  • How to install your mulch kit which consists of 2 blades and a plug for the side discharge chute. This kit was $89 at Home Depot.
    Tools needed are 24mm socket, ratchet, torque wrench, vise grip, and possible breaker bar.

    I used your method to install the mulch kit on my XT1 LT42. Like you, I put the mower on Rhino ramps and worked from underneath without removing the deck. Worked great. Thank you for posting your video.

    Thank you you saved so much extra work, all the other people's videos were telling us to drop the deck. It was so much easier. I had to spend $40. At Wal-Mart for them car ramps but it was so worth it. Thanks again for this video! Keep making these.

    Thank you for taking time to make this video. I found it to be very thorough and instructive. Cub Cadet should link to this. [I watched the bagger installation video first and it saved me time from installing the mulching kit. Never-the-less this video was useful when I need to replace and/or remove the blades.]

      Yeah I should of just went to the straight bagger system. The mulch blades do work but the plug is where the setup goes bad. You pretty much get covered in clippings every time brother. I’m glad the video helped you in your decision. Thanks for the awesome feedback my friend.

    I've got the older ltx1040 cub cadet,but essentially the same. I damaged a spindle and blade and need to replace them. I figured I'd get the mulching kit and try it next spring. Looks easy enough to install, thanks for the great video friend.

      If you damaged the spindle you need to have it replaced as well as the blades brother. The blades won’t be level with a bent spindle and can damage the new blades if it hits the deck and or grass, depending on the severity of it.       @@MrV2u yeah,I'm gettin the deck rebuild kit for just over $100 and the extreme mulch kit for $84. The mowers 10 years old,so I figured it's time to take care of all of it while its apart. The star pattern is stripped off the one shaft and the blade itself. I was unsure of the mulch kit,but I think itll work for what I need. Thanks a bunch brother.😎👍

    I use a battery operated Ryobi P261 impact wrench to remove the bolt on the blade. You can hold onto the blade with a gloved hand and it doesn't turn at all. Never had a problem doing it that way.

      If I lifted it more off the ground I would of hit it with my impact. Next time I’d go that route as well brother. Thanks for the tip.

      @@MrV2u Got it done. My vise grip was to small to block the blade. Had to use a double open end wrench to block the blade. One end on the blade and the other on the open part of the deck. On the other side, one end on the blade and the other end on the vise grip gripped to the bottom of the deck. Thanks!

    Thank you for the well done video. I plan to buy a Cub Cadet soon. When I install the chute plug can I remove the chute? If I remove that chute it will save room in my shed.

      I wouldn’t take the chute off. The mulch kit kicks around massive amounts of grass all over you and the tractor. More so than the regular side discharge. I have the same issue with it taking up space. Overall I’m still happy with it just expect to get grass all over yourself.

      @@MrV2u Thank you for that info, in that case I will leave it. I use the tractor all the way into December cutting up the leaves. It used to be the trees would have dropped the leaves by November, with the warmer weather they don't want to let go! It really stinks if we get an early snow with leaves still on the trees.

      Robert Reeg in that case it would be better to stay with the regular blades and get a backpack for it. The stock blades are high lift which would suck the leaves up better and put them into the backpack more efficiently. Let me know your thoughts.

      I used to do that till I moved into another house with more trees. Then it didn’t work for me and I ended up blowing them all into the woods. Let me know how you make out with that tractor. Good speaking with you brother.

    I just went and bought a porter cable battery impact driver. gonna try this today with the impact gun see if it’s strong enough to break the bolt loose and tighten it. Then torque it

    There is a retaining rod provided with the cover that should be screwed with the plastic nut, otherwise the cover will open very quickly with the clippings pushing out. And according to the instruction leaflet, you should remove the chute, it is useless anyway with the kit, it did remove mine and nothin is blowing out.

    Thank you for this easy-to-follow tutorial. Question: Do you know why you are to leave the grass chute in place? I love to mulch and I was hoping to make the mower narrower by taking off the chute. Have you used yours with the chute off?

      I never took the chute off on this unit with the mulch kit. I did take it off my older John Deere with no issues. I can’t see any harm in taking it off. Let me know how you make out brother.

      Great video. I want to easily remove the Chute Flap and be able to re-install easily. Question is how do I remove the Chute Flap? Unbolt from deck (I see one bolt there) or hammer / tap the long rod out where it is hinged?

      I recommend leaving it in place because you will be covered in clippings with the plug in place and with the chute on, I can imagine with the chute off how much worse it will be. But if you want unbolt it from the deck. Do not try to take out the pin from the spring or you won’t be able to get it back in place. Let me know how you make out.

