I do love sill, and I think that a lot of people here eat knäckebörd with ägg and kalles kaviar for breakfast. But I'm skeptical if sill is actually a regular part of anyones everyday breakfast? Personally I only eat sill at christmas, easter, midsummer, when it's part of a hotel breakfast and occasionally as lunch during late spring/early summer or whenever there are new potatoes available. A can of sill, cooked new potatoes, sourcream with some freshcut chives, that just screams "Swedish summer is approaching".

Surströmming was created during a salt shortage in sweden, i think it was usually dried in salt (like you do with salt cod for exmple. Pre refridgeration) But when you dont use as much salt, it starts a fermentation process instead!
It is a tradition along the coast in the north, where the Baltic sea is nearly freshwater. Salt would have been expensive, so it makes sense that poor Swedes tried to use as little as possible. I tried it twice at the same time - i.e. first and last!
Ärtsoppa/peasoup is usually not eaten as portraid for breakfast. usually with plain mustard or coarse mustard on the side of the plate depending on taste. not ontop. Also pickled herring is not a staple breakfast. However filmjök with musli or corn flaskes/porridge, a boiled egg with salt or kaviar. and sandwich of some kind, especielly knäckebröd. Usually pickled herring in the variations there of, are usually for special occasions. such as x-mas, easter etc. That said in hotels there are more common to find pickled herring then in most swedish homes.
I like my ärtsoppa with mustard and a couple of slices of cheese in the soup. And I eat the pancakes at the same time with the soup. Always on thursdays. Great video guys!
Just for info, there are quite a lot of Swedes, including myself, who don’t fancy fishy food such as kaviar or pickled herring for breakfast. Common to have here is also a bowl of yoghurt with or without musli, a soft open sandwich, toasted or not, with whatever you like on top. I prefer butter and occasionally a bit of orange marmelade. Coffee, tea or hot chocolate is common to drink and maybe a glass of orange juice or a fruit. Some slice their fruit and add it to the yoghurt bowl. Some like to have a bowl of oatmeal with milk or a traditional English breakfast which is also popular here in Sweden, often stripped down to only bacon and eggs. A lot of people I know love lingonberry jam on pancakes. It has a slight bitter taste which I think gives the pancakes more of an adult flavour, compared to overly sweet strawberry jams and such which kids usually prefer. I guess Swedes are divided when it comes to jam preference on pancakes. Due to this bitterness lingonberry jam is often used as a condiment to various savory dishes too such as meatballs. I refuse to even go near Surströmming so even Swedes sometimes find those downright nasty. Some love it, some hate it.
Great video guys ... the food looked pretty good 🤗 I actually cook a great Swedish chocolate cake, Kladdkaka ... diabetes and heart attack on a plate ... more than sure you'll enjoy it too. Looking forward to more Swedish adventures 🤗🥂🥃🍷

Cool, peaspup and pancakes is also a very traditional combination in the Netherlands. Erwtensoep en pannenkoeken. Our pancakes look exactly the same, just as thick, a little thicker than crapes. The pancakes are soooo yummy

Knäckebröd should be a staple everywhere in the world. It's shelf stable for a long time. Lots of fibres and zinc. If you buy the ones with tons of different seeds its even more healthy. You can have anything from just butter to cheese to anything you want. And it's very, very cheap. It's the perfect food.
We have a version of that swedish chocolate ball here in newfoundland canada! We call them snowballs! they are covered with alot more coconut! also our liquor store are gov't run as well, but you can buy beer at the corner stores and gas stations!
The original ones in sweden were not called chocolateballs, they were called negroballs, but that name recently got controversial. Also coconut is a new idea, it used to be pearl-sugar, same kind of sugar used on the cinnamon bun.
For think pancakes, there are quite a few different jams and other stuff that is popular and realliy delicious to put on.. Vanilla icecream, or whipped cream, couldberry jam, maple syrup... And you can mix and match what you like if one is not enough :) .. I really like the cloudberry jam with vanilla icecream on top of them-
What is an absolute must with the pea soup but I did not see in the video is some pork that you cut into tiny pieces and put in the soup. Just checked a can of ready-made pea soiup in the cupboard and it says 17% pork in it. I like some mustard too, but no where near the amount Ludvig uses.
