Use ZeroTier with Blue Iris - view your cameras remotely and securely!

  • My recommended way to view your security cameras remotely while utilizing Blue Iris security camera software is using ZeroTier. ZeroTier is an open source virtual private network (VPN) software and mesh networking technology that allows users to connect devices, services, and applications securely over the Internet. It is designed to be easy to set up and use, and can be used to connect both local and cloud-based services. It is particularly useful for creating secure connections between remote devices, such as those used for telecommuting, IoT, and cloud-based services.
ZeroTier also works for those who have an ISP (internet service provider) who utilizes "CGNAT" or carrier grade nat. CGNAT means you don'e get your own public IP address making it difficult to utilize a client VPN back to your network, or even standard port forwarding.

Contacted my ISP they were useless beyond their remit. I saw this on utube, set it up and shazam!! it worked! thank you for your brilliant tutorial even a 70yr old like me understood it.

Awesome! You make it so easy and simple to understand. I am going to now try to set this up on my BI. I am able to port forward, but not able to access BI on my iPhone unless I am at home. I used to be able to make all this work well until my PCs crashed beyond recognition; it doesn't work well on the new PC at all. If I am able to do ZeroTier with the PC, it would bring the BI accessibility to a level of simplicity of operating a Mac. Thank you.

This video is awesome. Thank you. I followed along step by step and had a small issue, but was able to quickly fix it and now my cameras work perfectly when remotely viewing them away from home. My other solution was to use a double ISP set up because my primary ISP (Starlink) blocks port forwarding. My secondary ISP is a MiFi device on the AT&T network, but my router (MikroTik) is WAY to advanced for me to figure out how to properly set it up that way after several TH-cam University videos and trials and errors. Thanks again!

    • @k9erv
      @k9erv ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@learnblueiris I believe it was a setting error in the mobile app from when I tried to get the program to work from the very start. At the time, I had not yet figured out that Starlink blocked port forwarding and made several changes in the mobile app settings, thinking I was doing something wrong. Once I realized the issue was with Starlink, I found your video, followed it step by step but still could not get it to work. I then, as a last ditch effort, deleted the set up on the mobile app, started over, and used the QR code on the PC app under the users tab and my cameras immediately started working.

I am glad someone has done a video on this. Thanks! I am curious why you selected Allow Global, Allow Default and Allow DNS. I did a bunch of Googling and can't really find a good explanation of what these options do. And as they are not defaulted I have never used them.
I have ZT set up with Blue Iris and with one remote location using DSL it works great but another behind a cellular ISP its terrible. I only have used the Allow Managed option on my setups and so if you have some info to share as to why the other options are desirable that would be most helpful.

I was able to accomplish this. My question is the VPN on the phone is always ON. Is all phone traffic now going through zero Tier? I also have a home vpn server on firewalla using wiregaurd ,what’s the difference? I manually turn this on and off in the phone when I need to reach certain things on the network. Ultimately I only want the BI to auto-connection to be VPN. Not all traffic. So ON Demand VPN when trying to reach a specific local IP Address when not on the local network. I’m sure I need a better education on this, but I’m not sure how to accomplish this.

Well I believe I followed your instructions and cannot connect to my cameras remotely. What have I done wrong? At one point you used the zerotier ip address of the lan in the lan spot on BI, but then later you say use the internal ip of bI pic in the lan spot. Needs clarification please.

I tried ZeroTier and couldn’t get it to work either. I switched to Tailscale and it worked perfectly for me. Thinking ZeroTier is buggy on iOS at the moment.

Wonderful videos as are all yours. I watched the Zerotier video a dozen times but still can’t connect outside my home only on my wifi. Works great on my Iphone if I’m on wifi at home. So I’m missing something somewhere any suggestions as to what? iPhone’s Zerotier is enabled with the proper Code as is the BI app software.

Hey thank you! In your iPhone BI app, does the WAN IP (external IP) show the IP of the ZeroTier interface from the Blue Iris PC? That is what should be there.

@@thomasdumas3686 Not sure if you fixed your problem, but I followed his video as well and at first I could not get BI to work on my phone off of the WiFi either. What did work was that I opened the BI app on the phone, I clicked "edit" and then removed that server. I then went back and clicked "add a new server", followed all of the prompts, and finally got to the screen where it allowed me to take a picture of a QR code. Your QR code is on the BI PC under settings -> users, then just click once on your user name. I scanned the QR code and my cameras popped up almost instantly. I made sure my WiFi was turned off so that I was connected through the phone carrier. I am guessing there might have been an error in my original set up. You might give this a try and see if it works for you too.

Love your videos. I have Zerotier set up on my blue iris computer and my android phone. Zerotier recognized both and are both active. I have Zerotier on my phone and turned on. For some reason i can't connect to the blue iris server through the app on my phone. I've used the setup button and the ip addresses populate. Still no connection. Any ideas what to look for?

I love the idea of this but I’m curious how it will cooperate with having other VPNs on a mobile device. I assume I’d have to switch back and forth to access zerotier vs other vpn resources? I want to do a little more research on the security aspect but this sounds like something I might like to tinker with.

Hi, you need the NVR to also take part in the virtual VPN, so I don't think the Reolink NVR supports this. Best option in your situation is setting up a VPN on your router/gateway

So this is essentially hosted (cloud) vpn instead of point to point vpn, and you are entrusting access to your devices to a 3rd party .
