    I recently started coming across your videos because they were suggested to me. I am an artist and love to draw (and most recently ) watercolor people and especially cats. I saw the way you painted cats in this video and it really inspired me to use this technique and then build off of it to create my own kind of kitties... I love listening to your calm voice and how relaxing your videos are to watch. I also love how you made a comment either in this video or another - of how there is already so much "real" stuff that we see in real life - so it is good to have fun and create things that aren't real.... And we need that escapism in our real lives...Because real life can be tough and stressful at times -For many of us - art is our escape (myself included)... So thank you for saying that...and thank you for your whimsical work - it is such an inspiration to me and I just love your style... I have added your style along with Jane Davenport and Tara Laporte along into my art inspirations - Keep on doing what you are doing. You are a joy to watch.

    I feel like A junk journal is like a memory book to me. I love nature and I am always picking up some bit of something along my path and it’s a lovely place to put these things in. Perhaps feathers from your chickens and pressed flowers from your garden and a postcard with a lovely painting on it. You should give it a go and try putting it on your channel once a week. I think that would be great! Have fun

      What a fabulous idea Debra! I too am always picking up feathers and odds and ends. I must get round to pressing some flowers. Pansies come to mind! And I am going to think about the idea of doing the junk journal as part of the channel offerings. It fits in perfectly with everything that interests me. Thanks very much for the support, I really appreciate it xxx

    I thank you for sharing your way of drawing a cat. I think it is wonderful. I paint along everyday - and get such great inspiration from you. When you asked about the junk journalling and where to get books - I had the same question - I asked a junk journalling artist & he said he gets his books from Thrift shops - then he doesn't feel bad about tearing them up. He also does painting on sheet music - and he said he gets that from thrift stores as well when he can.

    Love these cats, and I’m learning so much from your videos.
    I do make junk journals… I write in them, add in little bits of ephemera, such as my theatre tickets, receipts from museum entry, bus tickets, etc. I always put in drawing paper, sometimes a gusseted pocket to hold a couple pencils. Watercolor paper would be lovely. As far as tearing apart a book… I use a lot of aged textbooks, many outdated. Magazine pages, sometimes gessoed over, and lined paper, graph paper, tabulation paper… they all lend themselves to different ways to express myself, either in words or in drawings, or in images I have found interesting. I put in photos I have taken, as well as cut out images from magazines that may inspire future art.
    I can imagine your junk journal containing lots of whimsical sketches, along with things that inspire you. You don’t have to include book pages, as there are no rules what HAS to go in a junk journal.

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi Elisabeth and thanks so much for your interesting message. I'm beginning to get the feel for what a junk journal is now. It seems to me to be a combination of lots of ideas - a mixture of bookbinding a scrapbook/photo album/sketchbook incorporating decoupage, collage and needlework and filled with 2D memorabilia - in other words all the crafts I have enjoyed over the years combined into one project! What fun. I shall have to start making one immediately!! Thanks so much again for your input, much appreciated!

    Hi Diane, loved this and I'll give it a go. Back o a few of your questions. I'm an English tutor to primary school kids and they do love to colour in. At times there is a drawing exercise to complement thier learning such as draw a snowman under a rainbow wearing a bowtie. They always love to do these and are very happy when I bring the pencils for them to colour in! I love it too...and draw on the board too!!!
    As for the junk journaling (or journaling) I had the same question ( what do you do with all the journals you make? I was watching a TH-cam on that yesterday (The Unexpected Gypsy) She said one thing she does or we can do is write, draw, paste our dreams...visualise it...and they will happen. Kind of like a prayer I guess. Anyhow that part of it seemed to make sense to me. Perhaps it's also as a keepsake for family to rummage through when were gone? Anyhow I'm not sure I could put hours of effort into it.....I do have a writing journal that I write in from time to time...not often...just more things I think are significant to me. Dreams I have, poems, happenings etc.
    Thanks again for all your lovely ideas! xx

    What gorgeous whimsical catsicles, absolutely bursting with pride! Thank you Diane for inspiring me to get out my paints - took up watercolours when I broke an arm at the beginning of lockdown as it's one of the few things one can do single handedly, clay requiring at least three hands. I love these two kitties and i will definitely try my hand and see how they come out. I'm new to watercolor but am just having a blast, and often a big laugh at my efforts. You mentioned junk journaling and that was new to me until my daughter in law mentioned it one day and we started talking. Apparently, it's a type of self made "scrapbook" but one with various pockets made of, for instance, the return envelopes you typically toss, and other similar ways of holding things, It's like a three dimensional scrapbook, to hold various small things you treasure - ticket stubs to a fabulous concert, or invitations to weddings etc...no one way to make them - that's where your personal creativity comes in. Sounds fun but I'll probably not make one, too many other things going on right now.