Sill (Herring) for breakfirst is NOT common i Sweden. Its more for holidays. Kalles is common but like 50% of swedes likes it. Boiled egg is very common. Hey Cathy! Airalo would work very well at ports/land adventures - it's so handy to have when travelling, a real time saver! I found this on the website re the eSIM working out at sea on a cruise ship - *Please note that Airalo cannot ensure the strength of coverage in maritime areas. It's important to note that while coverage is available in urban areas, the reliability of signal reception may be limited in sea regions due to the nature of the network infrastructure.
I loove knäckebröd with Vegemite! I also top the sandwich with cold meatball on top of the vegemite. An alternative is to also add Swedish beetroot salad.
Ärtsoppa(peasoup) is known in the military as "machinegun gruel" and has been a staple food for the military for centuries. I prefer using a stronger mustard for peasoup, that way the soup won't get cold. Ägg, Kaviar & knäckebröd is a common breakfast but not everyday, you'll get sick of it after a while, try liverpaste + picklad cucumbers(sliced or chewed [Boston-gurka]) on knäckebröd or simple cheese (sliced with the norwegian invention the cheese slicer), ham or salami. Good addons are for these are cheese + banana, cheese + jam, onions goes well on salami and on all three, bell peppers or tomatoes is nice. Herring is not a typical breakfast food, makrill (in tomatosauce) is probably more my cup of tea. Don't drink Swedish coffe after 15:00 or you might have trouble sleeping until midnight.
When opening the kaviar tube using the cap of the tube, you have to press it extra hard to give the kaviar the right look. I swear I can taste the diffrence even if I spread it out with a knife after.
@@chloeandludvig yeah try it , "Felix rårörda lingon" is the best storebought lingonberry jam I've tried, the taste is the most similar to homemade atleast here in my part of sweden 😊
Lingon works good with ugnspannkaka and fläskpannkaka. Wrong mustard in my opinion for the peasoup that i also found a bit to loose for my taste, thicker soup and Hultbergs mustard. But that could just be a Malmö thing ;) and next time try the eggs and caviar on toast.
I would encourage people to try making chokladbollar at home, I find them much tastier and quite different from massproduced ones. I like to eat them after they have properly "set" in the fridge and I always roll them in pärlsocker and not coconut since I enjoy the contrasting crunchy texture. I usually add in a bit more oat as well since I enjoy the flavour but if it's your first time making them be careful so you don't end up with a crumbly mess although that can be fixed with a tiny splash of water or coffee or a some softened butter. You should also be able to see the oats in there so just mix it until it comes together and they can hold a ball shape but the oats shouldn't be disintegrated. I mean if you don't think you'll like bits of oats in there just mix until they are disintegrated, they will still be delicious. Damn it, now I want to eat chokladbollar...
Hey guys! Wow! You know, much of the western world has kinda melded food dishes to the point that everyone is at least a little familiar with other Western dishes. NOT Scandinavia! Every Scandinavian food vid I see on YT brings a whole new adventure!😂 This vid has more adventures than Adventureland in Disney World! Both informative and slightly disturbing. Thank you! (Looking forward to your reception dinner menu!) Oh, and LOVE the Orange sweater, Chloe!💕
Hehe that's good to hear! Sweden (and Scandinavia as a whole) have lots of interesting concoctions! I was excited yet skepical about making this video, but I'm we got to showcase all of these foods! Thank you!! I bought a new sweater to stay warm in Sweden!!
All nordic countries have some kind of stateowned store like Systembolaget. Swedish wine ? They must be rich since winegrapes are hard to farm here so the cost 200-300 kronor (20-25 euro) 😢
Finnish food and Swedish food very similar, and yes pea soup and pancakes still on Thursday in the military. Pea soup has to have lots of onions and mustard!!
Moved from Germany to Sweden, two years ago - Sweden has probably the fewest amount of IKEA-shops worldwide😁. Even in relation to the number of citizens. Btw, eating Knäckebröd in the morning, might produce the most you here from a Swede all day
The custom ot eating peasoup and pancakes on thursdays goes back hundreds of years when the church had a lot more power. Swedes were told to be fasting on fridays for some reason so they needed a solid meal on thursdays.
