“Meta has the best engineers. We don’t need project management. We’re so good, and smart.” “Meta engineers are shortsighted, work on things that don’t have lasting impact, and write terrible code.” This entire conversation made me realize that Meta is as equally dysfunctional as every other company.
Yeah this want poked out for me to, these 2 thoughts within few breaths apart. I always tell people within these top tier "same $hit different flavor."
Being a part of startups and big tech in the past, I can say that Meta engineering/AI culture is very cutthroat to the point where folks tear down one another and throw people under the bus for their own personal benefit/gain. This was true when I was there around 2022 when the massive layoffs occurred. I’ve seen even competent/well-rounded engineers axed for the opportunity to distribute money elsewhere I.e “GenAI” engineers. It’s awful
So Meta has the best of the best engineers, but also has “lowest code quality”. Shouldn’t the best engineers produce the best code? Or is best engineer really a measure of fastest engineer? Interesting things to think about. Great to hear about life inside of Meta.
Classic case of the tyranny of metrics. Smart people will always game and exploit any system of performance measurement if there is advantage in it for them.
I honestly don't think the engineers at any of these companies are anything special. It's just who is willing to tolerate the interview process, work culture, and corporate culture for what amount of money. That's not always top level people even though a percentage will be. It's entirely possible that the small percentage that are generate enough more than enough value to make up for things though.
I was an intern in Reality Labs in Summer 22, I bought 4 portal tvs for relatives(sent it to them) and use a Portal myself. Portals would have made a killing if they were sold in WhatsApp heavy markets. But USA is too Apple centric for that to happen

I find too many of these scrum processes, Kanban board management unnecessary. Having more project managers than the developers shows the companies inability. The board should just be a card of work to pick up and nothing more than that. If a developer cannot own and deliver their work maybe it’s time to find another job.
It bothers me when engineers speak in a language other than English (not just Chinese). This is not only exclusionary for other employees, but it holds those people back well: www.jointaro.com/lesson/6WYNgaTJ9TAv46Tm60zU/english-communication-is-the-most-important-skill-for-immigrant-engineers/
Man, these thumbnails are getting more and more ridiculous. There is no reason for your mouth to be that wide open over such a trivial topic. Great video though
TH-cam has a new feature to test the performance across 3 different thumbnails. The goal of any experiment is to be able to learn -- you need to try options which could surprise you.
@@RahulPandeyrkp No i completely understand. I just see too many thumbnails with people with that surprised/shocked look, prompting the viewer to quickly click and find out what the heck is going on -- only to find out that it's just an interview with an engineer. I just find TH-cam's approach to getting creators to be creative a bit deceptive. It's making people do absurd shit
Mera is underwhelming at best. Imagine having that much money and brain power and just work on useless products or trying to increase screen time and …. I admit that they’ve done some cool stuff in open source and LLMs but still vastly underwhelming when you look at their resources

Thank you for the content, as an early career swe these videos are especially helpful hearing the thoughts and opinions of more senior devs :)
Amazon next please!
No short of horror stories there most likely
check teamblind
I would love a video like this for Apple, cuz there is virtually no Apple SWE content on youtube
yes! I definitely have Apple on my list. It'll be valuable since they're so secretive.
I agree
There barrait no Apple content on TH-cam

I have a portal, and I bought one for my parents too. You did a good job with it.

Great video!!
Side note: I love my portal lol. Use it to video call parents and grandparents all the time.
That's cool! Portal did have magical moments for me as well, but it just didn't have the scale for it to be worthwhile for Meta :/
What software do you use to design your thumbnails? They are awesome!
As earlier engineer , this content s so valuable
Hey rahul, is this this series only limited to FAANGs can we see something like this for JP Morgan or other companies like that?
I want to do cmopanies like JP Morgan as well!

Can you do a video on taking breaks and handling gaps as an engineer or product designer while getting hired by FAANG companies?
Where can I get a Dead Code Society t-shirt?
you have to delete 1K+ lines of code at Meta and then post in a certain group on Workplace
Please do for Microsoft also!
Do it for Google next

If you're already employed, do the job that is (1) the most urgent need for the company and (2) has people you can best learn from

You should be fluent in Chinese to succeed now at Meta, else forget to feel like you are a part of team.
