Masks always, and I mean always, were functional necessities for the Sith that the guy complained about. It wasn’t until Disney came along that it served the purpose that the narrator describes it as being there for, to make the character more menacing because Disney characters are not. Even as the bad guys. The masks in lore always were worn as the result of injuries or the decay of the dark side.

Here's a small tidbit on Grievous and the Kaleesh, the Kaleesh were being murdered and enslaved by a insectoid species called the Hukh, and Grievous killed so many Hukh he became seen as a demigod by his people

The story of the kaleesh is one of my favourite in all of the Star Wars… and the story of grievous is madness as well. To rise up to the status of Demi god and then completely destroyed and rebuilt just to be ultimately a slave

Back in the 90’s I read a lot of Star Wars graphic novels and was a bit disappointed with the direction Disney went. Luke skywalker joins the dark side then comes back, the solos have twins oh and the Big Sith E isn’t dead he had clone vats and could essence transfer which is what he did whilst base jumping in the Death Star. Made really interesting set of stories

I don't think it was a dig at Disney, so much, as it was a dig at Palpatine. When this book was written, it was likely done so with the knowledge of the Dark Empire series of comics. In that series it was revealed that Palpatine kept a host of clone bodies on standby for when he needed to swap out bodies. Also, Darksaber touched on that, as well.
I think Luceno was brilliantly tapping into the great psyche of Plagueis. We can see he was a bit of a perfectionist, proud. Clones weren't good enough for his immortality. Palpatine, on the other hand, seemingly didn't share that philosophy. Like many apprentices (and Dark Side users) the quick and easy path is the more seductive one. If Palpatine could achieve his objectives by skipping a step or two, so be it.
I think it's possible that Plagueis was more disciplined in achieving his mortality in the "right way," as he saw it.
That's my mere speculation on it. I just tuned into this series. Great job. I'm enjoying the read through and corresponding graphics you've put in these videos. Again, excellent work.
    Be well.

I’ve loved listening to Star Wars audiobooks, both at home and at work, for the past six years, but your comments and discussions after each chapter added a new fresh perspective that made even books I had read or listened to before like Death Troopers and Red Harvest even more interesting to revisit.

The ancient Sith Lords used to never show their face to better hide their emotions from other sith who might take advantage. So a lot of sith wear a mask for that very reason or as an homage to the ancients.

I've been think a lot about what RipOffProductionsLLC was talking about in part 1. Perhaps the soul/spirit transfer is not an all or nothing, immediate thing. Perhaps it is a slow, creeping takeover so that it will be easier to take over all of these strong-willed Sith. Perhaps, the Sith start out as Darth (insert name here) and, after the death of their master, slowly become more and more Darth Bane. That could be why we heard whispers from Plagueis's old master in his head? Food for though.
Keep up the wonderful work Harry! Love what you do!

You mentioned the similarity between Disney's plot with Palpatine's clones in episode 9 and said that the mouvie had not come out when this book was released, but this idea of transferring someone's essence into a clone was, if I'm correct, first mentioned in Dark Empire which came out in the 90s and which has a similar plot to the Rise of Skywalker

Also self modification is a thing like we see in book of Boba fett and others like cad bane to assist in there jobs.

Touch on the comment about sith and masks.. Good name drops on some of the known sith to have a mask. But it's deeper than you think. In the days of the jedi Civil War sith would wear masks to block out outside influences to their mind such as "Jedi mind trick" and other telepathic force based skills. Allows them to stay focused and somewhat have a clear mind on tasks they're carrying out. Good example is Emperor Palpatine. Only his mask wasn't a traditional mask was just a force trick hiding his true form and self from the world. Another is Darth Nihilus! Who used dark side magic and sorcery on his mask. Evoking the mask or other objects with darkside magic was popular known and practiced skill of the old sith. But Like it's been mentioned in these chapters, Skills and techniques lost to time or forgotten. Thanks for reading who ever did. May the force be with you all

1:05:36 I think this book goes to show the lack of understanding of the books the current writers of the Disney franchise have. It looks like they watched Attack of the Clones, decided it was the Republic that was the patriarchy and decided to take it down. Their work on Rise of Skywalker seems to be reinforced with Bad Batch and Mandalorian that cloning is the key to immortality. As their surrogate father Palpatine is unable to do anything more then to inhabit a cloned body.

Regarding breathing masks for Sith Lords at 29:30. The Dark Side affinity has a dark cost to the Dark Side Servant ot Weilder. While Dark Side gives power it damages individual's regenerative abilities. Wounds don't heal properly. Organs are degraded. Use of heat and fire damages lungs and respiratory system. Tissues are inflamed, producing fluids that block breathing. So breathing aparatuses are needed to compensate for lost biological activity.

I don't have a problem with the brief glimpse we get of Plagueis really, but the overall story of the show was so weak and the plot so convoluted that it felt annoying to throw in this extra bit that ends up just being another loose end that doesn't come to anything. I think the show was overall dull, did nothing with ideas that could have been compelling if done better and the best part was the fight scenes.

i think essence transfer is a flawed skill. to use it on someone who has the power in the forse to defeat you is not going to be captured especially when your energy and force is depleted in the end of a battle. i would like to think it worked on someone but not often as the reason to use it is to body hop after youve been defeated. also can this attack just be avoided if one knows about essence transfer youd think expecting it the could move an the person usings soul would just be gone. it doesnt really make sense that its all been one sith the whole time especially with the different directions we know different sith have taken since bane.