    I’ve just come across this video and love the cat demo. You asked about junk journaling and as someone who enjoys making them I must first say that it’s not about ripping up your favorite books, its more about making art papers and binding them together into a journal form. True junk journals are made from recycled or “ throw away” type papers that are embellished with ephemera and any art you wish to make. They can be personal journals of art and can of course include writings as well. It’s a platform for creativity. You have probably already looked into this as its 6 months down the road but this is my experience.

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Donna, thanks so much for your interesting comments about junk journals. Since I made that video I have created a journal myself, using the instructions from the paper outpost channel. Pam is very good at showing and telling how to do these things. I wish I had more time to spend on it as it is a very gratifying occupation. I finished my first one, and now I am writing in it occasionally. I recently heard of a new take on this idea. People are starting to call them smash books. I think it’s basically the same thing but based on using a discarded book as the basis. I found it quite exciting to actually create the cover and the spine and to stitch together the pages. that seems to be more interesting to me. Anyway, I’m glad you’re enjoying the videos, hope you watch many more of my painting demos!

    Thanks for the Kitties! I will work on them this afternoon after I do a bit of Junk Journalling. What do I do with junk journals? Make sure you include a lot of pockets and envelopes in the journal. Now go through the bottom of you handbags, and the junk drawer in the kitchen, the glove box in the car - you get the idea - and pull out any receipts,, candy wrappers, lists and notes. Either glue stick them on blank pages or just tuck them into a pocket in the journal. Also, I like printing out song lyrics on patterned paper and including the lyrics that are "calling to me" that day. You can fold them however you like and tuck them in. Actually, after you haven't looked at the journal for quite some time, you can slowly go through out and bring up a lot of memories. It's making art out of the mundane parts of your life. Enjoy!

    • @DianeAntoneStudio
      @DianeAntoneStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much Zhi for your tips. I shall print them out for my journal. No, seriously, I am going to do that, because your ideas are great. Here's one of mine - I used to keep folders with recipes I gathered from magazines, or typed out (on a typewriter) or was given by friends etc. I'm going to make a junk journal specially for those bits of paper, plus more. I think it'll be great. Meanwhile, I'm diving through photos, music, lyrics, poems - all sorts! Plus a big pile of paintings to cut up! Great hobby. Thanks so much!

    ❤ Awesome beautiful cats! I SO enjoyed watching you create these… and Diane, I totally agree with being upset with tearing apart books for craft purposes! Many of those books are really old and should be preserved, not torn apart! Using old hymn books and vintage books should never be used as a craft!

    Junk journal is to take paper and reuse it by making a book. I've made them with pockets to hold letters I receive; I've used old paper from books I'd throw out to make a calender journal each year; I make spiritual journals or prayer journals, I truly enjoy making one with Journaling cards to write sayings my grand daughter said or did that amuses me.....the uses and embellishing are endless.

      @tonimastro636 - my grandmother took up painting around 70, after she had been widowed for many years, and had also become a Senior Companion for mentally and physically challenged people. She continued to expand her talents until after 94 yr old, when her eyesight began to falter. She quilted (by hand!) until very close to her departure, just 2 wks short of her 97th BD. I wish she had held on longer, to have been able to get into digital photography, as well as having her world expanded by the many artisans on TH-cam. You’re never too old to learn something new😁❣️

    I had to answer your question about junk journaling. It’s actually quiet fun coming up with all the ideas of pockets, tucks and beautiful designs. Yes you do make sure there’s always paper in there to write on, just little reminders or thoughts (like a normal journal minus the decorations. However, I’ve never used book pages….I do it with stencils, stamping and doodling. There are some beautiful papers to choose from so why use a book. Junk journals are probably not for everyone. I started junk journaling before I started to give watercolor painting a go 😊 I enjoy doing both. Let me know please if you do try it 😉

    As far as junk journaling and books, I’ve been perplexed about that as well. But, I could buy books, from the dollar store, with no intention or reading it, and use it for making crafts. I’ve made book page roses for 3 family members weddings so far. I’d like to know more about junk journaling as well.