We drink coffee before dinner, after dinner, because the sun is up, or because it's down. Because it's warm, or because it's cold. There's no reason not to drink coffee. 😆
Surprised you liked Kalles Kaviar, oftentimes foreigners are put off by it. Hell they even ran an ad campaign based on it describing it as "A very Swedish flavor". Albeit I suppose if you like Vegemite the saltiness isn't too overbearing.
Interesting video, thanks . At first I wasn't sure whether it was an Australian accent I was hearing, until "brickfust". 😊 Reminds me of a summer in Michigan where I worked at a summer camp. The lake side crew were NZ and I'll never forget the Americans' reaction to them asking for some "dick cheese" to relax. 😂😂
In the United States, alcohol sales regulations vary by location. Here in Maryland, current law restricts the sale to stand-alone, non-chain stores, with licensing restricted to Maryland residents. So no beer or wine at the grocery. ☹️ When we were stationed in Louisiana twenty years ago, you couldn't buy alcohol on Sunday. We got around that by going onto the military base where local laws didn't apply.
When you forget the butter on the bread, Kalle's Caviar tastes worse. Put butter on the hard bread and put just a small dab of kalles on the egg.. to begin with. Then we have lots of different hard breads for different people..We don't eat herring on hard bread like you do. We eat it on a plate with potatoes and other things. Thick pancakes have an ability to grow in the mouth and thin pancakes are hard to stop eating. Especially if you add cream, sugar and jam. Swirl a hot frying pan when you add a dollop of butter and the batter should be no more so that it just covers the stone pan. Then you get crispy tops around the entire pancake. Use grease in the pan for each cake. Don't forget to flip the cake.= (Plättan.. in Swedish)
Maybe you should try tunnbrödsrulle which is comfort food endemic to Sweden. One American that tried it was Anthony Bourdain. I knew the guy that invented it
@@chloeandludvig It is and you will find it wherever there’s street food. The guy who invented it. Loffe, had a customer who wanted something for which he had run out of ingredients. Rather than losing him, he decided to improvise. That’s how it came to be.

I've actually had, I kid you not, pointed out to me during my performance review that I need to be better at participating in fika breaks. Like as in a personal goal set by my boss. And I am Swedish. The fika is out of control in this country.
If you really want to go traditional (military officers ) you add the alcoholic drink "punsch" in a slightly warmed state to the ärtsoppa och pannkakor. :)

It's important to note that while coverage is available in urban areas, the reliability of signal reception may be limited in sea regions due to the nature of the network infrastructure.
Åh gud ägg o kaviar macka!!! ❤❤ måste jag äta imorn.
I loove knäckebröd with Vegemite! I also top the sandwich with cold meatball on top of the vegemite. An alternative is to also add Swedish beetroot salad.
Haha Ludvig is screwing up his face at the thought of that haha😆 but yum to beetroot salad
Fika is not only in the afternoon. You also have morning fika around 9 am and evening fika before going to bed :)
Add some Timjan/Thyme to the pea-soup makes it much tastier. And strong mustard ;)
Ooo thyme is so good isn't it!
Peasoup, pancakes and Punch, you guys left out the best part of the Thursday Trinity
Did love swedish meatballs. Also in stockholm there is restaurant what offers bear meatballs. It was so nice
Oh wow - I don’t know if we will try bear again haha but we love the ikea meatballs 😁
@@chloeandludvig Well stockholm bear meatball needet it sauce cause other ways it would been too ritch for my taste.
When opening the kaviar tube using the cap of the tube, you have to press it extra hard to give the kaviar the right look. I swear I can taste the diffrence even if I spread it out with a knife after.
Ludvig is a professional pancake cook! Great job guys, I get so fed up with foreigners butchering Swedish foods.
