These sort of Grand Designs are so much more interesting to watch than "Ahh we went 2 million over budget"
I agree, like the woodsman who built his house in the woods where he worked. Not your typical average house but it wasn’t the “we spent 20,000 on the bathtub” kind of a Grand Design house.
Having said that, these guys may have saved £137,000, but they still spent over £280,000 and still haven’t finished it. What’s more, where did a couple of 25 year olds find £280,000? From the sounds of it and given I never heard the word mortgage spoken I imagine they come from a relatively wealthy background, ie. bomad.
And they may have saved £137,000 by a little skipping diving and buying ex display kitchens and appliances instead of brand new ones, they still ended up building something pretty typical in terms of design. Yes it’s nicer than your average Barrett home, but in terms of architecture this is a pretty typical especially looking at other western countries. They didn’t take any real risks with the architecture, instead they saved money by what is effectively a little freecycling and eBaying when it comes to some materials.
£280,000 including the land cost, is good I think. But compare it to something like this: www.arba.pro/realisations/mchamps/ that was built for around £100,000 not including land cost (which even if it was £150,000 for the land still puts it well below Jack’s total build cost) and there’s no comparison.

If you look on eBay £2000 does seem to be common rate when someone is done with their kitchen and want an upgrade especially if you look at bidding auctions
@@ToxCcc me and my dad did exactly that, we moved into a house we where renovating and bought a second hand kitchen with appliances for an absolute steal. Its the way to go when on a budget
miele produucts are really expensive, 2k alone are probably it
@@ffab101p121 here in Switzerland people give away kitchens like this one for free, they just want people to go there disassemble it and take it away because dumpsters and trash is very expensive here, nobody wants to bother

The housing market is fucked. This is what people are forced to do now to get what they want even with decent money and work ethic.
Maybe it's time UK consider allowing tiny houses like US do.
Sometimes people want to get creative AND use materials that haven't nearly expired their "shelf-life". I personally know people that throw away perfectly useful materials and things, and it pisses me off because I think of how many things I could do with them if I had the space, either to keep or to sell.
@@VisualGameDev As much as I love the ingenuity of tiny houses I think it's sadly a a sign of the bad times we are in when tiny houses are becoming fashionable. People see tiny houses as hope, freedom from debt. I see bird cages for humans whilst the richest in society live in mansions. We need more balance, the reason tiny houses have become so popular is because normal housing has become less affordable.

@@VisualGameDev The only projects I see with tiny homes are projects that give each tiny home massive lawn space. Seeing as space is exactly the issue in European cities, I don't see these tiny homes making a massive dent in the housing problem.

Where the hell did he get the money from to do that? Most struggle at that age with a deposit let alone £280k cash.
Including the land and cost of building the house. That's a bargain, given what the alternative is.

@@abujunayed Yes - considering alternatives. However the sad truth is that £280K is simply out of reach for the vast majority of young people, even with a mortgage. £280K is no bargain.
@@dxelson Let's say you put a 10% deposit down, (£28,000). And you were able to secure a £252,000, 25 year mortgage for the rest with a very generous 2% loan. In total that's £1,068 a month for the next 25 years of your life. You also have to consider a bank will usually only allow you to loan around 3 or 4 times your salary. If we say they allow 4 times what you earn. The you have to be earning £63,000 a year.
That's not what I would call affordable. It is possible of course, say, these 2 are both full time working well paid jobs of around £30K each, however that is not the average situation for most people in UK aged 20 to 30. And even at 30K each, it's at the maximum they can loan.
Not to mention, this is a self build, mortgage lenders are not as eager to offer low interest loans on these. I imagine the interest would have been above 2%.

Working in Building Control he wouldn't get away with them... requires balustrade with handrail and no gaps between the treads as a tripping hazard haha

For a high quality home (compared to most modern builds, which in the UK are basically glorified cardboard boxes) it’s a reasonable sum. It’s likely they can sell it on for a lot more probably pushing close to 350k maybe more.
It’s a good way to go about things and there’s a huge sense of pride in actually building your own home (getting someone else to do it doesn’t count).
Good luck selling it for a profit when it's not to code, look at the state of those stairs...

Awesome work by the self builders but if you listen to the interview at 3:45 he says they've saved that much money compared to getting a builder to do the work. So actually most of the saving has been made by avoiding using contractors not by scavenging.
That’s right labour isn’t cheap
I don't know how it is in the UK, but in Norway most contractors will add 20% to the cost of any materials on top of their hourly costs. And they will be getting 10-15% off the material costs on top of that through frequent buyer discounts at the hardware stores.
That's why I do as much as I can myself. They're all a bunch of thieves.
@@-_James_- yes, if you let other people handle all aspects of it, you will get screwed. As a civil engineer, I can tell you that a small house building is easy, it's like a lego building. You need a good civil engineer to calculate and design a plan so that it is easy to build, structurally sound and cheap. With a little bit of research, you can do most of the work. Material wise, timber is so widely accessible and cheap. But it requires dedication and ambition.

I've done all of our back & front gardens with salvaged & reclaimed, materials destined for the skip or wood burner, turf that was no longer wanted, it looks great, it's nice to re use & recycle free or next to nothing materials

Great job on the building and the interior. Absolutely nothing wrong with scavenging -just so long as it is good quality - and the scavenging has not morphed into hoarding - there is a big difference. I would strongly suggest bannisters - for the staircases - that is a huge lawsuit waiting to happen -it would be awful if the injury liability and the significant money saved on the house was then spent on an injury settlement! Just be sure to find beautiful recycled wood! Even the rabbit is happy and settled!

@@andreaandrea6716 Those stairs don't look up to building regs in the UK, either. I've seen less dangerous ones being nixed on GD for that reason. It will be hard to insure if he doesn't get bannisters.

I like the house, but for me the outside is a little to dark. I think its rather depressing to look at it, the inside is great though.
That staircase looks lethal.
That kitchen was worth more than 12k, he said it was 12k for the kitchen itself. He was referring to the cabinetry. There would be the cost of the appliances, all Miele so approximately 4k. Plus the cost of the quartz worktop, approximately 2k. So a very good deal imho.

One that walks out of school and into a high paying job. Its very common in Australia's mining sector. Boys as young as 19 are getting 250k a YR!

If this is the Newbury in Berkshire then he IS damned lucky to have a property which, for the size and quality, is about 300 k cheaper than the average for the area. My sister and brother-in-law live in Berkshire and even though he earns around 80 k per year they can't afford to buy, their rent is £1,400 per month ...... which apparently is pretty inexpensive!
