You gotta love Jay! He not only saves some of the most incredible classics ever built from oblivion, He also restores some & pampers his collection. Most importantly though...HE DRIVES THEM. It don't matter to him if it's a $5,000 car or a $500,000 car, you gotta get them out of the garage or museum & get them on the road & that you gotta respect.
Cars are meant to be driven! He has the right idea with his MASSIVE collection! I wonder what will happen to them when the inevitable happens, hopefully many many years from now. His parents lived well in to their 80’s from mentions in other episodes.
If kids today can’t drive a simple manual transmission, who in the hell will know how to start up up any of these classic cars? Spark, retard, clutch, oiler, hand brakes? Wait can I even use the word retard without getting stoned by the PC police?
Jay is a true *steward* of the hobby - he willingly takes on the responsibility of properly restoring, caring for and sharing his cars with all of us and does so the right way, at every opportunity. The cars - and the history they represent - are served well by him; it's true bucket list stuff to dream of visiting his shop one day. -Ed on the Ridge
Comon they're from the late '90s and early 2000s i don't see 80s cars anywhere there; except for just one late 80s Chrysler Diplomat driving next to Jay's car and that's it, the rest are alien 👽 mobiles like today's ugly garbage 🗑️ cans on wheels jajaja
Dennis thank you soo much for this video, PRICELESS! Enjoyed the entire 33 minutes. My 2 favorite car guys in the same video. It's crazy to think this was shot 21 years ago...looks like it was done just yesterday. The passage of time...what a wonder. The Doosie is gorgeous- beauty personified I'd say. I love you guys & love your channels. Keep up the awesome work! Godspeed my brother
Jay Leno, Dennis Gage, and Alain De Cadenet are in my opinion, the most revered collectors, preservationists and television hosts, in the history of automotive videos! Excellent Work Gentlemen!!
Wonder how many of the cars around them on the road that day, are still running? Not many I'll bet. It's a perspective though. The great thing about this is that it feels like it could've been recorded last week!
Don't compare people that drive their cars everyday to work, plus have limited amount of money to maintain them. To a guy that is a millionaire, has a team of mechanics that keeps the cars in great condition. Plus cars that don't drive that often compared to an everyday car.
@@The_Curious_Cat That's pretty much the perspective I'm thinking of. Albeit that the over engineering of a Duesenberg doesn't compare to any car built in many years...
this is best video I have seen of Jay driving one of his old cars, really got feel for how capable this car was for it's time, even better than a few of todays cars in some ways, obviously much more beautiful and with tons ;-) more presence than anything from today
@@Karmy. Yeah, that Corolla is an amazing car ;-) Scarcasm aside, I love Corollas as much as antique cars. Corollas are great cars, offer so much bang for the buck. Generally speaking I love cars of all kinds.
I noticed the same thing! So many small trucks, and cars for that matter. Only one large pick up. Also, able to drive 70 on an LA freeway. Last thing, Jay must have forgotten to to take off his sport coat when leaving the Tonight Show. Never saw that again.
Love to hear two knowledgeable car guys just talk about cars. Oh...... How I'd love to own one. Such a Duesey! I've been drooling at a spectacular Duesenberg SJ two seat roadster (The type Jay mentions on this video) at a museum in Phoenix, Arizona. BY FAR, THE GREATEST AUTOMOBILE EVER BUILT!
Jay takes a limited number of people on rides in his cars, at least from what I've seen on videos. This is the first time I've ever seen him offer anyone to drive any of them and one of his Duesenbergs no less. But then Dennis is a car legend all his own so it makes total sense.
@Modern Classic Collectables Yes, but the stylization seems more on par with TH-cam to me. For example, the Jay Leno's Garage episodes that air on television are very different, and usually worse, than the TH-cam ones.
Heh. Around the 31:45 minute mark you will see two Lebarons in one shot. The other being a 1980 model or there abouts. That's pretty neat. Outstanding video by the way, Dennis.
I watched Jay pull the starter , adjust the spark, and finally, the car started. You actually had to have some sort of skill that has been lost over the decades. Imagine someone trying to figure out how to start it, who was used to fuel injection and automatic transmissions, a car that does all the work Jay did.
He has now got something like 300 cars and motor cycles. Can you imagine remembering all those gear patterns? Not to mention every vehicle has it's own personality.
@@brucelee9941 California would be different and having them non-op costs money later so i imagine he uses the antique plate route and just registers them all.
question ,,,,, at 4:56 , there are 6 spark plugs into the firewall , are they just there for extras , to not lose them or what ? just curious . and LOVE all your videos !
I hate to reveal my ignorance but at about 2:46 they’re looking at the 31 Bentley and mentioned that it has no head! How do you seal off the combustion chambers if there’s no head?
What road? 19:25 Large sections of the Lincoln Highway were newly paved by 1926. And very few (comparatively) autos were on the road at that time. I'm sure plenty of 'Doozy' owners were able to 'let 'em' out' on the Lincoln back then!
The courage Jay have to take those cars outside...just like expensive jewelry! Specially in America when you can watch a car chase on a daily basis on TV......

