Down, Up, and Out Paria Canyon: Paria Plateau Loop Hike (2022)

  • Follow along as I hike down Paria Canyon from Buckskin Gulch for several days before doing a semi-sketchy climb out at the Bush Head "Escape Route". This is part 2 of my nine-day Paria Plateau backpacking adventure and highlights include the towering walls of the sinuous canyon, Wrather Arch, Big Spring, Shower Spring, and some interesting creatures.
    Note: hiking here requires an advanced permit and one must carry a wag bag. please minimize impact and #LeaveNoTrace.

    most excellent video and good job capturing the planet....I got a big chuckle out of your chuckle as you introduced your tired and shabby tent.. it reminded me of a sea burial my grandmother made me do on a cruise to Italy..we said goodby to my 14 year old brown leather cowboy boots.. it was a comical yet sad farewell to them as i launched them overboard one night, and i obviously still remember them from time to time.. so VIVA LA CARPA!

      Yeah -- I admit I used to laugh at a few friends who said they hiked in Crocs, but now I'm a believer (in some situations). Great job - I've never hiked any part of the Paria, so this was so cool on all levels 😃! I would absolutely take the side trip to see that amazing arch, and it's cool that you found that small petroglyph panel even though it wasn't the official Bighorn Panel you thought. After watching your video, I of course had to do a fly-over on Google Earth.
    I have to admit that seeing you do that climb out I almost wanted to puke; I've done quasi-similar things on day hikes and scared the crap out of myself. I've never hiked in Crocs, but I always bring some type of camp shoe/sandal along on backpacking, and have hiked significant portions of the Escalante Route in GCNP in Tevas once, including through the Redwall break section, about 20 years ago. It was because of severe heel blisters I had from my hiking boots 😬.
    Was hugely grateful for amphibious shoes on the ill-fated Hayduke shakedown trip I did in '15 down Muley Twist/Hall's Creek Narrows - the rocks and sand are a complete NIGHTMARE when hiking through water in boots or closed shoes.
    I'm curious: have you ever hiked in trail running shoes? I switched to those for backpacking in 2015, I think, and would never go back to boots again.
    Anyway, I'm so glad you made it up out of that sketchy climb section with no injuries or loss of equipment, and I'm excited to see your next installment 👍🏻.

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Yes GE is a great planning tool and even though this route up/out does require one to go slowly and be careful, it really is NOT as bad as it looks on video. I've dayhiked in running shoes and have considered them for backpacking but have never taken the plunge as I'm wary of strain on my ankles especially when doing off-trail descents. Someday I'll give it a try for a shorter trip. Thanks again for watching! 😀👍

    Wow! Each new video is better and better. The shots you take could be used for postcards. You ought to calculate how many miles you walk back to retrieve the camera after getting a shot of you walking AWAY from the camera. Tough on your legs but makes great video. On seeing that climb I wonder why you just didn't walk all the way to Lee's Ferry and call an Uber. Beautiful, can't wait for more, especially as this year I didn't travel. Thanks!!!

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I have calculated in the past that I walk an extra 10-20% over the stated mileage for established routes -- so that includes all my walking back and forth for video, walking around camp, and short side excursions -- it does add up! If I'd gone to Lees Ferry I would have missed all the cool stuff on the Plateau that I'll show off in the next two episodes! Thanks again for watching. 🌞👍

    19:29 Do you think crocs would be a good alternative for something like the Zion Narrows where it's lots of water hiking but less small rocks? I've always done it in tennis shoes to avoid the concrete boot problem but I was wondering if there was a good cheap alternative like crocs.

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually -- I don't think so, just because in the Narrows there's more water and the footing is much worse due to all the submerged rocks. The Paria worked because most of the time I was on the sand or in very shallow water. Tennis shoes really might be the best option for the Narrows (I think that's what I've always worn there.) I think the mic might be going bad on your camera. It just does not sound as clear as your past videos from other years. It sounds more muffled. What do you think?

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh man... long story, but I've had so many struggles with audio! The 360-degree camera which I use frequently is known for having really bad mics in general and they are very susceptible to wind noise. And this was a WINDY trip! I actually also took two different external mic solutions on this trip. I used them a bit, but in general they were just too cumbersome and slowed me down too much. Another problem is that I don't listen to the sound while recording so there were times I didn't realize until afterwards that the wind was worse than I thought. Much of the raw audio was borderline unusable, but I purchased some audio processing software which helps "save" bad audio. It actually helps a lot, but the trade-off is that the final product is that processed/muddy sound (but IMHO that's better than unintelligible in the wind.) Good news is that I made some changes and I think the audio for my upcoming Zion to Green River series will be a bit better (though still not perfect.) Thanks for watching... and listening! 😉👍

      @@chillpill83 It can really vary drastically from week to week that time of year. For me it was actually quite pleasant, but a few days after I left it actually snowed in the area. I'd say be prepared for overnight temps near freezing, but if they are lucky it won't get that cold (closer to low 40s probably.) ✌

    Beautiful scenes. What kind of camera did you use for that film?

      Thanks! I used three different cameras on this hike, but it's the Insta360 camera that creates the unique perspectives. Because it captures all directions at all times it allows me to change the POV during the editing process. It's not as high quality as a traditional camera, but I love the unique/flexible shots which help tell the story. I also used my phone (Google Pixel) and a small action camera. Thanks for watching and the comment! 🌞✌
