I worked at Jim Rathman Chevrolet, the dealership that was responsible for supplying all of the astronauts with their Corvettes. I only met a few, but having grown up in the shadow of the Kennedy space center, I meant many more at school and in local parades. They were Rock stars!
Ilived in Cocoa at the time. I was in elementary school and my dad worked at Grumman at KSC. I remember Jim Rathman's.
I've read that the local police could recognize the astronauts' Corvettes and wouldn't pull them over.
Not 100% sure, but didn't 1 astronaut forgo the Corvette & got a Mustang??

The real North American X-15 rocketplane (that's a static mock-up in the video) flew to a peak altitude of 354,000 feet in 1962, and the speed flights from Nevada took six-to-eight minutes, not two. Surprised the Vice Commander of the 412th Test Wing at Edwards AFB didn't know that!
Edwards AFB to Downtown LA is about 100 miles. It's possible that the Colonel was referring to the same speed at ground level vs. 354k feet? I'm surprised you didn't think of that!
The X-15's top operational speed recorded is 4,520mph. That's 75 miles per minute. It's 90 miles from EAF to downtown LA. So it would actually take a little over 1 minute. Surprised you didn't know that!