Absolutely
He's simply the best at all he does.
Jay really is a wealth of knowledge, and kind of a national treasure.
National?
international
Scotty Kilmer too.
Epic, almost 21 year old footage and it looks like it happened just the other day!
Jay is always a class act! Thank you for sharing and saving these classics one at a time.
Been watching Jay Leno's garage and my classic cars since the SPEED channel days in early '90s.
Funny how Jay was talking about the same exact things in this video as he did he on his video about this car over 20 years later 😀 Cool throwback
Caprice #1
Jay does what the builders expected. He drives these cars. Love it.
Jay is awesome, his knowledge of old cars is unmatched by anyone that people find interesting.
One of the nice thing of the internet is you can see thing you otherwise never should see. Thanks for Holland for this video!
Now, he’s wearing the the old man jumpsuit. I love you Jay, and all your cars and motorcycles
Canadian tuxedo

What a treat to go for a ride with Jay. Thank you for that!! You made my day!!
It's crazy seeing a bunch of 80's vehicles on the road and in parking lots. Great footage!
This was recorded in 2000 but I know what you mean. Footage this high quality from 20 years ago is crazy cool

Jay Leno is friggin goals man, I love this guy so much
The Humphrey Bogart movie Jay was referring to is 1937s “Black Legion.”
Fantastic. I love this interaction with Jay and this speck of his collection.
I’m surprised more people don’t recognize him and honk their horn etc. Beautiful car!
Two legends and a magnificent machine!
Did you guys catch that old sky blue Ford Fairmont that drove by at 15:10??
I like that Jay actually waived at people.
Jay Leni is a top guy...never miss watching his brilliant videos.....the guy is 101% enthusiast and knowledgeable
Love the walk down memory lane
Love the fact that Jay actually drives his cars. Neat upload, guys.
It's absolutely stunning to me that this was 1929. It sounds like "Yes. Keep it at 70 and I'm gonna do this all day." ... In 1930. Crazy.
Thanks for this Dennis ! PRICELESS !
Glad you enjoyed it!
look at all the 80s' and 90's cars and trucks rolling around back then. a totaly different scene brings back memories.. very cool vid
I have to put a towel on my lap (drool) when I’m watching Jay’s automobile collection… another great episode Jay 👍
Awesome to be able to collect the nicest cars in the world, a dream come true for Jay I’m sure. Awesome cars, thanks for sharing.
GadZooks man, I got choked up there on the highway drive for some reason?!
Thank you for years and years of ART in METAL!
I can't imagine how much car knowledge and fun between these 2. Very cool 👍🏁

nice hiway speed run, the sound with the top down , so smooth
Very cool to see Jay's shop with bare walls. How things have changed.
Back, in the good ol' days....
Thank you guys for the ride along what a marvelous piece of equipment.
Jay Leno, Dennis Gage, and Alain De Cadenet are in my opinion, the most revered collectors, preservationists and television hosts, in the history of automotive videos! Excellent Work Gentlemen!!

I've never seen someone actualy drive their Duesenberg as fast as Jay still drives his.
Sounds like it loves it!

Breath taking machine!!
Just beautiful,👍
Jay Leno really cracks me up. Such a funny guy.

