ว

      That one doesn't get included in compilations due to licensing with the movie's license holder, sadly. I love that game.

    • @mikmurphy1
      @mikmurphy1 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they just re-titled it "Lost Ark" I wonder if that could still be considered infringing LOL. The low-resolution graphics would seem to make it difficult to make side-by-side comparisons to the movie(s).

    This looks very nice for original Atari VCS games.
    I think Activision Boxing and Tempest are quite good, considering the limitations of the platform.
    Atari games never needed pause, rewind, or save game. You play the game, it's over. That's it.
    But ya just gotta have paddles. Other game systems didn't have paddles, but Atari always did.
    Too many games were written for them and the conversion to joystick is never as good.
    I still don't care for the conversion of Asteroids to joystick. Too many controls in the same place.
    The original arcade game just used buttons for the different functions.
    An SD card would be nice, but I'm looking forward to something that can play the 400/800/5200 games I remember.

    With some paddle games you can sometimes hold down A or B for fast or slow movement. Have you tried this with the Pocket Player? If that's not the case it'd definitely be something to consider for a future release. Keep up the awesome work!

    • @cryptocsguy9282
      @cryptocsguy9282 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @puzzud New Atari didn't have much cash last time I checked their financial reports and I believe the CEO Wade Rosen has more money than the company itself so I'd say them releasing all this hardware with limited funds is very impressive but also highly risky

    • @GenXGrownUp
      @GenXGrownUp  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Atari's not releasing this - My Arcade is. They're licensing the IP from Atari, so this is a money-maker for Atari, not a risk.