Haha Ludvig will be very happy to hear that - he’s so proud of his pancakes ;) thank you!!! I am working on my Swedish words every day haha
Oh, i didn’t mean butchering the language, but rather eating things in the wrong way. “Oh, lingonberry jam - I’m sure that’s great on toast …”
The original way to eat pea soup (ärtsoppa) is with chunks of pork in it. Tastes much better than just peas 👍
maaaan Lingonberry jam and whipped cream is my fav on panncakes :)
Really!? I will have to try that combo next time 🤩
@@chloeandludvig yeah try it , "Felix rårörda lingon" is the best storebought lingonberry jam I've tried, the taste is the most similar to homemade atleast here in my part of sweden 😊
Peasoup is also the budget meal of the week to save up for a more good after church Sunday meal.
So you were in Ängelholm! That's where I grew up! It's a super cosy town! You should've gone to "Rost" and had a hamburger! They're the absolute best!
No way! That’s awesome! We’ve been to Rost many times 😆
Im a swede and Vegemite only works on toast with like a micro thin layer, then it's actually pretty good. It works with a really hearty soup.
Pea soup and pancake date back to the Middle Ages. When we were Catholic and fasting.
Back in the day pancakes was often made with pea-flour. I wonder if there is a connection there. Using as much as u can of the harvest?
And make sure there is enough cacao in the mix... it has to be heavy on cacao to be at the top! :)
Hey guys!
In Canada, booze sales are similar to Sweden, but 75% of the cost is taxes. $70CDN for 1.75L of Absolut (Seriously!🫣)
@@BrianBorges-ez3ls Oh my!!
Hehe that's good to hear! Sweden (and Scandinavia as a whole) have lots of interesting concoctions! I was excited yet skepical about making this video, but I'm we got to showcase all of these foods! Thank you!! I bought a new sweater to stay warm in Sweden!!
How about trying palt on one of your videos - apparently it's delicious!
Ooo I just googled that - looks pretty tasty!!!
All nordic countries have some kind of stateowned store like Systembolaget.
Swedish wine ? They must be rich since winegrapes are hard to farm here so the cost 200-300 kronor (20-25 euro) 😢
Saw the egg and kaviar combo without butter and I audibly went "no, Nonono!"
Baaahahah I know what a mistake!😆
You can also eat pancakes with butter and suger !
Ooo that sounds yummy
@@chloeandludvig yeah. Its the best way to eat reheated pancakes! But also newly cooked pancakes!
I allways eat lingonbarry jam on pankakes 😁
Haha do you! Ludvig is amazed
Ingonberry works on Pankakes too.
I’ll have to try it one day 😜
Finnish food and Swedish food very similar, and yes pea soup and pancakes still on Thursday in the military. Pea soup has to have lots of onions and mustard!!
Moved from Germany to Sweden, two years ago - Sweden has probably the fewest amount of IKEA-shops worldwide😁. Even in relation to the number of citizens.
Btw, eating Knäckebröd in the morning, might produce the most you here from a Swede all day
Oh wow that’s so cool you moved there! Where abouts did you move to in Sweden? Interesting re the IKEAs!😮
@@chloeandludvig Karlshamn/Blekinge
Now im sad... the peasoup reqires senap... AND timjan. And knäckebröd med salt smör till. And some heavily wiped cream for the pancakes as an bonus.
Eating sandwiches without butter in Sweden is a no no!
Hahaha, yes we were terribly annoyed we forgot the butter!!! 😲
I think you are excused if you use a thick layer of keso on it. Don't forget the finely cut chives (gräslök) on top.
The custom ot eating peasoup and pancakes on thursdays goes back hundreds of years when the church had a lot more power. Swedes were told to be fasting on fridays for some reason so they needed a solid meal on thursdays.
In Canada we get our liquor from the Liquor store or LBCO
Ahh good to know!!
We drink coffee before dinner, after dinner, because the sun is up, or because it's down. Because it's warm, or because it's cold.
There's no reason not to drink coffee. 😆
Hahaha I love that!
Yes, in the military thet still serve pea soup and pancakes every thrusday. :D
where is sweden are you from specifically Ludvig?
Skåne - helsingborg
Kalles Kaviar goes with egg very well, but I do understand it's a bit of an acquired taste. :)
Swedish pancakes with butter, sugar and a little jam and whipped cream.
