    One challenge I might as well suggest for this: Shade: The Rusical. This was the first musical challenge where they had to sing live (I think partly to highlight trained singers Courtney Act and Adore Delano). Then in the actual challenge, no one did particularly "bad", I'd argue. And then we get to the two who were actually in the bottom : April Carrion and Trinity K. Bonet. TKB, I'd say, did soso in the challenge at best, as best as she could when paired up next to the force of personality that is Bianca Del Rio. Bianca's singing is... fine, but she was able to use her personality and all to camp her character up. And then Trinity, who had one of the quietest personalities in it up to then, got paired up next to her? And then we get to April, who was forced to play the "big girl" archetype and had to wear a fat suit during the performance (due to her being, well, not a plus-sized person). First off, why was "big girl" even a character in this, when that kind of label is admittedly degrading. Second off, if they were insistent on someone playing that role, why give it to someone who's pretty small and couldn't fit that? I mean, what would've happened if they actually HAD a "big girl" in the cas- oh hi Darienne Lake! And third, she was critiqued for not being able to portray a "big girl" well. But, again, SHE'S NOT THAT! So for the bottom placements being pretty questionable (especially with one of them being there for playing a possibly offensive stereotype character that she’d have a hard time playing due to not being the right body type) and everyone doing fine for the most part, they probably didn't need to have a bottom 2 there.

    • @lonelyjesse85
      @lonelyjesse85 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      I'd also say that "you didn't have the attitude a big girl has" as a critique was highly problematic. It is reducing big queens to one stereotypical personality

      also, why was trinity in the bottom two instead of gia? even if you pretend the critiques of april's performance make any sense, gia was so offkey she was unintentionally harmonizing sometimes. trinity's biggest crime is...being overshadowed by bianca del rio? as if most quieter queens, scratch that most queens period, wouldn't do the same?

    Another one I'd actually include, mostly, because of how unfair it was is the Despy Awards on season 7. Having the queens in pairs present a category is fine and not unfair, BUT the winners and top placement were judged in pairs and then they proceed to judge the rest of the teams individually? How does this make sense? Not only that, but some queens had additional time to be funny, since they won their categories, like Fame, Violet and Jaidynn. The bottom 2 of the episode (Kasha and Kandy), didn't have that chance. The challenge itself is a nice idea, but should've been more thought out, it just looked all over the place.

    • @iitsnoee

    • @merchantmahogany
      @merchantmahogany 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      i was just thinking this when i was speculating on how i'd judge this season! i'm pretty sure it was only judged that way so 1) pearl could get a win for her story and 2) no queens the show deemed 'important' would be eliminated.
      and the moment where the judges straight up say that queens shouldn't be put lower for not giving their partners any good jokes made this even more confusing: is this or is this not a collaborative effort? even in the winning pair the balance of jokes is really uneven.
      if this was a segment in the finale where the top 3/4 gave these awards to the eliminated queens, or maybe if winners didn't also host, it'd make more sense. as is, i love the idea of the despys, but the judging is borderline arbitrary.

    • @JoaoGabriel-tx7bm
      @JoaoGabriel-tx7bm 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@merchantmahogany I actually agreed with the win for Pearl/Max (no pair slayed this challenge though). They did the best imo, but the right thing to do would be judge everyone in pairs. In that case though, the bottom 2 would probably be Fame and Violet and we know the show didn't want to lose neither of them. I think this challenge should've happen later on, at top 5 or 6 and be an individual challenge. Each queen would host a category and the nominees would be the eliminated queens, then the winners could do a funny speech that wouldn't affect the main challenge.

    • @heymistercarter.
      @heymistercarter. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      And then Mrs. Kasha Davis gets eliminated for tripping over the word “welcome” for a second. She’d been doing so well up to then, and she gets the chop. There’s a reason people have been asking for her to be back on, let’s just say.

