CID Development Perspectives: Place-Based and Industrial Policies

Rodrik highlights the possibilities for applications of industrial policies beyond manufacturing/high-tech and with the diverse range of policy instruments. He presents a conceptual framework for a government's industrial policy optimization problem and explored what systemic evidence can teach us and is limitations. Hanson presents his ongoing project, "How Does Place-Based Policy Work?" He highlights hat PBP has made an (un)expected return to prominence and explored policy options for helping distressed places. Their work involves constructing the policy production chain, mapping policy resource flows, and measuring local state capacity This talk occurred at the 2023 North East Universities Development Consortium (NEUDC) Conference at the Harvard Kennedy School on November 4, 2023.
