This notes should be difficult in a full show, for many days and at the real tempo of the song. He's an amazing singer and now he's singing very well at tones according to his age (like Invisible Monster)
Fucking how dude. That's the original key, basically 30 years later. Like I don't expect Dream Theater to ever perform their catalog from the 90s or even early 2000s ever again, but this is just impressive.
People who don't know how hard this is are the people talking rubbish on his stuff. He's sixty and still has the ability. His tone I've never * loved * BUT it's grown on me and I can appreciate he is a masterful vocalist. And he really is.
I know and I am a singer. His technique is plain horrible. And age shouldn't be the card to pull here, because a real masterful vocalist, Luciano Pavarotti, sang opera even just before he passed. He was in bad condition in health and still carried on. That is the power of good vocal technique, even in declining health, you can still perform your well-known pieces. In Labrie's case, he absolutely could sing these songs much better, but his very bad technique limits and damages his voice constantly.
@@Anonyomus lol I'll listen to the countless vocal experts who have covered his range and ability with very positive findings. I don't think he's very consistent live but he has technique. And whilst you name exceptions to the rule, it's a very well documented thing that age decreases vocal abilities. Which leads me to think you are probably just a normal singer who doesn't like his vocals. Correct?
@@carldavies2005 Those experts like to pander to fans. Ask any Bel Canto singer instructioner or someone who doesn't profit from pandering to fandom echo chambers, they will tell you his technique is visibly and audibly very sub-par. These multi-channel networks are all connected to labels and media platforms, which basically means that if you criticize someone that is big, you get threatened from all directions. All those reaction-videos are all just money grab to feed off from cognitive biases. I am a baritone and I can sing Pull Me Under chorus with relative ease and in clean english, even though English isn't my native language. I can sing Queen, Simon & Garfunkel and King Diamond. No problem. Even though my voice type is probably many steps lower than James', I can sing even some parts of Dream Theater's songs. Even me, clearly not being a suitable vocalist for DT, could sing James' vocal lines in original key. They are not easy, but all thanks to technique, maintenance and discipline to practice, I can do it. So in James' case, he should be able to do it much easier, because his timbre is almost next to Art Garfunkel's or Bruce Dickinson's: a high and dramatic tenor. But my point is, which you probably missed, is that James could totally shut me and many of his critics up, if he would just learn to sing again from square one. New technique, new basics and avoid these horrible bad habits he has by all costs. His whole face is strained from neck to the forehead, he clearly doesn't have diaphragmic support, his face is twisting and he sounds like he's being suffocated. I can't imagine the headache he has after the every show, because I did those same mistakes, too. Let me tell you, that straining sucks the life out of singing, because you feel like passing out constantly with delayed headache. And I am not only blaming James on his vocal decline, mostly I blame DT as a band and their management/label. They many times forced James to do tours, when he wasn't in condition to sing at all. He had to endure such unfairness in this. Their work routine of constant touring, long and demanding sets, was the final nail in the coffin, which basically rendered James unemployable singer, if he was kicked out of DT. He won't be employed as a singer anywhere, because DT destroyed his vocal career outside DT. It is a tragedy really. Due to his sacrifice, I'm quite sure that DT cannot fire him out of obligation to not set James into financial ruin. If James would've quit Dream Theater during the years he needed rest and educated himself further on the voice, he could be really something else. But I blame DT and their management for failing James.
I'm really impressed. I always loved James as a singer but to be honest I thought he had retired this song. It's too fucking high. The guy is 60. Congrats!!!
my most favorite..i hear that he is using his voice techniques.cause when on the album from that he uses his full power voice hes like FLYING!!!wow wow!
He sounds great, however, the tempo in those examples is slower than on the recording. Isn't it naturally easier, when he can take the time (duh) to breathe in between the words?
it's also harder to sustain a note longer, and since these are acapella you can hear everything that's going on, so please stop shitting on him for slowing stuff down
No no no no , don't do that anymore, those days are gone James, don't do that to yourself anymore , i love your voice in the lower regions, but this is over, fans did actually went away during the last concert in Amsterdam . My wife went for the first time with me and my son to a DT concert and she said , instrumental it was incredible but the singing was way of sometimes , it was not nice to hear, singing was over the top sometimes. You have nothing left to prove anymore, just go down a noch, the great Freddie Mercury knew his limits and did the same thing, and he was in his prime with his voice and had no technical gadgets in those days , and his voice still is recognized as one the greatest voices in Rock history.
I think he's doing amazing, especially for his age. I don't think it's good for any vocalist's 'health' to sing stuff like this night after night. Especially with such long shows. I hope he never stops practising, older singers need to adapt their technique. And draw a line on which is comfortable to pull out live and which is not.
this is why i don’t sing higher than i know i can sing to, i sing to my abilities, i don’t push it like nasa rocket going into a toilet bowl, i don’t know how that makes sense but it does
Will you people stop paying money to this maniac to sing a cappella for your birthday? There’s seriously nothing else you would want for your birthday?
I agree, he sounds better. But it's ridiculous to sing it in that key. The rest of the guys in the band are just assholes. It should've been pitched down long time ago. All the songs that are so high. The man was never consistent with it.
When I first listened to Take the Time, this part kind of ruined the song for me. I was listening to the intro and the next parts and was like “Wow, this sounds soo amazing!” and then this part came and ruined it
I understand. For example, I noticed I’m not a huge fan of “bass voices” in Metal (like in the cover version of Carry on My Wayward son from the band The Showdown), but I like those high notes in Take The Time. So thanks God we have all kinds of music so no one is left behind ♥️

A very, very difficult verse. I'm so glad to hear James practising that wonderful song.
The best performance so far, such a difficult part to sing.