    • @c.k.8585

    I don’t know if Peppermint was injured in the Cheerleading episode, but I know she told the story about how she used to be a cheerleader in high school. Her friends on the squad would talk about basketball players and ask her opinion, and Peppermint would just say “Oh sure, he’s cute” but never anything vulgar or in poor taste. Unfortunately, even those innocuous statements got the basketball players’ attention and they beat her up when she was alone. She went to the school office injured and told them what happened, and saw that her friends from the cheerleading squad were waiting outside, crying, and desperate to hug her and console her.

      Thankfully Peppermint has a rather positive attitude. She says she remembers that day because she felt so much love from her friends, and they basically protected her from that day forward. Even her friends’ friends from the same school were on her side. I imagine even if the basketball team did not face repercussions from the school itself… they probably could not date anyone at their school after that incident because of Peppermint’s likability.

    One recent challenge you could argue that there couldn't have been a Bottom 2 for was the Super-Teaser challenge on Season 14. That was a challenge where it was shown they recorded quite a lot of material for, but not all of it made it into the final cut. There were even some good performances and jokes that were cut from the final video, namely Maddy's bit about coming out as straight to her dads (even though it was partly a setup for Daya's "I'm Straight Too!" bit, which made the final cut). And then we have the bottom 3, KornBread, Alyssa, and Kerri. Two of them, KornBread and Alyssa, were in the bottom for relying too much on stereotype jokes (KornBread leaning into plus-sized girls who focus a lot on food, and Alyssa playing a loud-mouthed and over-the-top character for whom English isn't their first language), which the show itself has edited DA's into those archetypes before. So would playing those archetypes in a mock trailer for a Drag Race season really be a detriment, especially when those archetypes have been done on the show before? And then Kerri, whose bottom placement has been criticized since it happened, is put in the bottom for relying too much on pretty and not being over-the-top at times... even though the final cut included other bits which weren't her trying to be pretty (namely her bit with KornBread of telling Jasmine to shut up). So for a challenge where the producers and editors can give a final performance any way they wanted with the large amount of material provided to them, and the final selections for the bottom being pretty questionable, you really could argue that there didn't need to be a Bottom 2 for that.

    i would also include challenges like the divas night thing on all stars 3 or baddest bitch in herstory in all stars 2 because they are not giving a chance to the queens to present how they want to. Thorgy said even in confessional that she will be screwed and then Michele told her that if she would let go of the idea who she was portraying it would be better but i don’t see how this would help her given that her part was slower then rest and choreography was consequently less dynamic and those things most of the time play into the weaknesses but i know that those challenges are to push the story forward in the direction that producers want

  • @mxsasha

    I do agree what was shown but i also think it should be included every challenge that has the intention of making the queens "be vulnerable", some examples that come to mind now are "evil twin challenge" on s10, "pink table talk" and "show up queen" on as6. The queens should have the right to talk about their personal stories if they want to, in the end of the day, that's a big platform to share it. Those type of challenges don't judge them on a skill/ability like the others but on how the queen *told* the story the producers wanted them to... Put to judgement your own traumas shouldn't be okay and it's not.

    While we're on the topic of challenges that shouldn't exist, can I also bring to the table a good challenge that got mangled and screwed over.
    The s13 political challenge
    There isn't anything to be taken away from it as the viewer if the queens are being suppressed from expressing any actual political statement and being chasticized for making their jokes more intellectual/referential (Widow Vondu). Cool we have an improv challenge with a bunch of nonsense and haha they're just like the clowns in the white house. But when you completely alienate the spoof from the source material, what is the point?
    Its fodder for people who refuse to participate in politics, don't attempt to make a change, and laugh at the ones putting in the effort, rather than actually stipulate people to vote and become involved.
    The political debate challenge in season 4 did have a very similar basis; improvise answers based on your character. But the big difference is that people that actually used humour and wit NOT just absurdity were given merit, while Chad Michaels, someone who did not give a clear stance for their character, was called out for dancing around the subject.
    Almost every queen in the s13 debate was a Chad Michaels. The producers/writers didn't just allow them to beat around the bush, they were most likely told that was the requirement for it, and to me it's nonsense to distance a challenge about politics from any actual politics.
    Thank you for reading my Ted Talk.

