That Time A Guy Wrote A “Screw You” Sequel To Forrest Gump (Did We Really Need These Sequels?!?)

  • It's pretty common that successful movies often get a sequel. Based off a novel, Forrest Gump was a popular movie that did well at the box office, so why did we never get a second film?

    Brilliant. Forrest Gump meets Tom Hanks, thereby making the movie impossible, as he knew they'd be casting Tom Hanks as Gump. Lmao. The details of how he made that book unadaptable are amazing..

    • @jamielonsdale3018
      @jamielonsdale3018 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      With clever editing tricks, they could have Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump meet Tom Hanks as Tom Hanks. There are movies where the entire cast is one actor.

    • @jademoon7938
      @jademoon7938 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@jamielonsdale3018 There's a few reasons that wouldn't have been a successful endeavour. Just on having Hanks in two roles; actors are billed by role, Hanks was a top earning actor at the time, that would have been a huge investment. Given the material, it wouldn't have been an investment that paid off, because the material wasn't what they wanted. This wasn't just a cameo, it was Hanks in the story with Gump. That was done intentionally.
      Just on the roles; Gump is Hanks, there are a few times in the original that he looks different, like his marathon, but for the most part, he's just Tom Hanks with a brush cut. Gump looks too much like Hanks to put them side-by-side without destroying the illusion that Gump isn't Hanks. They wouldn't be able to make Hanks look different either, or no one would recognize him, so you'd just have two Tom Hanks on screen. Too confusing, shatters the immersion, despite the fact that some could be okay with it, most wouldn't be. That was intentional too.
      So while it was possible to have done that at the time (late 90s), it wasn't something that would've been good, and people wouldn't have liked it, for those reasons and more, but these are the two simplest reasons. Costs too much, too much of a gamble, not worth it. Which is why Groom did it. He didn't like what happened to his first book so he sabotaged the second so they wouldn't even try to develop it into a screenplay.

    • @anna-flora999

      Or they could have took that out like they took out stuff from the first book

    • @jademoon7938
      @jademoon7938 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@anna-flora999 It's not just that. Involving Hanks and his film Big aren't the only issues, there are other details. Like Mark David Chapman meeting Gump at a Bible themed amusement and portraying David from the Bible (Gump is Goliath) where he "won't shut up about Jodie Foster" is a big one that comes to mind.
      Gump being involved in even more potentially offensive acts (like his acts in the original film have been called, stealing away the history of many notable people, often POC) like causing the Berlin Wall to fall over a girlfriend, getting involved in Iran-Contra and going to prison, getting involved in the Whitewater scandal with the Clinton's, etc etc. More touchy subjects that would be even harder than the Vietnam War.
      Plus Jenny is a ghost through the entire book that visits Gump all the time. Lt Dan fucks him right over and takes off with all the money from Bubba Gump, goes blind and dies. Stuff fans of the movie don't want.
      They tried to adapt it a couple times but Paramount refused all the scripts and Hanks said he wouldn't do it. It was intentional on the part of Groom and it worked. People who read the books, like the books, but the people who only watched the movie wouldn't have accepted a lot of what happens. Groom knew that. The book was well received. But it wasn't adaptable like the first one was.

    • @Dreamwriter4242
      @Dreamwriter4242 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      It sometimes happens, but it's expensive, takes a lot of time, and then they settle out of court. Peter Jackson sued New Line over the profits from the Lord of the Rings trilogy; after three years of battling in court they settled (and it seems they only did that to convince Peter Jackson to attach his name to the Hobbit movies...this was before it was planned for him to actually direct them). After that settlement, the Tolkien Estate then sued about the same thing, and a year later that one was settled as well.

      I suspect that people are somewhat afraid of being blackballed if they cause trouble. They'll just find another writer/director/actor.
      One thing I wish would get discussed is how much of the gross actually gets back to the production companies - you have to assume that cinemas take a fair chunk, so maybe they need to define net as gross minus costs of distribution, whereas a lot of the net disappears in the nebulous 'marketing' costs

    John Landis himself told me this story: When Art Buchwald sued Paramount for ripping off his idea for the first COMING TO AMERICA (Landis says they never saw it - - I believed him)
    The studio lost the case but claimed Buchwald was not owed anything because the movie that earned nearly $300 million did not make any money. Buchwald took them to court again to force the studio to open their REAL accounting. The studio could no longer hide the profit and he was paid $900, 000 as a settlement. But (according to Landis,) the YEARS it took him to get the money cost him about $300,000 in legal fees. On the other hand, because the studio had to open their books, Landis and Eddie Murphy EACH made another $7 million they would otherwise never have seen.

    The writer actually confirmed that Jenny in fact did NOT die of AIDS, in the sequel novel "Gump & Co." it is stated that she died from Hepatitis C from all of her years as a drug addict. Hepatitis C was not discovered and named until 1986, so at that point in the 70's it was often fatal as no effective treatments were available. Hepatitis C and AIDS are very different.
