This is how I envisioned Pamela who was very much mentioned from the beginning of the show. Shirley as Pamela was sophisticated, classy, subtle. I loved her English accent that matched a with the character of Jeffrey. Saw her as the mother of Mason and Jeffrey. But then she was recast by Marj Dusay I never cared for her character. Marj Dusay’s character was crazy and over the top.
Perhaps, it translated very poorly onto the screen, and it was obvious from the beginning that nothing was working. Her scenes unintentionally came off as gothic and creepy due to her being so dull and listless. It was reported she had trouble with the heavy amount of dialogue, and it was obvious in the scenes as she seemed to have trouble keeping up with the other actors. One particular scene with Judith McConnel, comes to mind, where McC was forced to overact to charge up the scene because SAF just stood there so emotionless and one-note. I was surprised she lasted as long as she did, given how quick SB was to recast or even drop the character altogether when the actor wasn't working out as envisioned.
I preferred Marj tbh. Isn't the casting of Pamela one of the reasons that the Dobsons were locked out of the studio eventually by the tv company or the network, NBC?
@@CC-uc4gq That was painfully obvious as she seemed to only have a fraction of dialogue as her co-stars; she looked miserable and had to know she was doomed to be axed.
@@CC-uc4gq I did too, I think we all did. MD was the only acting stand out on the by-the-numbers Capitol in the female JR Ewing role, and became to SB what Elizabeth Hubbard was to As The World Turns. That's why it was such a surprise when MD was axed out of nowhere only 6 months later!

Why did Shirley leave Santa Barbara in the first place? I thought she was a better Pamela than Marj Dusay.

I think the Dobsons were kicked out because they wanted to fire the head writer Ann Howard Bailey.@@CC-uc4gq
Yes, pity, just as SB was taking off too. I read that SAF couldn't cope with the pressure of daytime soap@@hirsch4real201