    I think out of all of Drag Race's run, there's only been one challenge where I thought everyone did amazing, and that was the Despy Awards in season 7. Everyone killed it, the only thing that made the bottom 2 happen is kasha stuttered once and Kandy wasn't as funny, but they were still great. The runways that episode were also good, not memorable but like they were solidly good runways.

    I know this is an older video and Dragula was mentioned for like a second at the end, but I do think a big difference between Dragula's crazy challenges vs Drag Race is that the ghouls know what they're getting themselves into, like more or less they know they'll be in absolutely nuts scenarios, whereas with Drag Race it's not normal to have a challenge that can do actual physical harm to your body, therefore they can't exactly be prepared for the fuckery that is happening

    Okay, I love your videos, I watch all of them, and have supported you for a couple of years now.
    Stop dragging the cheerleading challenge, or at least, stop dragging it as hard as you always have.
    I’m a competitive cheerleader, and a coach. I’ve been training from the age of 16, and coaching from the age of 21. The challenge did not ask anything of the girls, that I couldn’t teach any able-bodied person in a day. You do not need to be 2-7 years old to start to learn how to do a cartwheel or a forward roll safely, any able-bodied person can learn that. There were no skills asked of them that were not safe for them to do, the only exception to that, is Charlie. I wouldn’t encourage anyone over 50, unless in peak physical condition for their age, to take part in cheerleading.
    All of the stunting performed, was the most base end possible of each version of that skill, as was the tumbling, with the exception of Shea performing a walkover, which she would of had to of known how to do well before coming to drag race.
    While we’re at it, Eureka was not performing a skill that any cheerleader is even allowed to perform in a routine, as it’s not safe. I’m willing to put money on it that Eureka was just so focused on standing out, that she decided that was the trick she was going to whip out for a wow factor. I highly doubt Eureka had ever performed that skill on a sprung floor before, and that is the exact reason she injured herself, the recoil from the floor. No coach present that day would have recommended she do that skill. It is not a cheerleading skill, or trick.
    I would really REALLY appreciate it, if you could stop dragging this challenge so hard, when you have absolutely zero understanding of cheerleading/gymnastics and stunting or tumbling. Almost every time you talk about this challenge you always say something that reflects badly on cheer, and it’s generally not even based on accurate fact. Stop, please. 🙏
    While we’re at it, I learnt to tumble at 23, from scratch. You don’t need to be an infant to learn your fundamentals and basics to get to your elite skills, let alone the most basic of them.
    Again, love you and your videos, and your growth as a TH-camr. Stooooooppp, please 🙏

      @uckeylee  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Interesting piece of intel, but I did not base my opinion on the challenge on nothing, but rather by talking to people who have experience in both sports I formed my thoughts. Furthermore, my point in the original video, and in this one as well, is that it's not an equal opportunity challenge, not everyone by design is going to do well. Bigger queens like Eureka, Peppermint and Jaymes to an extent, or someone in their 40s like Charlie in this challenge are never in the top. Let's not forget about the risk factor (which, again, is a real thing as we saw 3 people get injured in the challenge -- Eureka for something she did on her own, Cynthia and Charlie for something they did within the routine).
      Somebody might come with a comparison to other skills like singing, dancing etc., but like I said in the video, if you can "ham it up", you will more often than not be fine. Having a specific talent doesn't mandatorily mean that you're going to do well in a challenge related to the talent -- just look at Jujubee in season 2 in the singing challenge.
      So, thank you for your input, but one person's experience compared to what happened on the show and compared to many more different takes from people that are also in the same field won't make me stop talking about the challenge.
