They were mighty men. I don't know if it is the end of an era ' but they were a huge loss. There are still traditional singers' so with any luck these songs will survive.
The best boy band that ever stood on stage and blasted out some of the best songs ever sung and told stories will thousands of years of history to them, I still miss the Clancy Brothers and their dear cousin Tommy Maken
I had the Distinct pleasure when I was young to see them record an album at the studio on 30th Street between 3rd Avenue and 2nd Avenue in Manhatten NYC. I was playing ball when they arrived and one of the brothers caught the ball and after that we were invited to hear them sing by the Brothers. The greatest pleasure is I received an album of their Great Music and still have it, in fact two albums. There will be nobody that could in my time replace The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem. Their Music will live on and their great songs.
I wore out my dad's vinyl album The Clancy Brothers Live at Carnegie Hall when I was a kid. I had all of their songs on that album memorized. They were/ are an Irish treaaure.

John Sheahan of the Dubliners. The Dubliners were in the audience and John did some lovely whistle work to accompany them. For once, we get to hear the whistle AND Tommy Makem sing - great, isn't it?!!
Just brilliant! Tommy is the ring leader here. His mannerisms bring so much joy to the song. They were one of a kind for sure. Long time fan, and I was happy/sad to see Liam in one of his last concerts in the midlands. A true pro. Nothing like this group around today. At least we’ve still got the videos to cherish.

I kept hearing this song in my head and searched for it for ages, thank goodness I found it. I had no idea what the words were except Toola roola ray and a (container) of (alcohol).
Sure do miss these guys!! I was lucky enough to get their autographs after a concert. While waiting for our ride, we were alone with the Clancy brothers and Tommy Makem as they were waiting for their cab. ( that was many moons ago) Amazing, when you think about it now! I can't recall the exact conversation, but I was sure impressed. God Bless them all!
Interesting that this song was written by JB Buckstone for a London theatre production of his play 'Green Bushes or A Hundred Years Ago' and first performed in 1845. Ironically, although the play was written in a stereotypical 'stage-Irish' style, 'Jug of Punch' became tremendously popular and today is thought by many to be a genuine Irish song.
Elizabeth Morgan this music connects all people. I'm half Puerto Rican, and most identify with that. however, my maternal grandfather played Tommy Makem and the Clancy Bros all the time for me growing up. My eyes are never dry, whilst listening to these songs. I wish I could have seen this live, myself.
thank you mary jane. are you by any chance kin to clarke prouty of Elkins West Virginia. he has built wonderful stringed instruments. I rember one of his open-back banjos. loudest open-back I ever heard!!
It is Paddy is singing, isn't he the singer. And Tommy as always shaping up!! But I love him singing Red Haired Mary. (Hard to believe that they are all dead and in their graves.)

Man...I had no thought what they were saying till I was dink off my arse. Now that I have, I can understand them perfectly. This explains always drunk.
One pleasant evening in the month of June
As I was sitting with my glass and spoon
A small bird sat on an ivy bunch
And the song he sang was the jug of punch
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo, too-ra-loo-ra-lay
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo, too-ra-loo-ra-lay
A small bird sat on an ivy bunch
And the song he sang was the jug of punch
What more diversion can a man desire
Than to sit him down by a ale house fire
Upon his knee a pretty wench
Aye, and on the table a jug of punch
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo, too-ra-loo-ra-lay
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo, too-ra-loo-ra-lay
Upon his knee a pretty wench
Aye, and on the table a jug of punch
Let the doctors come with all their art
They'll make no impression upon my heart
Even the cripple forgets his hunch
When he's snug outside of a jug of punch
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo, too-ra-loo-ra-lay
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo, too-ra-loo-ra-lay
Even the cripple forgets his hunch
When he's snug outside of a jug of punch
And if I get drunk, well the money's me own
And them don't like me they can leave me alone
I'll tune my fiddle and I'll rosin my bow
And I'll be welcome wherever I go
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo, too-ra-loo-ra-lay
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo, too-ra-loo-ra-lay
I'll tune my fiddle and I'll rosin my bow
And I'll be welcome wherever I go
And when I'm dead and in my grave
No costly tombstone will I have
Just lay me down in my native peat
With a jug of punch at my head and feet
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo, too-ra-loo-ra-lay
Too-ra-loo-ra-loo, too-ra-loo-ra-lay
Just lay me down in my native peat
With a jug of punch at my head and feet