    I love all that you do and share. Thank you so much. I make junk journals. You can use any paper for the pages. Some of mine are made of bags and junk mail. You can use them to journal in. Put pictures and drawings in. They are whatever you want them to be. I draw and paint birds, fish and even the cats just now, on watercolor paper and cut them out to add to a journal I am making now. I find these TH-camrs very helpful now and when I first started. They all have great videos that will answer your questions.

    i've made at least 50 of them. some are for writing in and others just to look at. i like to use lots of mixed media in mine and anything vintage from paper, to books, to lace or material. Ticket stubs, time cards, receipts, ledgers, prescriptions, postcards, postage stamps. Arrange them all in beautiful ways that draw a person in for a look. It's a place for memories, pictures, recipes, random thoughts, or ideas. I either sell them or i gift them.

      @DianeAntoneStudio  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      WOW!!!!! Fifty???? What do you use for the covers Jacqueline? I am very new to this and so far I’ve only seen people using scrap cardboard from cereal boxes and so on. I have quite a few pieces of cardboard lying around from the backs of pads of water colour which I thought might work. And to you do sewn signatures for your groups of paper? Or is there another way?

    • @jacquelineremus8674
      @jacquelineremus8674 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DianeAntoneStudio Cereal boxes, cardboard, and a lot of books that I have gutted for covers. Tearing apart books does seem difficult but I buy books that I will never read from thrift stores and take the discarded ones from the library. I usually cover them in fabric or paint them.
      The best way to bind them is to use a 3 hole stitch on the signatures. Awkward at first but eventually becomes second nature. You can also use staples, ribbon, or tape.
      They are so much fun. You would be great at it with all your artistic skills.

     @Diane Antone Studio A junk journal can be anything you want! The name, Junk Journal, confuses most people! It turns out that I love making them, but it is not my first love. Watercolors is. I have the same struggle with the idea of tearing up books. I bought quite a few, hoping I would get sent something that was falling apart. Nope! They were wonderful! I have also read quite a few! :D If you can find a place where they are disposing of books because they are falling apart, tell them you will take discards! You only need so many, too, unless you are going to be selling them! I had to stop watching junk journaling TH-camrs because I was accumulating but not using it. My table has my old watercolor palette and paper on it now! :D Make a book or a few. It is really a fun thing to do - but do it the way YOU want to do it!!! I think Gayle Agostinelli is great for junk journaling and Nik the Booksmith for making books - or just entertainment - is fabulous! Enjoy! Oh, and I love your cats!!!

    Junk journals are quite interesting..the best imo are created w/ lots of space for journaling. Many add tons of ephemera that (to me) clutter it up. I want to make one too : ) + I discovered stenciling w/watercolor( leaves especially) add interest that you can write over.
    I LOVE your cats faces!!! TY for explaining how to draw them...I read that cats have fewer facial muscles so they aren't as expressive. HOWEVER- one of my cat clan opens her eyes wide & blinks as though S.O.S ing to me when she is trying to tell me something important 😂--& yours smile😃☺️. I hope your husband is home today/tomorrow (?) and on the mend. And TY for the info about using the primary colors + which you use, as I find it a little confusing. Hoping YOU are well too ❤️‍🩹

      Hi Firechick! Thanks for your tips and comments about junk journals. I agree, I think it was the ephemera surfeit that was confusing me! Now I realise that is only one way of doing it I'm okay with it! Started to make one today - Sunday afternoon relaxation! Interesting what you say about cats. We were told by a vet that they slow blink to express friendliness, and that they are disappointed if we don't blink back! So every time we look at our cats we feel obliged to look silly and close our eyes! Seems to work!