Where is the butter by now? 18:28
كان جميل جدا ومستمتع كثير وكان الاكل شهي وشخصيه جميله وكان ودي اكون في المكان الي كانو فيه 😴😂
Surprised you liked Kalles Kaviar, oftentimes foreigners are put off by it. Hell they even ran an ad campaign based on it describing it as "A very Swedish flavor". Albeit I suppose if you like Vegemite the saltiness isn't too overbearing.
I was surprised also! It had a very strong taste... but yes, I am used to Vegemite so perhaps that helped..
I love the meatballs at IKEA!
Yay!!
Wow, thanks for sharing! Super interesting - love to learn how other countries do it!
Swirl a hot frying pan when you add a dollop of butter and the batter should be no more
so that it just covers the stone pan.
I knew the guy that invented it
Ooo I just googled that! Looks delicious!!
@@chloeandludvig It is and you will find it wherever there’s street food. The guy who invented it. Loffe, had a customer who wanted something for which he had run out of ingredients. Rather than losing him, he decided to improvise. That’s how it came to be.
Il live at (or near) the place tunnbrödsrulle was invented! Stuvsta. The ”korvmoj” has a gold commemoration plaque.
@@johankaewberg8162 That’s the place. Sadly, Loffe, died some time ago. I lived near the railway station.
Yes , Would be great with Vegemite
Right? Mmmmmm Vegemite...
I was given a can of those herrings by a Swedish friend years ago, I still dry reach when I think of them! 🤢🤮 I love your videos and look forward to the next one! Cheers from Australia.
It's food for Vikings and not for weak offspring of Englishmen😂
Hehehe, the taste definitely isn't for everyone! Ludvig could eat it all day 😂 Thank you I am so glad you enjoy our videos!!
As a Swede I consent to everything, except the surströmming and the pea soup which is a no no for me :)
It would be fun to get your take on Swedish candy in a future video..
Haha, nice. Good to know ;) I would love to try some Swedish candy! Ludvig gave us kiwis a taste of liquorice a few years ago.... wasn't a fan
@@chloeandludvig Was it the Djungelvrål he gave you?
I've actually had, I kid you not, pointed out to me during my performance review that I need to be better at participating in fika breaks. Like as in a personal goal set by my boss.
And I am Swedish. The fika is out of control in this country.
Fika breaks are often informal meetings as well.
Lingon berry is very good on pankakes. Most be something only Ludvig feel .
If you really want to go traditional (military officers ) you add the alcoholic drink "punsch" in a slightly warmed state to the ärtsoppa och pannkakor. :)
I love Ikea.. i live in the USA
That's awesome! You've got lots of IKEA's over there don't you?
@@chloeandludvig yes ..like 3or 4
I live in finland and is a swedish-speaking finn, we also put chop up raw onion in are soups, and it have to be turun or auran sinappi 😂 so fucking delicious
I like to eat my pancakes with cottage cheese and strawberry jam
14:42 can we just appreciate a the shorts, good swede haha
Hahhaha good ol Ludvig
Wow, fel sida på knäckebrödet och han ska va svensk!?
Såg precis de, fan. Inge smör å baksidan av mackan. Skandal ^^
@herrkulor3771 Whaaat?? I eat herring at least 2-3 times a week for freakfast! Mostly on rye bread! It must be a regional thing.
The Kaviar is in a tube, and it's sealed. Unless the seal is broken it's fine to eat!
I lived in Sweden all my life. (39 years of life) and I been almost every where in Sweden like Stockholm, Skåne, Uppsala, Goteborg and so on and never ever had I her bulle med bulle dagen and never ever had I had chocolate ball in a normal bread. I honestly taught it was a joke and you meant Kanel bullens dag which we have. But Bulle med bulle never ever heard or eaten.
Swedish pancakes should be at least doubly as thick as crêpes. Crêpes should be as thin as possible.
Im surpriced you actually tried surströmming, most Swedes do not like it all and i mean like 99% of us so good job :)
I did indeed! And yes I feel very proud... I don't know many swedes that have even tried it haha