      For leaves I leave the mulching blade and use my bagger. The mulch kit will be overrun with a lot of leaves. It’s not beneficial to the lawn to mulch a lot of leaves unless you Lyme your yard once or twice a year and dethatch. I have a video on installing the bagger system on my channel as well.       It depends on where you brought it from. It wouldn’t hurt to give it a couple pumps of grease to be sure. Enjoy your new machine my friend.

    Mine are idiot tight. I am going to have to use my impact. 24 inch breaker bar wont losen them

      Mine were tight as well. Get that longer breaker bar or hit it with the gun brother. Just make sure you torque it back to specs. Let me know how you make out.

    Great video and instruction!! I bought a mulching kit for my Cub, but it came with what they call a "Mulch Plug Wire". I've followed the instructions, but don't see any use for the wire whatsoever. I imagine it's supposed to hold the plug tight against the deck. One end attaches to the spud that the wing nut goes on, and the other end slips and rides in the groove of the deck lip. Are you familiar with this and do you have any input? Thanks for the great job!

      I’ve never seen it in person but I have heard of the tension wire. It does exactly as you describe. Still not sure it will do much, being that the plug lets a lot of grass come through it as is. My best purchase was the bagger my friend. Glad I could help you out with the video.       @@MrV2u After messing with it again for a little bit ( I wasn't going to waste much time), I ditched it the tension wire. The cable tie I used works infinitely better.

      I know I’m a little late. But I’m having trouble getting my mulch plug to stay down at all. Any idea on a link where I can buy this wire y’all are talking about without buying a new mulch kit? I haven’t had any luck on cub cadet site.

      @@aaron9157 mine didn’t come with the wire either, I think they made a newer model that comes with the wire maybe. Is it installed correctly and grass is blowing out the side? Mine still allows a lot of grass to blow out and get jammed up in and around the plug. That’s why I said it’s of poor design brother. Let me know how you make out my friend.

      @@MrV2u yeah, mine lets a lot out too. I was able to get a small bolt through that little hole in the bottom of the deck below the chute opening. It’s sticking straight up and I was able to get it tightened down to help.
      Worked “better” yesterday. But we need something that is a little more durable for sure!
      I guess I’ll make do until it breaks the tiny bolt or something better comes along. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      @@MrV2u We watched your video when we bought the bagger for that tractor. It became too cumbersome to empty the bag every five minutes. So we went and bought the mulching kit. We did end up doing it how you did it the exact same way with the vice grips. We tried the impact drill but couldn’t reach underneath there far enough even with the deck all the way up the highest setting. Our grass was probably about 7 inches high in some parts because it’s been raining a lot. My son cut the grass last night and it only took one pass and mulched everything up very fine. Very impressed with the mulching kit. So sorry I paid $450 for the bagging system now I got to try to sell it to somebody else.

      @@zmaninpgh you will have to cut the grass more often. I’m in New York and cut the grass every 6 days. With all the rain we been having I get exactly 1 and 3/4 bags filled up on a .75 yard. I cut the grass in the highest setting as well during extreme heat. When it’s fall it picks up leaves like no ones business. Every so often I’ll throw on the mulch plug and mulch. It just depends on what works for you. I would recommend trying the bagger a little longer and cutting more often.

    Can I install the mulch plug but not the blades, and just use the regular blades to cut up the leaves?

      You can but it won’t cut up the leaves and grass as finely as the mulch blades.

    So almost a year later, how is this kit treating you? The reviews on this kit are pretty awful - the plug seals poorly and the basic (black) mulching blades are mediocre. I'm considering spending a bit more money on the newer 'extreme" kit with supposedly improved (yellow) blades.

      Yeah the plug is horrendous, grass blows out the corners. By the time your done cutting your covered in clippings. The blade does its job no problem. Clean cuts on the grass blades. I did switch over to a bagging setup for this reason. Let me know how you like the extreme setup brother.

      Advanced Auto brother. I use them on my Ram 1500. I think they were like $70.

    Cub puts out a lot of bad products, but this mulch kit is the absolute worst. it won't last one season

      The blades are ok. The plug allows grass to come out the corners. I switched over to a bagging system. I wouldn’t recommend the mulch kit to anyone.

      @@MrV2u the grass chute. The thing that’s covering the mulching plug, that flips up and down, that the grass spits out of when the mulch kit is not installed.

      The blades are good, the plug is horrible. It lets a lot of grass clippings blow out the sides and all over you.