    When junk journals were a new idea they were made from gathering together junk mail, waste paper and things you would normally throw out. They were gathered together and made. Into a book. Made for saving little items you want to keep. Photos, letters, the key you found in your first apartment that didn’t fit anything, a kiss mark of your favorite lipstick, rice from your wedding, a beautiful rose bud, the tag from your old dogs collar…they were a memory book, a diary, grocery lists, a book for doodles, testing paint swatches, etc. made from junk.

Its best to start with old books tat are falling apart that way you don't feel too guilty. I've used old french books, old exercise books, vintage papers such as diaries and old school diaries i have picked up from bootfairs and markets etc. I make them to do themes works such as summer, autumn, travelling and note things that have happened. or I follow prompts such as #junkjournaljuly (you'll find the latest videos on there!). You can repurpose books but I have never seen a junk journal that used the kind of books you are speaking of. If you want to see beautiful junk journals, a collection of artful works, look up Gayle Agostinelli. She is a master in my opinion. It's an art form. Some people use things like junk mail we all get and repurpose envelopes and flyers recreating miniture works of art. I bet your journal would be exquisite. Junk journals are to be what you want them to be: a place you can doodle, paint, collage, glue in pieces of poetry or inspirational quotes, photos, or mementos. They can look rough or refined, they can be made out of any kind of paper that you like ( or don’t like, just cover it with paint). They can be pocket or purse sized, or larger. They can be given as gifts of a little art sample book to a friend to just look at because it’s beautiful and it comes from your heart. Can you tell I’ve made some and I enjoyed it very much? Junk journaling is basically collage. You can use painting techniques, fabric, etc. paper with patterns or color with writing or you have written on. I am an avid book reader and I strongly hope people use books that are damaged ie cover missing, where pages have been scribbled in, pages missing, or books that have been widely and the book can easily be replaced. Pieces of letters from family members can become a memory in your junk journal. The journal itself can have a theme or a page can or it can just be spontaneous.

I call mine an Altered book.. perhaps that is something different .. i don't know.. But i take a book that was destined for the dump/trash.. thats the only way i can do it as i love books too.. I do collage and i leave space for journaling too.. I find it a nice space to be creative... You can add little tags... glue pages together to make them more sturdy.. What ever you can think of and if your stuck there are lots of youtube channels out there to help you out.. You can even make your own book by binding loose pages together of paper you like.. some people tear apart junk mail and evelopes and bind that into a book... the sky is the limit.. I hope you'll have fun... Hugs! deb

    I make junk journals and it encompasses all the crafts I love ie art, collage writing sewing, gluing, stencilling etc creating a beautiful book I can journal in. You have many options. You can make book from scratch sewing in the signatures using a book cover or making your own to house it. You can repurpose a book which otherwise may go to the dump. This is an altered book and some pages are torn out and pages covered in decorated paper of gessoed to be used for painting. The pages that are torn out can be used to make tags and pockets. Really in junk journalling nothing is wasted. It can be hard to use a book sometimes. I have books I bought for the illustrations to use in journals which I can't bring myself to use. Though if something is added to my journal it gets looked at many times as I love my journals so much I flip through them from front to back many times over the months I am using it. Magazines are a good resource and I find I can use them more easily than a beautiful book. Do make a journal. It is a wonderful creative thing to do. It has brought me a lot of joy. And you can incorporate watercolour paper for art in it. You can also dye pages with coffee or other dyes from veg or food colouring to create your own beautiful pages.

You'll be pleased to know that shortly after I made that video I decided to give it a go and I made a journal from scratch, using the instructions from Pam at Paper Outpost, who I find very clear. I have been filling this first one with lots of mementos I had accumulated over the years, as well as my own art, some decoupaged napkins, postcards, letters, envelopes, photos, pressed flowers, lace, braid, fabric, and some lovely handmade inserts which a subscriber sent to me... it's coming along very well! Thanks for the encouragement, I have found this a wonderful antidote to stress, and often at the end of the day I flip through it and stick another thing in! Glad you are a subscriber and hope you enjoy the videos!! Best wishes, Diane xxx

    I enjoy you work and tutorials. Junk journaling can be done in a book bought for tha purpose at a thrift shop. You can do work on different mediums in there or write or do a combination of techniques. Try it and let loose. Much love!
