Fantastic presentation! Only thing is if you see- Genus species var. that is not a cultivar. A variety is just a different form of the plant where mutations have had adaptive benefits, to a specific environments, but not enough to be considered a different species. A good example of this would be- Liatris punctata var. mucronata. This is a variety of L. punctata, that is a little taller and has a smaller range, but is still a naturally occurring straight species and not a cultivar. The easiest way to identify a cultivar is to look for a word in apostrophes after the species/genus name. Something like; Penstemon barbatus ‘Rubycunda’, Echinacea purpurea ‘Double Scoop’, Achillea ‘Moonshine’, or Gaillardia x ‘Arizona Suns’ is the easy way to identify cultivars.

Yeah, I watched a Robin pull a nearly full grown frog out of my waterfall and swallow it whole. I would have never believed it if I hadn’t seen it.

Excellent presentation, thank you! I watched it twice, took notes as I am new in the Midwest and have quite a bit of land I need (read, habitat) to bring back to health. My only suggestions would be to be more insistent about keeping the seed heads. It is a different aesthetic but it is beautiful. Also as per my earlier comment, brush piles.

If people still are not accustomed to the particular beauty of seed heads, how about they cut them but leave them in the garden on the ground? Perhaps in a brush pile. Me, I garden for habitat. I would never remove natural bird seed from the plant knowingly. But brush piles a nice, too.

I sometimes sort of have to cut down tall seed heads. ( neighbors not on board with natives yet ). So I cut them about 3 feet tall, bundle the seed heads on the stalks , I stick them by the bird feeder.

I’ve heard that birds don’t really “taste” things like we do, so what is it that makes some berries more appealing to them?

Great info, but the mouth smacking is a deal breaker for my misophonia.

Tubular flowers are not a "hummingbird's McDonalds." Tubular flowers, if not hybrids with the nectar bred out of them, and if they are not sprayed, are perfectly healthy.

I think she just means " fast food ", as in easily obtainable.

The chitin in insects is not good for humans. No thanks. I’ll let the birds have them.
