    Road romance movies are admittedly,some of my favorites for the simple fact we get to know these two characters in all their stages and how they function together before we even get a romance. Such a backstage lends itself to sole focus on this couple and by the end,their relationship feels more than credible. Love this movie!

    I am a Bette Davis fan, but I feel Claudette did deserve her Best Actress win for her performance in It Happened One Night. Thank you for putting her performance and her win in context of time period as you do visually well.
    Also, I hope you will still drop videos on TH-cam. Nebula sounds great, but I worry about affordability a lot, even though I do support content creators having a say in their creations more.

    • @TheSongwritingCat
      @TheSongwritingCat ปีที่แล้ว +5

      We devalue comedies. Colbert deserved her Oscar. Doing the most acting isn't the same as doing the best acting.

    • @outinsider
      @outinsider ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @TheSongwritingCat I agree that we devalue comedies and that Colbert deserved her Oscar. I disagree that Bette Davis did the most acting versus Claudette Colbert, who did the best acting. If they were both able to achieve character, then they both acted.
      We think a key monologue or dialogue or great makeup and accents define a great performance. But, an accent is an actor's choice and actors can achieve character without an accent. Key monologues and dialogues are defined by screenwriters. Make up is make up. A director influences all these choices. An actor brings a performance based on tools they have to create a character.
      Davis and Colbert acted their parts as best as they could. The Academy's preference was their preference.

      It’s usually the case that the older works do better and then later iterations misinterpret what made them work. For instance, I think some of the best Manic Pixie Dream Girls were in Bringing Up Baby and My Man Godfrey because the women are still characters, whereas the ones that helped coin the term from movies that came out in the last 30 years drop everything for the male lead, even on their death bed, and the a story goes with it because she brightens up the man’s life

    I love this movie, and Colbert's performance. I'm always extra fascinated by those "accidental" hits where the filmmakers and actors didn't even feel like they were making a great film, and it all felt like a rush job. I also love that you touched on the audience identification aspect this movie has and how it connects with the audiences particularly in the Depression. That's always been one of my favorite parts of this movie - seeing America through the lens of someone who never gets to see what it's really like. The journey is the most interesting part, not the love story (as charming as it is). Phenomenal work as always!

From what I know she was a really interesting woman, and a very worthy subject for a deep dive. Jean Harrington is such a fabulous character and Stany is at peak Stanyness here. And it's always so funny to me how Henry Fonda basically cloned himself to make Jane. Watching scenes with both of them was both a treat and a trip.
    Anyways, great video as ever.

    I think the Oscars sweep for "It Happened One Night" was due to its enormous popularity with the public and its relevance to Depression era Americans--it contains some really beautiful depictions of ordinary people thrown together (like the singalong on the bus, or the ladies in the shower line at the motel) and it, like many Capra films, upheld simple American values and ideas. The chemistry between Colbert and Gable is truly magical. The other contenders for Best Actress were formidable--but Grace Moore was an opera singer, and "Of Human Bondage" and "Barretts of Wimpole Street" are films based on British source material and perhaps not as relatable for audiences of the time.

It Happened One Night was one of my favourite movies when I was a kid and I probably have watched it at least a dozen times as an adult and I find like The Lady Eve and His Girl Friday, it holds up on multiple views. Gable and Colbert had terrific chemistry and hearing how the original story was adapted to make the characters more sympathetic was interesting. Those changes really were so effective. I think Myrna Loy would have been terrific in this as she had such a gift for smart dialogue but Colbert really gift here is that you can buy her as smart but totally out of her depths at any given moment and I think Loy has competence that might not have translated.

    Fantastic as usual. My issue with Nebula is that I already pay for a TH-cam premium subscription for my family, as honestly TH-cam is my main source for content these days and has basically unlimited topics and content, and the fee I pay gives me ad-free access.
    But I always wonder if any of it helps creators at all, or just TH-cam’s bottom line.
    So I also support some channels via channel memberships or Patreon, and adding Nebula to all of that is an expense I don’t want to add because not all TH-cam creators are there.
    Having said that, this channel is magnificent and an example of the high quality possible in this medium.
    Good luck and I envy those with access to any extra content in Nebula from your channel, I think they will find it absolutely worth the small yearly fee.

    Thank you. Have watched IH1Night dozens of times over the past 40+ years, and have always enjoyed the odyssey from Miami => NY with key final activity along the fictitious US1 in NJ near where I live. (No matter that the Southern Pacific RR and the scenery gives away the filming location as one of the film studio ranches in SoCal.)
    Rosco Karnes as "One on the Side" Oscar Shapely from West Orange, NJ. Alan Hale Sr as the singing luggage thief and Walter Connolly the gruff, but ultimately loving father(in-law) show that the studio took this film seriously. Lighting is also awesome with many night scenes - romantic breaths, flickering waterways -- motion around the bus stations, and morning activity at the travelers camp.
    Camera placement when Gable negotiates for the tank of gas is inventive. Intercuts when Ellie is deciding whether or not to breach the walls teases us nicely. And, yes the unsuccessful expectoration is a comedy topper, and has been copied many times (e.g. by Jimmie Stewart in Capra's "Wonderful Life"). And after each viewing, I understand why this picture won so many awards.

    frank capra is THE most underrated and underappreciated filmmaker today. and, oddly enough, this used to be my least liked capra film. enjoyable but without the PUNCH of his more politically charged, social commentary films. but, now, i absolurely LOVE this wonderful, quaint and truly dynamic film. its funny and poignant.
    there is no wasted scene or misused shot in "it happened one night." its just a joy to watch from beginning to end like almost all of capra's films. this and "gone with the wind" are the only two gable films i think are any good. ("run silent, run deep," 1958, is pretty good but it kinda drags.)

