    I just purchased one of these with the 180 upgrade and can't wait to go pick it up. Flying this back cross country I'll post you with my trip details.

    I flew a Cessna 172XP in the late 70's or very early 80's, nice performing aircraft, close to a 182... major boost to a SkyHawk...

      Didn't the 172XP have a Continental fuel injected 195hp engine?

  • @kiwidiesel

    That 180hp kit makes the 172 a super fun plane. Gives it the spice it needs at MAUW on back country airstrips.

    As a newbie, i was wanting to see the throttle control and also the yoke control & surfaces it moves. But thanks for sharing this cool 180hp conversion video! I always say more power is safer and would make me more comfortable climbing at 1000ft /min than the 600 ft./min of the Cessna150. I also luv the upgrade avionics, that is comforting too.

      You are welcome, glad you enjoyed the video. Increased climb performance is definitely a nice safety factor.

    Very nice plane with the 180 hp conversion. Great for high density altiude airports. Not as fast or as much load as a 182 but cheaper operating expenses.

    The 152 I trained in had a 200hp conversion engine. Not Really, Lol. Great channel despite the fact that I'm not in the market to purchase an aircraft.

    Not bad for an airframe originally certified in the 1950's with the 145 H.P. Continental O-300 engine and a gross weight of 2200 lbs.

    • @aerolife1646
      @aerolife1646  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 172 is definitely an airframe that has stood the test of time with just some modifications over the years.

    Can we put the Lycoming 390 in there? The 215 horsepower version? And then put that performance exhaust system on there that would give us an extra 10 15 horsepower

    • @aerolife1646
      @aerolife1646  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cessna 172 aircraft have very little performance increase upgrading from 180hp to 200 because of the parasitic drag and the heavier weight of the bigger engine. Cessna made a 172 with 210hp engine - it’s called a Hawk XP. It can climb better but the cruise speed is the same as this one. The payload increase was only 100lbs where this one was 200lbs. So I think the sweet spot for a 172 is 180hp. That’s probably the reason all newer Cessna 172 come with 180hp from the factory. Hope this helps

    Excellent airplane. Please tell us what the Vx and Vy are with the 180 HP. I’m watching the video now and was rather impressed with 1000 FPM at 100 (knots? Mph?)... implies one hell of an obstacle-clearing Vx...Peace...

    • @aerolife1646
      @aerolife1646  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I do not believe the Vx and Vy changed with the upgrade. Best rate of climb (Vy) is 68 mph. The speed was 100mph in the video. If you fly the best rate of climb, you will have a higher pitch attitude and your climb would be even more than 1000fpm. You're right, it has an impressive obstacle clearance capability.

    • @twopheew9995

    • @captainvector
      @captainvector 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      According to the Information manual for the 172Q, which is the Cessna-built 180 HP version of the fixed gear 172, Vy at sea level is 73 KIAS, and Vx at sea level is 62 KIAS.

      Good observation - here's what happened. The first approach (inside view) was a no flap landing. The second approach and landing (outside view) showed a landing with flaps, as mentioned in the text of the video - normal landing uses flaps. (We had to do a second landing due to the outside camera footage being unusable from the first landing.)
