  • 70 minutes of French River canoe camping awesomeness that has taken me over a year to put together. A canoe trip film with additional footage and highlights that span more than 20 yrs of tripping in this ceaselessly amazing park.
Harvesting Light is - at its core - a love letter to my favourite waterway.
    Photography, paddling and solitude.
    Enjoy and thanks for watching.

This has to be one of the best canoeing videos posted on TH-cam. It's exactly what I look for in one; the calm of being out there. This genre of videos has been dominated, for a few years now, by kayak paddles and fishing rods. While I like those to a degree, it's welcoming to see the focus put on the canoe, the scenery, and the atmosphere. Watched it front to back with breakfast. Very relaxing. Top notch!

    Jason: Just bringing the gopros.
    Audience: 😱
    Also Jason: *Drops masterful production*
In your description you use the word love letter. Throughout, the depth of your love for this place was clearly felt and it was very moving.
    Harvesting light, a great title.
Too many questions but must ask what you recorded the audio with on a gopro trip.
PS Embrace the dark side, the double blade awaits you.

Thanks buddy! I did give the double blade a whirl one afternoon... didn't go as smooth as I hoped! I bought a 240...should have gone with much longer I think. I enjoyed the added speed and straight line tracking but could not figure out how to stay dry. Unless I kept the blade really low, I was getting wet! (even with the stoppers) I need to try the longer paddle. All of the audio on the actual trip with Scott was recorded on the Go Pro. I have a little digi recorder that i use sometimes but mostly for BG sound etc. I leave my Go Pro set to "wind" which does a decent job of cutting out the low end wind and knocks etc. I also often treat the audio in the mix as well... it can be a bit hit and miss just using the GP's mics, as you know :-). Xander trip was epic!

@@JasonIrwinTumblehome I hear ya...I got a 250 and wished I had gotten longer for my prospector (36" beam) but now in the Pal (34") it seems to do nicely. Thanks for this answer...I'm shocked to hear it. Your mixing skills are evidently on par with the video editing. Things like water dripping off the paddle were so crisp and you added such a nice little echo (though I know you may augment certain parts with other audio you have on file). In any case, it all sounded terrific. Thanks man, stars really aligned for us.

@@LostLakes I'm not sure what your editing platform you're using but I'm on Premiere Pro for my personal stuff and it has some really nice easy to use tools for audio sweetening... good set of powered speakers helps too :-)

Thanks to both Scott and yourself for another wonderful canoeing short film. Some of the scenes, like your misty morning paddle, were without a doubt the most beautiful canoeing segments I've ever seen. The montages of prior trips over the years, from a young fellow to a family man, were also great to see.
Harvesting light? You Mr. Irwin are a master photo-culturist and filmmaker. Keep up the great work.
    P. S. Next time bring a long lens.

its now 7/25/23 and i am missing your videos, hope all is well.i know there are so many factors involved in planning a camping trip,ie. family,work,money....etc. just dropping a line in hopes of near future trips.your really good at this dude,i,m a landscape photographer and you,ve got this video camera work, sound, editing down.all i,ve got to do is show up with camera gear then edit shots i might like, you on the other hand have personality combined with a modicum of skill at your disposal, making for some beautiful camping trips.of course you have the luxury of living in photographers paradise where as i live in oklahoma,so composing a shot of shit and making it look like the taj mahal with a 24mm lens at a small lake is work, actually its fun.i,m 70yrs old and still love waking up in my tent near a lake.hope your well and really miss your take on this little trip of life.love your astrophotography dude.

Red leather, yellow leather. The best thing that happened from the pandemic for me was finding TH-cam. I started looking for programs for our woodcarving group. One of the guys said that Doug Linkers videos were pretty good and he also had some good outdoor stuff. Growing up in a resort town in Wisconsin I have spent my life in the outdoors. I get you. When you stop to capture an undefinable shot I have been there and you are capturing it on film. HR Such and Such looks like a good ride. I like the way you worked in the historic films and footage from other films. Your star shots are amazing and time lapse sequences well…. Sorry to hear of Scott’s difficulties. Having a paddling buddy for over twenty years as a sounding board has to help navigating this rapid. You are the best cinematographer it is a joy to witness your work. Thanks

Such an apt title: your 'Harvest of Light' was both bountiful and beautifully edited. I first paddled the French mid 70s from Nipissing to the Bay (wind bound for 2 days) and then across and up through L Panache to Killarney. Returned in the mid 90s with 3 young kids in tow and explored various channels from Hartley bay, paddling out to the Bustards, all 5 and the dog in one canoe. Episode 5 rang so true for me. Thanks you.

Fantastic, what an enjoyable watch; the cinematography, the photography, the story and the old footage of trips gone by complemented each other perfectly. Very good quality film, thanks for taking the time to put it together, all the best from the UK.

Your cinematography is amazing and your narration is thought provoking and calming. We would paddle to the Dalles Rapids for day trips and shore lunches (there is an inland route from Bad River that you don't need to go out on the Bay-if you know it ;) )-I think we need to do one next summer. The marker at Dalles Rapids is relatively new- I do not recall hearing of anyone passing in the Dalles Rapids. The Jamieson and Crooked have taken a few lives in the past 50 years.
I think that the draw to the area is the energy of the rocks. They hold a millennium of energy and when you lay on the warm rocks you can feel it. The rocks take away your negative energy, the stress of everyday life seems to drain away and your mind quiets to hear just the wind through the trees and the water lapping at the shore. I cannot wait for May!

Great to see you making videos again Jason! Totally agree about the eagles...never used to see them as a kid...now I see them all the time and my wife and kids have no idea why I'm always so excited to see them.
