    So good to hear a guitarist eliminating compression unlike most, get so tired of hearing the same tone out of everyone.

  • @mmmatthewww
    @mmmatthewww 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Boy Howdy do I ever agree with Josh's comment about compression. That explains clearly exactly my sentiments about compression. I've tried any number of times to embrace compression, but it does seem to negate nuance that you would otherwise have to control with your fingers and picking attack. Losing that control just feels weird and unnatural. Compression sucks some of the life and effervescence out of music. It's like drinking soda pop that's gone slightly flat, it still tastes good, but it's lacking that zing.

      Recent trend ? Light gauges being utilized has been around for a long time by the greats

    • @mariodriessen9740
      @mariodriessen9740 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@a-aron3775 : Absolutely. Trends come and go. But this is a comment I wrote four years ago. And four years ago there was this online debate going on among content creators like Rick Beato, Rhett Shull and many others who came to the conclusion that using lighter gauge strings will provide you with better tone. Apparently it was David Friedman who stated this as a fact and this started a debate, like I mentioned before. But I for one never found their experiments very convincing. For various different reasons. Not only is the quality of sound a very subjective matter, but things like ‘feel’ and personal preference, or stability (like tuning issues) weren’t part of the debate. I’m not the youngest and I spent years of searching for the best set of strings for me.
      Anyway, lots of content creators, but also established artists joined the bandwagon and many of them started to use lighter gauge strings. At the time Josh Smith was a well respected guitarist and became better known with a wider audience. But as we all know, he uses very heavy strings and unless I missed something, he still does.
      But there have always been guitarists that were known to use very heavy strings (SRV, Dick Dale, Rick Parfitt) and there have always been guitarists that were known to use very light strings (Billy Gibbons, Tony Iommi, Frank Zappa), so indeed, there’s nothing new. But like I said, there are trends. I remember when Stevie Ray Vaughan became an established artist, guitarists from all over the world started to experiment with using heavier strings. And four years ago the trend was quite the opposite, hence my comment. 😊

    Top 5 RR IMO. 13-58's in standard? Whoa, and he's not flexing. You can tell he genuinely likes and wants that feel. And when he played the strat with the soloist pedal - I haven't wanted to run out and buy a pedal like that in a long time. Great work as always by JB, well done, I learned a lot on this one and added some items to my birthday list.

    Watched him grow up and gig in Fort Lauderdale, Fl with many premier players, I think he was 12 the first time I saw him. Spoke with him a few times and I must say he has alway been a dedicated musician and truly deserves being recognized as one of the worlds greatest guitarist.

    Found out about the tchula from Josh, and it is heaven for me. Not for everyone for sure, but I go for the same uncompressed goal, so I can control dynamics . though I have 1/100th of his control (and less of his pure talent) I love hearing and feeling that dynamic response and trying to aspire to develop that control.
    I wish I had more of a chance to turn up for medium to large gig volume, as that is where it really shines, but my large gigging days are pretty much over. Ah well.

    Asking Josh Smith if he keeps the strat around to change to if he breaks a string is one of the most embarrassing questions ever.
