  • So, lets start with the bad news. I won't be making a fishing video this week. I am in the middle of a move, and just cannot take the time to go fishing. We have lots of stuff to do this week, and possibly next week. I just won't be able to go this week for sure, and possibly not next week.
    Now for the good news, my wife and I are having another kid. Yes, thats right, she is pregnant! We don't know the sex yet, however it doesn't matter to us as long as the baby is healthy... Either way, another kid is on the way, and we are told so far that it is healthy. So great news!
    Ok now for the new reel unboxing! I bought the Maverick reel from Qualifly Products. I loved that reel when I fished it, and decided to get it. So stay tuned to watch this reel in action soon! As soon as I can get out on the river, I will be going with this reel.
    Get the reel here... www.qualiflypro...

    Congrats on kid number 2! Gear reviews are always appreciated, especially with how many small names are popping up. Sometimes if you put a lot less backing on a reel you can get line to fit. Another full machined reel under $150 is the Allen trout II, good drag, good sound, comes in a few colors. Good luck with the move!

      Yeah, I have seen Allen reels before as well, they seem good. I personally haven't ever fished with one though, so I cannot contest to how good of quality they are, but I hear good things. Thanks! :)

      It is pretty here for sure, thank you! I am very lucky to be able to live here. As for the Maverick, I think you will be very happy with it. Its a great reel for the money. There are better reels out there for sure! However for the money, this blows away some other name brand reels in the $250+ range.

    Congratulations on the move and the addition to the family. No vid for a while is OK, no worries BUT, I assume there's fish able water between Farmington and Durango. I expect during those back and forth trips you're going to wet a line. I like the gear videos as well as tying and on the water stuff. Good luck with the Maverick reels.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldnt have time to wet a line going back and fourth. HAHA I went down today at 6am, and got back around 7pm to the house here. Just crazy busy. Lots of packing, cleaning, and painting the old place so we get our deposit back.

      Once I get settled, there are some amazing rivers and creeks up this way. I plan on hitting up the Dolores soon. That will be nice. I think Carter wants to come with me. Hopefully next tuesday I can go, then have a video up next Thursday.

    Just ordered one then I see where you are going to use piscfun...

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both are great reels, I still use my maverick, never got rid of any of them if that tells ya something... just piscifun makes less expensive reel, and I’m kinda poor honestly! Haha

  • @andrewmorke
    @andrewmorke 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I will never own another cast aluminum fly reel or reel without a multi disk drag ever again. Since buying a CNC cut sealed carbon drag Piscifun Crest, there's no going back. And even the cheapo Chinese CNC reels are not bad these days. I've donated my Ross die cast Fly Start reels to a community fishing program, and replaced them with Piscifun and Aventik reels. The Ross was OK 10 years ago but they're obsolete now.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad you like the reels man, yeah they aren’t bad for the money huh? I mean there are better reels out there but not really for the price. If you wanna go American, there is a company that is slightly more expensive than piscifun but not much more. They are great quality reels for a reasonable price. It’s called risen. Go to www.risenfly.com and type in McFly at checkout for a discount. You can get their gideon reel for a great price! And it’s one of the best machine jobs I’ve seen In a while for a reel under $300, best part is it’s half that cost!

  • @divineavengers
    @divineavengers 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    nice reels for sure but how much is the 10 foot rod going to cost?

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think its going to be right around $200, which isn't bad for a custom made rod. I have a few special things though on it, like he is burning my logo into the cork and stuff. Little extra's that cost a bit more. But he is very reasonable...

  • @undenyabledlema
    @undenyabledlema 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Between the Maverick, Piscifun sword, and the risen Gideon what do you think is the best bet? I’m leaning Maverick for the mid price and sealed drag, but with your code the Gideon isn’t much more and comes in green.. thanks!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The LW from risen is sealed, and with the discount it will still cost less. It’s a great reel! I’d say that’s my top pick. The maverick is good though, piscifun has lost me, their customer service and quality control recently has not been desirable.

      @@McFlyAngler thanks for the info, I went cheap this time but when I upgrade I’m really going to look at that Risen. Seems awesome. Also, if you haven’t checked them out yet Danielsson reels out of sweden are insane for the price

      @@McFlyAngler I paid about 300 even for their L5W series ordered on Friday it was at my house by Monday. The L5w is like their mid/high end, the f3w and original series are even more affordable. Oh and they’re all salt safe. It’s my favorite reel I’ve ever used, smooth and precise as it gets!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I mean still $300 is pricy…. Risens saltwater high end reel is about that price. It’s awesome! The whale reel. However also I know some other brands like redington make some pretty nice reels in the $300 range also. But I’ll check it out for sure. What makes it nicer than others?

      +Tyler Ross no issues at all. Just for the price point I think the Maverick is far and away better. But the 2200 is a good reel... it will start looking warn though in just a few months, since it's cast aluminum with a paint job, rather than machined and anodized...

    like a review on flies you tie and see if they catch fish.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do that already... Check out all my fishing show video's. 95% of the flies I fish with are ones I tie on video. And when I catch a fish, I usually try to show (or just say) the fly that I catch it on. Also, almost all of my flies I tie on video I have caught fish on as well.

