Ancient stone housebarn becomes couple's tranquil home-office

  • In the Cantabrian mountains of Northern Spain, the traditional barn houses- used by nomadic farmers who graze their livestock on only grasses- have been abandoned as larger mechanized operations took over the industry.
Laura Álvarez, who grew up enjoying the raw nature of this region, bought an abandoned stone house barn, a "cabaña pasiega", and rebuilt it paying homage to its past (passive solar orientation, few windows), but with a modern take.
To capture the areas’ rapidly changing weather and expansive views, Álvarez cut huge panoramic sliding glass doors into each side of the home to capture a view of the mountain and waterfalls, as well as the view of the valley below.
Dubbing the home Villa Slow, Laura and her partner Lewis Bailey (who created much of the home’s furniture from local wood) spent their two-month quarantine here and fell in love with the slower rhythms of life: chopping wood, cooking outdoors, hiking and watching the scenery. They are now trying to figure out a more permanent move to the home.

@@truthiseverything9511 Oh, yes! Also, having been born in the middle of the summer in a desert city (Salt Lake City, Utah) with a hereditary kidney disorder that makes me extremely prone to dehydrating easily, I can't easily care much for the heat. The fact that the heat in Salt Lake City, Utah is a dry heat makes it almost tolerable. However, if you take the heat of Salt Lake City in summer and combine it with the humidity of Dublin, Ireland or the United Kingdom's Lake District or anywhere near the Midlands around Yorkshire, you would begin to get an idea of what it is like to live in the North American deep south in summer.

Just a historical fact: when romans arrived to north Spain, they were afraid of the cantabrian tribes that lived in the top of this mountains, really agressive and with no intention to be dominated, the roman empire had to fight them, and once captured, they were all crucified in this mountains, but what really scared the romans was the that at the night, the hunged cantabric men were even singing war songs from the crosses to show their opposition to surrender. Difficult to imagine such an hostile land now that looks more like a piece of heaven.

I think she meant the lifestyle. The herds of cows and goats, are no longer as prevalent as they used to be and therefore the pasiegos are falling apart. Instead of a community of where several families lived and there were scattered pasiegos all around, now there's more ruins and fewer families living there full time.
      That was my interpretation anyway.

Such a beautiful place! I really love the rebuilding of old buildings like this housebarn, into something new and beautiful. Mixing the old and new together and giving the old building a new life is amazing. Unfortunately there aren't too many buildings like this in North America anymore, and when they are found, more often than not they are destroyed to build some ugly structure that really doesn't fit into the surroundings.
A particular thing I really like with this home is that they have kept the history of it by rebuilding it, but also by having the small touches of the past like the tree stump tables and small seat which are the furniture from the past.
They are very lucky to have found such a beautiful place to rebuild and have as a home.
    Thanks Kirsten,
    Peace, Happiness, Love and Laughter,
    Keep Safe All,

This is as tasteful and elegant as can be. Love the scale, layout, finish, furnishing, etc. beautiful land and views and wonderful natural, uncomplicated congruent design. Thanks for showing how good these things can be done.

    Think about this:
Hundreds of years ago, those that lived in the country side were the peasants, yet the rich lived in the cities and towns with other people. In 2020 people are in the cities yet dream of living in the country side. Nature is good for the mind, body and soul.

Rich people used to have country houses too. They'd go there for a few months/weeks every now and then precisely because of the good air and to cleanse their body and soul.

Your insight and dedication to perfectionism / along with such an incredible piece of property is very inspirational to me! Great job! This is exactly the type of living style I am currently pursuing on the big Island of Hawaii… Projected to take place sometime in August 2021/ or before.
Thanks for posting such a detailed and inspirational video!

I really, really liked this design. Kept elements from the past, it doesn't feel too big or too small, it's cozy, aesthetically pleasing and built to fit the weather conditions of the area. Very, very nice

Incredible house. Just one suggestion to the owners, if I may: it is not ideal to keep the guitar stored under the fireplace as the high heat may warp the neck; if not the high heat, the temperature drop when moving the guitar elsewhere (to play it on the sofa, for instance) may - any sort of sudden or relatively rapid temperature change can have averse effects on your instrument. Take care and enjoy!

So easy to forget, I'm in New Zealand and it is winter right now ... and so the heat pump has been on a lot, picked up my guitar this evening, haven't played for a fair while, and even after tuning it it didn't sound right.

Great location. Excellent preservation of the stone and a simple but effective re-design. The only thing you could fault it for would be its small size but that could also be considered to be one of its strengths. 10/10.

This is most a most beautiful "open house" I was invited to tour! The simplicity , the connection with the nature took my breath away! The used if space and minimalist decor invites outdoor to indoor. Loved, loved, loved and one more time loved!
The owner(I believe) mentioned that she tried to keep the cost of building low. What was the cost of building the house, if I can ask?

Great architectural idea not only for a place like Cantabria but even the Midwest USA. This informs how I want to build my family's home on the prairie. The design is timeless, simple, humble, and appealing. Passive solar design is beneficial here too, with our fairly sunny winters.
