Howdy! Not sure about the lethargy but likely just growing pains. For the health of our chickens, we add a couple teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to their water. Also be very careful with d.e. It’s composed of crushed marine shells and under a microscope has very sharp edges. As such be careful not to breath the dust. Our bags mention caution that in the usage instructions. Too, are you sure you might not be giving them a bit too much d.e.? We usually just dust it into their bedding, and just a bit in their food tray. Don’t want to sound like a know it all cause I’m certainly not but if you put feed on the ground make sure you sweep it all up at night or you’ll invite some sketchy nocturnal visitors, of all sorts. We’ve learned by a few years of experience now. Oh my, one other thing I just thought of … make sure you have “screened” vents front and back in the peak of your hen house, absolutely necessary ( maybe you already do?), let’s ammonia out and provides fresh air. They have a perch right? And hey, give those poor girls some names, it’s half the fun of it 😄 🇨🇦 Brenda & Yves
@@thisorthat7626 Well, I can say this … thanks to advice from lots of TH-camrs and advice in the comment sections too, we’ve learned sooo much. Works great too when puffing veggies. Brenda
to keep there egg shells hard dont throw away there old eggshells, bake them in the oven and then with a pestle and mortar break them up and give it back to them in there feed, saves buying oyster shells
You are wonderful, I love the way you take care of your chickens, Every time I look at you You remind me of my nephew . And you're doing such a great job, I forgot to mention I Pray for you that everything goes wonderful
They don't like too much sunshine and heat they go in the shade during the day ,they will have off days mine do . I give them hard boiled eggs every other day and raw meat of some sort the other everyday they deplete of protein quickly. They like worms and wild food like wood louse . I also give mine dried meal worms also budgie grit or crushed snail shells to aid digestion . They are lovely chickens and being young they will take time to get going with the laying .
Hi. When chicken are not as lively and active as usual it is due to some internal condition (disease or parasites). Breeders recommend a simple, cheap and natural way to treat them. You need some cloves of garlic, a small onion, half a tomato, some black pepper and the juice of 1 lemon. You have to put all the ingredients in a mixer and then add it into their waterer (plenty of water). Just small quantities so it doesnt get too strong. I hope this can be of help. I love your chickens, btw. Greetings.
Beautiful girls and Pablo is stunning, love em all, I wish I could keep chickens again, but I am past it all and don’t have the room but love the eggs, my son is going to have some soon on his allotment so ….
Chickens are gas goin around. Can’t help but smile watching them with their little movements. Thanks for showing them! Hope that one quieter hen picks back up again soon.
Your chickens are lucky to have you...you are clearly an animal lover! I don't know much about chickens, but maybe she is feeling broody and wanting to sit on her eggs. I assume you're taking them to eat. Or maybe she just needs time to settle into the whole egg-laying business. Your chicken yard looks awesome!
Hi Kyle, I recommended the DE . Try putting it in all the cracks in the wood inside the coop, that’s where red mite hide and come out at night. Love the breed ,one of my favourites.
Your rooster is Awesome!!!! You are a wonderful caretaker of animals and land. Don't know about the hen but she might just be a little freaked out about the egg-laying process. Maybe she could use a little extra protein as suggested.
Oh a few locals around my way throw a handful of mince meat at their chooks every week to keep or get them laying. Ours have laid most of the winter long as we throw them our mice and rats we catch in our traps. They do LOVE animal protein.
Diametaous Earth is a marine shell. Its great to feed to them also for deworming. If you don't want to use straw or barley, which is terrible for mites, theres an alternative, a porous mineral used for cat litter, its absorbant and biodegradable (not the clay sort). I prefer not to have a rooster, unless you want to breed as they can, from constant jumping on them, literally shut them down or find somewhere to hide. Pullets need time to adjust when they first start to lay, hence the small eggs. Also if there is a rooster in the eggs will have a blood tail inside the egg. I personally just never let a rooster have free range amongst laying hens as they are just a pain in the butt. A bit if animal protein helps with egg quality. I mske a mix of commercial mash, porridge oats, wild bird mix, and dry cat food (small pellets obviously) which has a good amount of animal protein. Its not cheap but I have discovered over the years that laying hens will get bind from feeding only grain based food (they are cold in its nature. They need warm foods (for the uterus to stay warm and Qi to develop an egg, which takes a full 24hrs) which is basically any animal based protein. I also give them the odd can of sardines which is essentially the same thing and good for shell hardness too. Don't forget chickens are direct relatives of vultures, which makes them omnivores. Just one other thing, fresh ground and green veg matter is essential. Sorry for the long comment.
Your birdies look very pretty dressed in their Sunday best, and your rooster obviously thinks he is king of the castle. I don't know anything about chickens but I hope all goes well for your new layer.
What a handsome Rooster and he knows it. I'd say your neighbours welcome back that wonderful sound. Hopefully it won't be long before one of the girls becomes broody and you are surrounded by ball's of fluff 🐣🐤🐥 ☘️🌀☘️
Sounds like you have checked for the common issues. Maybe check for parasites in their poop. If they are eating the DE that may indicate they have worms. ACV in the water helps, maybe put some DE in a small bowl for them to eat. Keep an eye on the hens and you will see if she is getting better or not. Pablo is a handsome, and tame, rooster. Nice to see the coop being used after all the work you put into it. Enjoy fresh eggs.
With the lethargic chook, I don’t think it’s necessarily something to worry about, however give her some chicken vitamins twice a day and keep her somewhere quiet to ease your mind.
Chickens do look in good condition. Is it possible brooder has any pests, inside or out? Do chickens get giaridia? If they love the D. E. Is it possible they need grit/small stones from the ground and that is the reason for eating so much D. E.?
They look lovely espiacislly the rooster. Love the space they've got to free range. I would consider clipping their wings. I've had girls fly onto a 5ft fence before .
Has she been laying for a while or just started? I’ve had a few rounds of chickens and a few times had a chicken sit like she was in pain and then eventually laid an egg with no shell. I think sometimes it takes a short time for them to work out some of their internal “plumbing” issues as they start to lay. It’s good to keep an eye on her but it will most likely resolve itself over time. My chickens who went through that looked very sick for several hours until they laid their egg without a shell or with the shell soft and unformed afterward.
Good stuff, Kyle. They would be pooping a lot where the feed is left down. Would moving them around help with increasing grass growth, diversity in their diet and also with a bit of weeding?
Diatomasious earth even though food grade can be damaging to their lungs and yours. Best to make it into a paste and put into their pen to eat if they wish. Im no chook expert but it can be pretty dangerous as its so fine a powder. They look very pretty. I have a bunch of mungrels that we've rescued from other people.
Spinach is high in oxalates and impairs nutrient absorption binding with calcium and iron. Spinach doesn't contain a fraction of the nutritional density and bioavailability that eggs have.

We use wood ash instead of DE, no cost to buy. Works well.
Try a little apple cider vinegar with their water. Usually works with my chickens.

She could be going broody, when hens start going in a trance could be a sign she wants to start hatching eggs
Broody hens can start trying to run off if there eggs are being taken away, watch out for that
