In this video he plays it safe, probably the instruments have been very loud so he couldn't hear himself to full extend. And possibly his breaking point between chest and headvoice is quite low, so he has to switch to his head voice early in order to pitch correctly. Also, I think the pitch of this song doesn't quite fit his vocal range.
