I had a similar issue where my rx8 wouldnt make any more power if i pushed the pedal further than halfway. Ran and drove normally as long as i didnt go full throttle though. I tried a ton of things and then eventually came to this and it was very helpful. Ended up getting a map sensor off a mazda 6 or millenia or something for free from pick n pull and my rx8 is back in action
@@riozz5201 it could also be that the connectors are dirty, try a cleaner before buying a new one. Checking the spark plugsand wires if they haven't been changed yet
My Rx8 did the EXACT thing you are talking about in this video. I think mine might be intermittent tho, i went thru the same steps you did, cleaned out the filter, MAF, checked my intake lines etc. Still kicked a little bit, same issues after all that. Then one day, i go to take it to work....i start it up, let it warm up, engine chokes once a little bit but doesnt die, runs perfect after that. ????? then i stumble on this video, im excited to go check this out and see if it works! I'll keep everyone posted!

Take the spark plugs out and crank it with the gas to the floor. Do that for 10 sec with a minute pause about five times then put the plugs back in and fire it up. It should start. If you find oil or gas on the plugs your probably fine. If you find coolant on the plugs or get sweet smelling white smoke after it starts then you have a blown coolant seal.

I got a question. I just got a mazda rx8. It has 62000 miles. I just started to experience power loss when I drive it. When I put the paddle to the metal it does not accelerate as it did when I got it. My dad thinks it is the fuel pump. Should I just take it to a dealership? I do not want to destroy the car thinking I know what to do.

Holy shit I hope this is all my problems are with the RX8 I just picked up haha!!! We went through the SAME tests. It did need 2 new coils, and all spark plugs. That was not a problem at all to get done. new air filter as well. Last owner beat the car up on gravel roads. When I came across this video.... I got really excited... So when I get a boost later today (battery is dead LOL) I'm going to see if unplugging it makes a difference. My RX8 backfires big time at lower rpm (4k and below). and doesn't like to stay running, and the rpms also jump like a spazzy bunny when I try to keep the idle around 3k.... I really hope this is it for now. I do think a rebuild may need to be considered.
Ive been having the exact same problems i am going to try this my 8 is at the mazda dealership right now and they still haven't figured out the problem. Ive replaced spark plugs wires and coils the thermostat catalytic converter both upstream and downstream o2 sensors on my own it will run good driving about an hour or 2 but after that it will lose power and whenever i come to a stop it will stall and i have to wait like 10 minutes to crank it over and start again
Hey mate, my rx8 drives fine cold, but as soon as it heats up and I try push the rpm above 5000 it makes a strange noise and has reduced power, I unplugged the barometric sensor and ill be driving it tomorrow. ill let you know how it goes. I've been chasing this problem for a while now, and it keeps on getting worse and worse. I've changed spark plugs, fuel pump and had my fuel injectors tested and checked spark from coils and they are all fine. I'm hoping its not a compression problem.
Blind Dreamer when i unplug the sensor it has more power and runs a lot richer. My engine still has a loose bolt sound to it sometimes but still has reasonable power. I got my compression checked, it was above about 88/95 psi, above the 75 minimum but not in the 110 - 130 recommended range. Rebuild time is coming :(

Oil metering pump plug can get corrosion and cause a low power limp mode situation mine had that issue I cleaned the plug for the omp and it runs like a champ now.
do have any video about change spark plugs? I have a similar problem, except it idle at 500rpm inside of 1000rpm. I have to press the pedal twice as hard then normal.

Dude you need to realign your fuel pump, pictures at 7:08 the small arrow on the top of the pump assembly should be pointing toward the front of the car.
+kris baer could be. The engine will probably die if you unplug the sensor while it is running, but if it starts and runs great after that, you have found the problem.
Voiding Warranties some of the eBay mass air flow sensor will still cause a lean code you need a catch can or use the tsb from Mazda to move some lines towards the back of the intake
Problem sounds like a bad Mass Flow Sensor. Bad sensor signal would cause exactly the problems described. Holy crap that air filter, wtf. How long has that been in there? Should probably replace that nasty thing. Good find, though. RX8club is great.
+Yu Wish Air filter has been in there since 2010 ish. So too long lol. I went down the MAF sensor route first, but having a spare car to swap parts makes troubleshooting easy.
@@GamerDock Yes, pull the plug on the sensor first and see if the major issues go away (it will cause a CEL with the plug pulled) and if that solves the major symptoms replace the sensor.
That's a closed loop problem, could be o2 sensor related. The car starts in open loop with some sensors not used then it slams it into closed loop after a time delay and the 02 sensor warmed up. Normally this is bumpless and not noticeable. If it won't restart for a while after I would start by unplugging both o2 sensors and see if it runs.
Good guess, actually the current engine has around 80K. The first engine was overheated by the previous owner and then let to rust in it's own coolant for months. The current engine was bought used and has had 2 stroke premixed with gas for the 40k miles it's been with me, and is still strong.
you are a better tech than this. you of all people should know not to ignore a dtc. a lean code is often a bad MAF. k&n filters are known for taking out maf sensors. simply unplugging does not always work, you have a good test unit. don't be a parts replacer. use your obd. I would expect you to find a bad maf sensor, the load value is off or the altitude compensation is off, often a baro sensor. both are often in the maf. put a maf in the car, or baro. I have seen this problem several times

Fuel pump? Mine slowly stopped running. Eventually stopped trying to get going. Put a fuel pump in and it was all fine

Could be an ignition coil issue or a spark plug issue. I would check coils plugs and wires first.

+beriana barometric sensor. I think some literature mistakenly calls it a manifold air sensor.
I unplug the sensor but still loss the power and stalling , I changed my spark plugs too and still the same .

Also check water temperature reading. I remember something like that with a failed coolant temperature, but it's been quite a while.
