Oddisee - CounterClockwise

  • Oddisee’s production simmers in its own orchestral gumbo. You sense he’s really a jazzman in different form, inhabiting the spirit of Roy Ayers and other past greats. The Fader’s compared him to a musical MC Escher, calling hailing his “grandiose and symphonic sound” and “relevant relatable messages.” Pitchfork praised his “eclectic soulful boom-bap.”
    From the upcoming Oddisee solo album "The Good Fight"
    “CounterClockwise is about being there for people & them working against you as a result. Becoming the bearer of their problems because they know you can handle it," Says Oddisee.
    This is the second song from the Brooklyn by-way-of Prince George's County musicians upcoming solo album "The Good Fight." The song explores the counterproductive nature of some relationships that end up draining those involved. Disorienting and complex layers of backsliding record slips, driving drums, and haunting vocalizations push the song forward while Oddisee's crisp and calm vocals tell the story of people moving in different directions. And while anger may be somes primary drive, and fire may be their weapon, Oddisee reminds us that water is their easy match.

    About The Video:
    In order to visually represent this idea director Brandon Black and Director of Photography Zack Schamberg filmed Oddisee walking backwards throughout multiple boroughs in New York over several nights. Then they reversed the footage to make everyone else move backwards. Next the director shot the footage at night but boosted the light to appear as though it was day in order to add to the disorienting affect, making night seem like day, and forward seem like backwards.

    About The Album "The Good Fight"
    Imbued with love, honesty, and selflessness, The Good Fight is virtuosic in its musicality, direct in its language, and infinitely relatable.
    In a landscape overrun with abstract indulgence and shallow trend-chasers, the Prince George’s County, Maryland artist has created a record that reminds you that it’s music before it’s hip-hop.
    For Oddisee, “The Good Fight” is about living fully as a musician without succumbing to the traps of hedonism, avarice, and materialism. It’s music that yields an intangible feeling: the sacral sound of an organ whine, brass horns, or a cymbal crash. It’s a meditation on our capacity to love and the bonds binding us together. It’s our ambition and greed warring with our sense of propriety - a list of paradoxes we all face when living and striving.
    Oddisee’s production simmers in its own orchestral gumbo.
    “The Good Fight” acknowledges the stacked odds, but refuses to submit

    Oddisee should have blown up a long time ago. One of the most slept on artist's in the game.

      @Esthiem 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      GeminiEye1 True, but I respect him more as an artist for not really worrying about it. Staying true to the music, and being okay with not being blown up like that.

    • @nathanieldupler3757
      @nathanieldupler3757 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I just hope the blow up doesn't turn his amazing music into fake music about just doing drugs and fucking hoes. Like most popular rappers these day.

    • @GeminiEye1314
      @GeminiEye1314 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Nathan Dupler You can still blow up without turning into a sell out. Look at Chance The Rapper, Action Bronson, Kendrick Lamar. Hip Hop/Rap is changing. People are tired of hearing that same old bullshit on the radio.

    • @ColfaxBlues
      @ColfaxBlues 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nathan Dupler check out his interviews. He seems like a very humble cat and I don't see fame tainting anything he puts out. He even says he has a hard time working with certain people bc he doesn't smoke or drink and almost everyone in the industry seems to. He also never calls girls bitches... crazy right?

    Hol' up! Did Oddisee just rap in 5/4?! That's what I'm talking about. Push the envelope bro!

    • @Azmatic24
      @Azmatic24 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Word, I didn't realize it until you pointed it out but there was something different about it! How could you tell it was 5/4 though? I tried to count out 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4 and none of them sounded right.

    • @BrandonMeeksMusic
      @BrandonMeeksMusic 9 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The open hi hat and the main bass notes land on beat 1. From that point you can count 5 beats until the next open hi hat and main bass note.

    • @BrandonMeeksMusic

      But there's a measure of 8 right before the hook. Oddisee is insane!

    This is truly a masterpiece! I'm proud to say HipHop will connect even more and more with the flow of Jazz with new time signatures and rhyme patterns. Its actually mad exciting to see someone do a 5/4 beat and rap over it so well. It sounds like modern day Hip Hop!!

    It's good to see Oddisee getting the recognition he deserves. I first heard of him 5 years ago and the first two songs that had me interested in him were "Hip Hop's Cool Again" and "In the Ruff". His music just continues to grow and I like the fact that he continues to excel at what he does.

    Honesty, I was kind of iffy on this track at first. Felt the flow he used didn't really fit, but it quickly grew on me. The way he flowed seemed to fit in perfectly after my third listen, and Oddisee has once again proved why he is my second favorite rapper. Would give him first, but Blu has been in that spot since 2006 lol

      It seemed off at first to you cause your ears are probably just used to hearing people rap at the standard 4/4 time signature. If you ever learn how to play drums you'll discover some pretty interesting and rare grooves at different time signatures

    He is the most underrated and overlooked rapper/producer in hip hop. It frustrates me with all the trash that's around in hip hop at the moment that is so prominent, yet talents like Oddisee don't get recognised enough. Respect man, this new album is so dope!

    Just recently, my ears have been blessed to hear something new, at least to me, and authentic. I must say, I am impressed by his subject matter and content. I went on Google Play and downloaded the new album along with a couple of old ones and mixtapes. All are entitled to their own opinion, but if you've ever been through anything and plan on go somewhere in your own personal life, you know and understand where he is coming from. He's letting you know, 1. you're not alone in your travels, 2. long as YOU believe in your path and goals, its all that matters.

      Facts! Everyone is living their own truth, or are we living according to what truth is. Which is we are cursed cause our forefathers turned from the MOST HIGH's law statutes and commandments Deuteronomy 28:15-68. So that answered your first two questions, our end game is YASHAYA HA MASHAYACH ( OUR SAVIOR THE ANOINTED) Romans 6:20-22, 14:11, 5:18 Exodus 20:3, 34:7. Deuteronomy 7:6-9! My brother Philippians 2:12 is our end game. We are living in Daniels 12:11! I pray FATHER keeps you under HIS hedge of protection! Shalam ahch!
