My Grandson is helping me build it. We will pick up the 5 different laps tomorrow from the post office, already got the cabinet started. I'm using a 5 gallon bucket for the lap bowl and water spin off vessel.
I have used mine with and without. Depends on the thickness of them and how precise you want your flat edges to be. Precision costs a whole lot more money and time to get it right.
Kia Ora bro, what thickness do these blanks start at roughly? And how thick is a finished piece roughly? Also do they taper from top to bottom from the side on view? Or the same thickness through the whole length…Ngaa mihi nui🙏🏾

You could probably cut out a few, I am currently using 120g diamond wheel, 400g wheel, 240g paper then 400g paper maybe higher but not often before polishing, bit of a matte finish but fine polishing is not my goal.

People use both laps and or wheels for this personal preference. I have just got a expanding drum with a 400g belt on it. So I go from 120g flat lap to the 400g drum then sand with 280 and 400 on my foot powered Potters wheel, then done. There are videos of it all on my channel if you search for them.
Not sure where to buy. It's a point carver if your looking, I made this myself, I think I have a video in my collection about making it. Let me know if you can find it.

Pounamu is the maori name, common name is greenstone and scientific name is nephrite.

About 1 cm is a good thickness for this style i think can go more or less. A side view taper is an option, i like it personally, not necessary though
What about on a smaller Toki, say 2 inches. Do you still use the same blade? Reason I ask is it seems like it would be hard to hold a smaller piece.
Your right it is harder, and I do still use the same technique.

Yes these were made from many stones when they were used as tools, and the form is used in different stones now too.

I've only bought cheap ones from richon tools. Quality is variable, get what you pay for. Not much help sorry.
