  • HOW TO PREP stainless steel tube for TIG welding + a couple of tips that will help you out with the material prep process. We all know that Prepping Stainless steel is either going to make or break you when it comes to the TIG welding process. If you don't follow a few simple steps you're only hurting yourself, Let's make it easy with GTAW SS PREP in under 4 minutes. Whether its automotive fabrication and you're building awesome Stainless steel exhausts, Downpipes or headers..
    The process is the same as a pressure vessel assembly or a welded part for the aerospace industry. Take the time to properly prep your weld area so you can lay down really nice welds without any contamination!
    I will be doing a series on Welding that will include everything from Prep, to fit up, best methods in tacking assemblies for the most aesthetic weld, pie cuts, and so on..Keep welding and practicing and if you need any welding advice, please send me a message on instagram!
    Thank you all for watching! I appreciate it more than you know!

    This is an excellent video. We often get caught up in the welding process and forget about the prep. Burning off lint with torch is a good tip

    Professional welder here, who spent a decade in bio-pharm and semi-conductor ultra high purity piping, specifically a pipe fab shop.
    Rarely did we use a belt sander (contaminants), only for fab'ing special fittings. Didn't use much scoth brite either. NEVER used tools that had previously been used on carbon steel pipe. We always used backing gas (99.9% Argon) for tacking to eliminate internal bluing, and our machines had high frequency starts to prevent tungsten inclusion. But mostly, we used GF and Metabo facing machines to insure square cuts, and pipe reamers and small fine files to remove burrs. We cleaned our joints with isopropyl alcohol before tacking, and sealed the joint with reversed electrical tape.

    Great vid, but i have a few questions if you can help?
    1. I cut alot if mild steel on my bandsaw, is the blade ok to use on stainless steel, or will it contaminate it?
    2. What grit do you use on you're belt sander for grinding the stainless?

    Very nice! Do you always just hand sand it flat without using a table for keeping it square?

    • @hourglassingenuity103
      @hourglassingenuity103  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yep.. I can usually get extremely close. I can check it with a square and a flat surface if I want it to be perfectly square. Usually a super micro angular variation won’t effect fit up too much. I can do a video on how to square off the end of stainless tube also in the future by using a flat surface and a square.

    • @brandyquad
      @brandyquad 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@hourglassingenuity103 Gotcha! As long as the band saw is dialed in, it should be pretty square to start with. I think it's good have the skill to do it by hand. Plus you wont risk adding surface defects sliding it on the table...
      I look forward to your future videos!

    • @hourglassingenuity103
      @hourglassingenuity103  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brandon Parry exactly! The thicker the blade.. less deflection and much easier to keep nice square cuts. Old saws with .750” wide blades work really well in my opinion. Especially on titanium! Thanks for watching and I’ll be posting every Wednesday and Friday!

    • @YszapHun
      @YszapHun 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hourglassingenuity103 another thing is, you don't always cut straight pipes. what if there is a 90° bend that has to be sanded, obviously you cannot push it 'against' something to check the square, bc the whole pipe is a bend. the only thing you can do is to check the flatness of the cut via the shine light through method.. however I am keen to know if there are any really good methods, tools or jigs to make sure your bent pipe cuts are exactly flat.

    Hey Brad, I use a portaband (vertical stand homemade) and bench belt sander but I am struggling with getting clean cuts and then getting a flat surface for a tight fit up. Can you please drop some tips for a nice flat flush ground face?

    Great tips, thank you! Do you back purge your tack welds? I'm just a hobbist and currently building some stainless exhaust where I didn't back purge my first tack welds and the inside of the tubing was pretty terrible so I'm purging them now.

    • @hourglassingenuity103
      @hourglassingenuity103  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Jeremiah Zanin on titanium I will back purge my tacks because it is 1mm or .040” thick usually so it’s easier to accidentally full penetrate on A tack. Now in stainless I don’t purge my tacks on .0625” wall because I use a lot of baby racks at lower amps that do not penetrate through causing carbide precipitation. I’ll be posting a video on back purging stainless tube Friday!