    The comments about Bette Davis versus Claudette Colbert (presented in Twitterized format) feels almost parallel to what we saw this year with Cate Blanchett and Michelle Yeoh, except Blanchett was actually nominated.
    Keep up the amazing work, BKRW! This one finally put you over the top and I signed up for Nebula.

    That was so engrossing. Well done. I think it's hard to properly grasp how innovative and refreshing It Happened One Night must have been as so many of the tropes and plot devices have become so standard.

    In a perfect world, there would be no awards. Look at 1934, here you have three of the greatest performances, ever committed to film by three of the most talented women to grace the screen. Honestly, how can you choose between the three of them who is the best? All three of those movies are fantastic and I love them all. I watch The Thin every year at Christmas, It Happened One Night once a year too, and although I’ve only seen Of Human Bondage once it left an impression.
    Always enjoy your videos .

    As much as I love Bette, I would’ve voted for Claudette for the Best Actress Oscar because of how much I love It Happened One Night. I think Bette should’ve won for All About Eve to be honest. That was the most egregious robbery of her career.

    • @lemorab1
      @lemorab1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I completely agree with you. I absolutely love "It Happened One Night." It's my favorite Gable performance. Bette Davis over-acted horribly in "Of Human Bondage." Did you know that Colbert was originally cast in "All about Eve," with Anne Baxter also cast as Eve because she resembled Claudette? Then, Colbert had to drop out due to a back injury, and Bette Davis stepped in. Bette Davis was robbed of an Oscar for "All About Eve." Almost no one remembers the winning performance in "Born Yesterday."

      @@lemorab1much as I love Bette, gotta agree with you here. It was ironic how she ended up getting it as a consolation the next year for Dangerous, then lost when she really deserved it in 1950.
      Another great presentation and narration by BKR.

    I’m ashamed to say I haven’t seen this movie yet, but will watch it tonight. Claudette is one of the many actresses who are underrated today. Modern actors have noting on the people who had four weeks or six weeks and couldn’t rely on CGI to do a lot of it for them. It’s starting to see that there are scenes in some Marvel movies that look like the actors, yet are 100% CGI, not even mocap suits. Modern acting is starting to become acting in voice only, which is important, but it’s a lot faster to record a film’s worth of lines in a studio in your pajamas or sweatpants. Back in Claudette’s day, it was blood, sweat, tears, and pure talent all around.
    She reminds me of Audrey Hepburn in this video, only maybe with a happy ending, not the bittersweet ending of Roman Holiday. We’ll see when I watch it.
    If you get around to it, I’d love a video about the friendship between Clark Gable and Myrna Loy because it’s one of the sweetest things ever. You can just tell the adoration they had for each other. Not romantic, but that soul-bond level of just pure friendship and love. And a video about the aviation films at the time (they were in some, yes, but there were more). I fly planes and the history of aviation in that era is fascinating, and a lot of it was on film. Myrna could have died in a plane fire had Clark not run in. Granted, the scene called for a rescue, but the fire actually got out of control and her rescue was literal. She reportedly didn’t know until later that the fire was actually out of control and that he wasn’t exactly acting.

    Love the movies of that era and especially when they got into the face-paced-lightning-delivery of Roz Russell and Cary Grant, etc. Whip smart and fast. I had no idea this film kicked off the genre. Thanks for yet another outstanding documentary. 😎🎥📽🎞

    I remember in 2016 TCM wanted to show 30s movies for a month and I think It Happened One Night was on their list, I saw the movie 2 years ago in HBO Max and I have seen it like 2 or 3 times and I must say that I liked it and I hope they upload it again, I consider it one of those fresh romantic comedies that I can watch due to its plot, directing and the energy of its leading couple, etc... It contains all the elements of a traditional romantic comedy and perhaps for this reason it is still enjoyable today, I also saw the film with a spanish dubbing made in Puerto Rico in the 60s (they had studios dubbing classic movies including Citizen Kane and Casablanca), it was perfect and even funnier I guess, the actor voicing Clark Gable really matched his voice, it seemed like the actors spoke in Spanish.
    I was mostly hoping you'd mention the fact that the hitchhiking scene, when Clark Gable talks while eating a carrot, that is one of the traits that the animator Friz Freleng used for Bugs Bunny since this was one of his favorite movies, and that in the first scene of Gable he talks on the phone and invents a character called "Bugs Dooley".
    Another fun fact: this was one of Hitler and Stalin's favorite movies, Hitler particularly loved Gable especially since he had german blood.
