61yo here. Ditto. Formative years were the 1970s, but just caught the Roses at the end of my delayed & extended university period. Last blaze of freedom. Now, I see him as an exceptional person. Sees the world differently from most of us. Look at his lyrics. That’s not a commonplace view of things. He’s special, in a good way. He looks like he’s always found life a bit tough, just existing is hard if you need meaning. But I do think he has an appreciation most of us do not: we’re subliminally aware of that ability, and in awe of it.
How is he a genius ? Nothing he has done is a match for real genius. Yes, he's charismatic, but there are thousands of musical artists who write far better lyrics and music