I was surprised how it went it had no trouble going with modern cars.
Was kinda wild seeing it keeping up with a Corolla on the freeway
@@Karmy. Yeah, that Corolla is an amazing car ;-) Scarcasm aside, I love Corollas as much as antique cars. Corollas are great cars, offer so much bang for the buck. Generally speaking I love cars of all kinds.
It is weird not seeing Jay in his denim shirt and jeans
it is an all blue suit though lol
Omg Jay is 49 here the same age as me! He had already achieved so much
In terms of driving various vehicles, Jay has to be the most experienced driver in the world
Love your show man. I always enjoy jays cars no matter how many times I see them
Jay doesn't usually get that angle looking down the highway, they really are booking it in that car.
Very impressive highway performance.
Dennis never ages!
I'm blown away by this car. I can't believe the acceleration. Very cool
WOW! is the only word that describes this beaut! =even today it looks fast, a truly great car! don't ever change Jay!
COOL Jay Leno's Car Collection | The Early Days at Jay's
Note all the little mini pickups, as compared to all the huge pickups on the road today. Thanks for a blast from the past Dennis.
You bet!

Beautiful classic cars in Jays collection! 😘😀 Mike from Missouri
Wow please upload more early 2000s footage. This is great
That's the plan!
Thank You For Posting!

Amazing footage
Thanks!
That Dussie loves to run 👍
It would be a dream to go spend the day at Jay's garage.
It's pretty cool!
This feels so much like the TH-cam channel, it's hard to believe this was made before TH-cam.
Exactly. The only thing missing is Jay's "Canadian Tuxedo", denim on denim.
@Modern Classic Collectables Yes, but the stylization seems more on par with TH-cam to me. For example, the Jay Leno's Garage episodes that air on television are very different, and usually worse, than the TH-cam ones.
So much better quality and content not to mention people before TH-cam.
Aww, look how young they look! Interesting seeing the same cars he’s reviewed recently on his show 20 years ago.
What a BEAUTY.
Heh. Around the 31:45 minute mark you will see two Lebarons in one shot. The other being a 1980 model or there abouts. That's pretty neat. Outstanding video by the way, Dennis.
There's not one LeBaron from 30:30 to 32:45....
wow, back when you both had darkish hair left!
Amazing to think that every car in traffic in the background is probably in the junkyard or on craigslist for less than $2k now.
Yeah
The Dusey will be around 100 years from now
Can there honestly be a cooler guy than Jay Leno owning such cool cars 👌👌👌
Look 70mph lol more like 85 - 90mph, that beaut was flying 👌👌👌
My god that thing is beautiful.
Jay talking about modern gas. Farm gas when I was a kid in the 90s was incredible. 5 years and you could drive on it. Run rough but still ran.
Just magnificent!
Jay has exquisite taste in vehicles.
One of coolest LG videos in the back seat wind in yurface experience-----way cool
Can you imagine how much fun the cameraman was having on the drive?
Best. What a delight.
Welp. The coolest thing I've seen.
This is why I love deusenberg
I remember as a kid in the ‘60s making a plastic model kit from either ‘ Monogram’ or ‘Aurora’ of a Deusenberg

Great stuff from a great channel
Thank you for this!
The Dusenberg was a car ahead of his time in design and engine performance. It was the toy car for Al Capone and some Hollywood stars..
Jay cleans up nicely.!
Well, this was shot over 20 years ago so that might have something to do with it.
I wish you had driven the Duesenberg with the lights on also I feel wide whitewall tires show the car off more . Wish it was mine
Where does the guy sitting at the back disappear to when we see the exterior shots
For those shots the chase/camera car radioed them and he crawled back up into his GoPro case to hide
What bogey movie was that? Strictly airplane type. Love it
Kept waiting for the comment about going to the proctologist for dental work.
oOOO one of my favorite cars...put together a Revell plastic model kit...
..about the wheel base of a Peterbuilt or KW?
Keeping up with all the licensing, registration and insurance on all Jay's cars must be a full time job for someone.
I restore cars and usually collectors get a dealers license to drive with 1 plate or use a dealer printed tag.
@@brucelee9941 California would be different and having them non-op costs money later so i imagine he uses the antique plate route and just registers them all.
Jay looks like retirement agrees. Good man.
This was shot in 2001.
Wow, Cool
That Duesenberg was the Bugatti of its time. Amazing speed.
question ,,,,, at 4:56 , there are 6 spark plugs into the firewall , are they just there for extras , to not lose them or what ? just curious . and LOVE all your videos !
Spark plugs fouled frequently back then and it was common to carry a spare set.