  • @charliesmithflips2605
    @charliesmithflips2605 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    More scratches more stories is what I say! I don't see why you need a fully machined reel. These days the cast and machined are basically the exact same. Great video though!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I disagree. Machines reels are lighter and tougher. They will not break as easy. Just FYI. However I have no problem with cast either. Just there is a difference for sure. And yeah I personally don’t care about scratched reels, but some people do. Lol

      Yeah, they are at my fly shop. Good reels. I am not super stoked on the looks of the reels though. Im sure they fish really well, but not my favorite for looks. The thing is, they are not fully machined, just cast aluminum. For just $25 or so more you get a fully machined reel with this Maverick.. Personally I haven't found a better reel in the under $150 range.

      Thanks for the subscription! :) As for the address, I'm not sure. But I can give you their website which should have phone numbers and what not to contact the business owner (his name is Joe). www.qualiflyproducts.com
      Sorry I don't know anything about special prices, I am not associated with them as a company and don't know anything about discounts or how much it would cost to ship. You would have to ask Joe. Sorry, I wish there was more I could answer to you, but I cannot. I just own the reel, I don't know anything about the inner workings of the company.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s good man, not a bad reel for the money. Been fishing more with even cheaper reels lately, Piscifun’s, so I only honestly put about 8-10 months on this reel, worked well

    • @Firemedic361
      @Firemedic361 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, I have a Piscifun baitcaster and spinning reel and they are performing awesomely. I will definitely add a Piscifun fly reel to the kit also, but I do like to support small businesses as well. Thanks again and love the videos they have really improved my fly tying!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad to help, yeah from what I’ve found, most modern reels work very well. Some might have better customer service or better quality control, but for the most part they are all quality. And the maverick is no exception. Good reels for sure!

  • @Halliday55
    @Halliday55 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Kelly Gallup said that there are no modern fly reels made today that are bad. Do you get more quality with an Abel, or Mirage, or Hatch, or whatever? Sure you do. Can you buy a new mid/lower cost large arbor reel made (wherever) and have a reel that will perform well for however long? You betcha. As long as the guys at Maverick stand up to their warrantee claims then you should be all set. BTW, when you are older and settled you will look back on the time spent living out of boxes, with a baby, and laugh your ass off about it.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't own an abel, mirage, or hatch so I cannot contest to the quality vs. But I will say that this reel is better quality than my sage 2200 (same price point), and the same quality as my sage 3200 (almost double the price)... Plus I like the looks better than my 3200. I could never afford an abel, hatch or mirage, so I'm very happy and content with my new Maverick. For the money I think its awesome! Heck, I like it better than my 3200 at almost double the price. So I'm stoked.
      Yeah, I am sure I will laugh, I am now. I hope I didnt sound like I was complaining about the move. I am happy to move to such a beautiful area. My wife and I have been working to move to Durango for 6 years, and finally were able to. I was only trying to explain why there is no fishing video this week, thats all. Sorry if it seemed like I was complaining.

    • @Halliday55
      @Halliday55 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didnt think you were complaining at all. I thought it was funny and nice to see a young guy on the move with a family making it, and still having time to fish. Being older it is nice to see the young guys trying hard, working, wife, family, getting it done. Good job all around McFly.

    Hey man you should check out Piscifun, I love their reels and it's machined aluminum and the best part is, it's only 50-60 bucks. Really cheap and awesome reel for the price point

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Is it really fully machined? If so, seems like some good deals. How is the drag? Like is it smooth? I know what the costs are to machine these reels, and if they have quality drag and fully machined then they are loosing money selling them for $60... LOL

    • @kiereynolds1175
      @kiereynolds1175 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep! Fully machined aluminum alloy, drag is great! I live in Texas and catch bass and perch most of the time so I really don't use the drag much, but I have caught some bigger bass, 6-7 pounds, and the drag is honestly silky smooth. Since they're so cheap you should just give em a try! You can get them on amazon, I really like the piscifun blaze, I got one right now and I love it!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow, well it must be made overseas (which is totally fine) because it costs a lot to make these here. Machining aluminum is not cheap. HAHA But yeah, I will check them out for sure, thanks!

    • @kiereynolds1175
      @kiereynolds1175 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I think they're made in Japan, but they're really great products for the price, and yes! No problem!

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Japan? No way, its expensive to machine there also. I would guess china or taiwan.... Either way it doesn't matter if its done right... I know Sage machines overseas, and those are quality reels as well. Of course, overpriced, but quality. HAHA

  • @222buckley
    @222buckley 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hmm so say a fish is peeling line off your reel is spinning seems like it would be hard to get your fingers in to adjust the drag without risk of them hitting the reel.

    • @McFlyAngler
      @McFlyAngler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +222buckley well you should never adjust your drag while fighting the fish. Although we are all guilty of it. Also, it's an open face, so you could use your hand to slow that run.
